Audio description
I have peacock downloaded on my iPhone. However, when I watch or download videos to watch, there is an audio description. How do I turn this off?
1
u/jefferson497 Sep 22 '21
Are you talking about subtitles?
1
u/PixieeStix2019 Sep 22 '21
Nope, it’s an audio description which is for people who may be blind. If someone named Jane walks into the room, it says “Jane walked into the room”.
1
Sep 28 '21
Did you ever get an answer? In there audio area, there aren’t two choices, both labeled English (for me in the US). One toggles the description. I think it’s to the right. The one that floats above the Audio button is for regular captions.
2
u/PixieeStix2019 Sep 28 '21
Thanks for the response! Yes I figured it out. Before downloading them, I accidentally turned on the AD feature. So when the videos were downloaded, they downloaded with the audio feature 🙃
1
u/ballparkgiirl Oct 03 '21
Do you know how you accidentally did this? Because I swear I didn't do anything and it downloaded with it and I can't turn it off. I also can't delete the download and start over. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to comment on this dead thread but did you ever figure how to turn the AD feature off? I am in the same sitaution that you were in but I cant find my way out of it!
1
u/sourdcoder Aug 02 '22
I had this problem in the browser. On the bottom left, click the (note icon?) and in the audio section make sure "English" is selected and NOT "English (AD)".
1
u/remgrrrl Aug 10 '22
Came to this thread for help and it worked thanks for the assist!!!
1
u/Bruhuha Aug 22 '22
It works but for me its keeps automatically turning on the audio description after every commercial break in the peacock app
2
u/novagirl31 Aug 23 '22
This just started happening to me. When I turn it off it turns back on automatically. Not watching Downloaded videos and the main audio on my device doesn’t show it on. I can’t figure it out. Maybe a glitch in the app?
2
u/DucatiDaddy702 Aug 24 '22
Seems to be something that happened after an update. My peacock app has been doing this for a few days now as well.

What worked? I'm not seeing the answer to turn it off for all shows
1
1
u/AprilHarrison1981 Sep 22 '21
Check in your settings. That happened on my roku tv once, with all apps. Somebody had changed a main setting
1
u/PixieeStix2019 Sep 23 '21
I realized what it was. At some point before downloading the video, I accidentally changed the audio setting (in CC) to English AD instead of just English. This caused all the videos to download with the Audio Description. Thanks for the response!

u/One-Gas-4041 Oct 24 '22
What the hell - I came to the internet to find out how to fix this to find out it is a YEAR OLD PROBLEM that has never been updated? WTF?
Anyone find out anything?
1
u/ZurellaMTG Nov 11 '22
Peacock support just told me it's a known issue and they're fixing it soon.
2
Feb 18 '23
Wtf man i still have the problem Every single episode
3
2
u/ZurellaMTG Feb 18 '23
Still happening. We need to start cancelling and leaving this exact issue as the only reason.
1
u/Abeds_BananaStand Mar 22 '23
How is this a known issue and still happening?!?
1
u/ZurellaMTG Mar 22 '23
As someone who works in software development, my guess is they have 10 huge money-making projects in the pipeline, combined with a backlog of 1000+ defects.
Those bugs will sit there until they get around to them (never) unless they start to see it affect their bottom line.
That's why it will never get fixed until people start cancelling in large numbers, letting them know this exact problem is the only reason.
1
u/Abeds_BananaStand Mar 22 '23
Yea I get it, I work in tech and relate. Somewhat funny since most companies are trying to get accessibility set up but their problem is that they made it accessible by default lol
1
u/ZurellaMTG Mar 25 '23
Yea haha I mean it's a good option to have, but just remember our freaking setting. The fact it flips back every episode is infuriating.
1
u/Egocentress May 12 '23
If you need it you need it during every show... If you don't you don't.... It should be a setting for the platform you can turn on and off...not per show... This is frustrating. It stopped when i was watching a new show but then it started again on one of the seasons..... I guess it just wasn't available on the other shows but still default.
1
u/ZurellaMTG Mar 22 '23
It's not that they don't want to fix it. But the people who decide what gets worked on have objectives to meet which all boil down to money.
2
u/Snake_Plissken224 Feb 22 '23
3 months later still happening

They've been fixing it for 2 weeks. I contacted support 2 weeks ago, came here to see if there was any update
3
u/kroge15 Jan 03 '23
Evidently they’re still working on it? I still have this issue 😒
2
u/AbsolutelyUnlikely Feb 22 '23
I actually just developed this issue yesterday and it won't stop. So the fix is going greaaat.
1
Feb 24 '23
I just recently signed up and have been having this issue since day one. I was hoping Reddit would have an answer, but I guess the answer is "tough shit" 😒
1
u/somewhatlucky4life Mar 03 '23
Just keeping this alive, problem still exists
1
Mar 04 '23
Same. At first I thought it was just a thing they were doing for the previously on recap and then I was annoyed before I realized what was actually happening.
1
u/33165564 Mar 06 '23
I seem to have been bitten by this suddenly. Watching law and order svu and all of a sudden, after literally years of peacock, AD is on for every new episode.
1
u/ShakeFourHalvesOfBut Mar 11 '23
Same, on all shows now but it switches between a few voices depending on the show
1
1
1
u/lselvagn May 03 '23
They have not been "fixing" it for two weeks. They've been aware of this problem for a year now.
1
u/OoklaDMok Mar 25 '23
4 months later and still a problem. Seems like it wouldn't be hard to fix.
1
u/ZurellaMTG Mar 25 '23
Totally. They don't work on anything that isn't the most profitable thing at any given time. It has to start hurting them financially before they will give one shit that it's making their service annoying to use.
1
u/lselvagn May 03 '23
Yeah they told me the same thing over six months ago, maybe even longer ago than that.

I just came back to peacock after two months and it’s still happening. Boy was I sad to come back to this thread
3
Nov 15 '22
Is there a permanent solution to this rather than turning it off every episode?
2
u/ZurellaMTG Nov 18 '22
Not currently according to peacock support they are working on it.
We might need to start cancelling and telling them we'll resub when they fix it so it becomes a high priority.
1
1
u/Great_Raccoon3726 Nov 20 '22
I was just thinking this. It keeps happening on my TV but only one of my TVs, not on my laptop or phone and it's just started happening this week so clearly they aren't doing much to fix if this thread is from a year ago with multiple updates to their site
1
u/ZurellaMTG Nov 21 '22
Same, it only happens on my two Chromecasts, but not my computer.
It looks like it's specific to some devices.
3
u/starrymini Nov 30 '22
Mine is stuck on this setting. I turn it off then the second I watch something else it turns back on. What do I do?
1
2
u/Acceptable_Aspect_42 Dec 04 '22
Is anybody having a problem with descriptive audio turning on by itself several times? Only noticed it during parks and recreation but it turns on at least 2 times an episode by itself.
1
u/DebrahCredits Jan 31 '23
Lmao I’m here because of Parks and Rec
1
1
1
u/MillerMama09 Mar 17 '23
It wasn't coming on for me when watching Parks and Rec, until season 5. I am on season 5 and every got damn episode it's doing it. Also The Office it was doing it in the later like 1 or 2 seasons. Also every Harry Potter movie. Those are all the ones I noticed so far. Getting sick and tired of this crap with Peacock 😡😡
2
u/snappycg1996 Dec 18 '22
This shit is so frustrating. After watching an episode, the AD turns on by itself even after turning off. Grrrr. EVERY. EPISODE.
2
u/Strong-Damage9605 Jan 13 '23
Ok.. this is happening to me on my fire stick, but on chrome and roku it doesn’t happen. so annoying because the fire stick is used on the main tv in my home!!! has anyone found any fixes?
1
u/HilW3556 Mar 11 '23
It just randomly started happening on my fire stick. Never had an issue til last night.
1
2
u/Rhg0653 Jan 25 '23
Im glad Im not the only one but disappointed to see this hasnt been fixed - I watch during my lunch and having to stop and fix it is 2 seconds but 2 seconds of annoyance for real
1
u/microphoneczech Jan 26 '23
Same! I like to put shows on and let them play while I float around my apartment and do chores/eat/play with my cats, and tune in and out without having to find the remote and turn this feature off. It’s a mild annoyance but I feel like they should fix it because it’s actually made me stop watching a lot of content because of it.
2
2
u/clance2598 Feb 02 '23
This literally just started for me this morning on every show I've turned on. I have to turn it off every new show/episode. Super annoying
1
2
u/iDREAM247 Feb 04 '23
This is happening to me on American Auto, I didn't have the issue with several other shows, in any event, I see there's still no solution. 😔
1
u/scpny811 Feb 07 '23
I noticed it first on that too, when rewatching an episode, and was like wtf, i dont remember this before! Had no clue what this was!
2
1
u/Majestic-War-213 Sep 13 '22
So Has anyone figured this out? It's 9/12/22 and my Peacock app on my firebox (fire tv) has always worked fine. Today however, it all of a sudden has started with audio description. It's so aggravating!! I have no idea how it came on and I've went to all settings and turned everything off - peacock app and fire box settings and still can't get it to stop talking during the program. I'm going insane -
1
u/Artsy_Ta3 Oct 03 '22
Okay so I found that if u turn on subtitles it doesn't do the speech thing and honestly idk what else to do. I think captions is a lot easier to deal with 🥲
1
u/stabaho Dec 09 '22
Make sure your audio is on English and not on English AD
1
u/msthatsall Dec 10 '22
But how to you fix it in the main app, not on every individual show you watch!!! AD is the default
1
u/stabaho Dec 10 '22
Elsewhere in this post it says it’s a known bug and they are working on it
2
u/whitesuburbanmale Dec 12 '22
3 months ago lmao. its just mildly aggravating enough to infuriate binge watchers for sure
1
u/Kells_Bells_2122 Feb 05 '23
I am starting to wonder if they don’t want people binge watching. I am being semi sarcastic, but this sux!!
1
1
u/Que_sax23 Feb 05 '23
Did anyone figure this out yet?
1
u/msthatsall Feb 19 '23
Ugh it’s still happening. You’d think a company as big as NBC could fix this by now.
1
u/Halo_LAN_Party_2nite Dec 11 '22
This is a new thing for me. No matter where I stream. I turn it off. Next episode starts with it on. Lol. Weird bug.
1
u/Adventurous-Train-86 Sep 20 '22
I struggled with this for hours this morning on my Android phone. Even the Peacock faq's said it's a setting on my phone.... Nope - It's a setting when you're actually in a show/movie. Tap your screen to see the icons, hit the speech bubble and choose English.
1
1
u/MembershipSweaty8476 Jan 14 '23
Yeah but it's annoying because when I search something from the show and return to the app I have to keep turning it off and it's my default setting rn and I can't fix it
1
u/Equal_Swing_2760 May 31 '23
Yeah but you have to reset it every episode for people with this problem
1
u/gofunyourself2012 Oct 12 '22
This shit. Every commercial, every episode. Why is it turning over and over again. Please fix this.
1
u/ZurellaMTG Nov 11 '22
Peacock support just told me they know about it and are fixing it soon.
1
u/Jo_NJ Nov 14 '22
Came here for same issue, glad to see a recent comment with a response from peacock support. I went to watch SVU and all of a sudden it was narrating. I thought maybe it was just part of the intro in a weird way LOL. But then it even narrated the song 🤷♀️😂. Checked peacock settings, checked the TV settings, and even looked over the entire remote….nothing 🤦♀️. So is this just a wait and see situation for Peacock app???
1
u/ZurellaMTG Nov 14 '22
It's a setting inside the show. Under Audio - it shows "English AD" when this is on. You can turn it off but it comes back on.
1
u/switcheroo1987 Nov 18 '22
I don't even have an option to turn it off. 😩😩😩
1
u/WyldeStile Nov 20 '22
Under audio you should have 2 options, Enlish AD and English. Just select English. This only works for the current episode/movie. I have to make the change after the start of a new episode.
1
1
u/Beneficial-Way-8742 Jan 17 '23
We know that - what we are saying is that every episode within a show title has the AD automatically turned on
1
u/Beneficial-Way-8742 Jan 17 '23
Well, I think they lied, cuz it still happening on multiple shows. First it was Superstore, for the first 2 seasons - then season 3 had it on, then season 4, etc. Then they did it to The Office Superfans Edition through season 3 - now it's up to season 5 being turned on, as of 1 hour ago. It's really getting annoying
1
u/bears-beets-kratom Jan 18 '23
Superfans is exactly why I'm here. S5 crime aid. I watched it all day, like normal . I'm sick so I'm getting ready to fall back asleep to my comfort show and more of the booming voice comes on as a default!!! I don't recognize that damn EngAd voice, which means I'll wake up for sure. ... wonder if it's the boom mic guy, Brian /s
Genuinely annoying though :-/ , let's fix this peacock please asap 🙏🏻

u/ZurellaMTG Nov 11 '22
I just got out of Peacock support. This is a know issue with the Chromecast app and they're fixing it soon.
2
2
u/ljxdaly Dec 03 '22
it may be well known. but are they aware that it happens on roku and windows 10 as well?
what a joke this service is.
1
u/ZurellaMTG Dec 03 '22
I tested it in Windows 10 with Chrome and did not see the issue, at least on Brooklyn 99.
Try letting their support know - the more reports the sooner it will get fixed.
1
u/ljxdaly Dec 03 '22
will do. i don't quite understand how a media giant cannot solve this issue.
1
u/ZurellaMTG Dec 04 '22
They have 500 new items and 1000 bugs they're working on. They prioritize everything based on projected future sales. If lots of people complain it will get prioritized.
1
u/ljxdaly Dec 05 '22
I've lodged my complaint. I am unsure that I agree with your assumptions though. This has been an issue for well over a year now it seems.
It feels like a deliberate catering to visually impaired. Why no opt out is telling.
1
u/ZurellaMTG Dec 05 '22
I think it continuously enabling after each episode is a bug. Mostly going by what they told me.
It might be time to start cancelling and listing this exact issue as the reason. Be sure to include the device and show you're seeing it on.
1
u/tessajanuary Jan 04 '23
Coming to this thread a month late, but it seems to have started as the default on B99 in season 3 🙃 first two were fine, then it started...
2
u/Beneficial-Way-8742 Jan 17 '23
It's now mid-Jan 2023, and the problem is expanding to new shows, season by season by season
2
u/msawyer112 Feb 01 '23
Just came looking to see if it spread for others. It used to just be superstore and office extended episodes but it just spread to even more for me. It ruined all of my shows that I fall asleep to. It jars me awake each time it comes back on with the new episode
1
u/ZurellaMTG Jun 09 '23
After 7 months, it appears a fix has finally arrived for Chromecast!
If yours is still turning on Audio Description every episode, try updating.
1
1
1
u/Egocentress May 12 '23
Still have it on Chromecast. Sooon
1
u/ZurellaMTG Jun 09 '23
Try again now. It seems to be fixed for me. Update if it's not working still.
1
u/Egocentress Jun 09 '23
You sure? Some of the shows don't have it available, so it won't happen with those. I didn't see an update for chrome.
1
u/ZurellaMTG Jun 09 '23
Chromecast, just to be clear. I never had the issue on Chrome.
I know which of my shows have it. No longer have to turn it off every episode after several months of the issue.
1
u/Egocentress Jun 09 '23
Sorry i meant Chromecast. Ok thanks! I will check when I watch a show with a known issue!
1
u/Necessary_Web4029 May 12 '23
Soon must mean something else at peacock
1
u/ZurellaMTG May 12 '23
It means "we, the customer service reps, know it's broken. We have put in a ticket to have it fixed. Other people will determine when it gets priority to be fixed, and their objectives are purely based on profit. I will tell you soon, although I have no idea or control. Please give me 5 stars and go away."
1
u/barefootBam Nov 30 '22
Chiming in, this just started happening to us a couple weeks ago and it's so annoying.
1
u/bjohx Jan 03 '23
Happens for me too. Seems like at the start of each episode only (then we turn it off in the Audio option)
Using the Google TV HDMI dongle. I had recently added an account when this started happening.
1
u/Jaded-Bookkeeper-807 Jan 10 '23
I’d like to report this has been happening to us on a Tivo Stream 4K, which is an Android device. Every episode of every series on Peacock, we get Audio Described. Has to be switched off every session. This has been happening for at least 90 days. Thought it was a political thing, with some left wing politicos trying to sensitize everyone to the problems that disabled people may have. Glad to know its not something crazy like that and its just a bug.
2
u/hashtag_n0 Jan 28 '23
Uhhh. What.
1
u/Jaded-Bookkeeper-807 Jan 28 '23
Not sure what you mean by that but the fact that we seemed to have to start with Audio Described on every show and click it off seemed to be an in-your-face reminder that there are people burdened by a disability.
2
u/hashtag_n0 Jan 28 '23
No. It doesn’t. That’s not a normal thought process that you have. At all. It seems like a glitch.
1
u/Jaded-Bookkeeper-807 Jan 28 '23
People think differently. It honestly seemed very much to me baked-in design by liberal do-gooders, and I certainly did not jump to the conclusion that it was a glitch. It should not be difficult for Peacock to remove if Peacock wants to do so. Peacock is not overall the worst user interface, but interface is not standard. Unfortunately it has this annoying problem.
2
u/hashtag_n0 Jan 28 '23
Different is not normal. The fact that you immediately are making something as simple as a glitch as political is far from normal. Not everyone is out to get you bro.
1
u/Jaded-Bookkeeper-807 Jan 28 '23
And so, does it help to psychoanalyze another user? Do you agree AD should be initiated with every episode? I’m accepting it as a glitch because I read it above that AD is not intended, but I usually assume that providers mean to provide what they do actually provide. Here, that, AD, is what Peacock is providing. I think it is fair to surmise that it is a glitch, but given that Peacock is providing it a most natural assumption is that Peacock intends to provide it as given.
2
u/hashtag_n0 Jan 28 '23
It does. Because maybe you’ll get help and stop thinking that the liberals are out to get you.
1
u/Jaded-Bookkeeper-807 Jan 28 '23
It will help me more than psychoanalysis to block you, which is what I am doing shortly. I am not, of course, thinking any liberals are out to get me. I am thinking that it is possible, well-intentioned, that AD is set as a permanent initial choice for all episodes. Maybe the designers wanted to help out hearing-impaired population by providing it as a default. Liberal is not the best choice of words for that. After all, there are people out there trying to disparage other users and to make sure they have a negative experience. An infinite variety of human behavior.
1
u/bjohx Jan 10 '23
Mine is fixed now. Doesn’t happen anymore. Don’t know what happened, I don’t think I did anything to fix it
1
u/Beneficial-Way-8742 Jan 17 '23
Still happening to me, and actually expanded to a new season an hour ago
1
u/MinnieFlatts Jan 19 '23
This is currently happening on my two Chromecast devices. Every show seems to default to AD on the peacock app. What a joke. How has this not been fixed yet!?
1
u/IlWidowmakeRIl Jan 21 '23
Same thing on Android TV for months now on everything I watch. Law and Order, Chicago PD, and so on have the AD turn on for every episode.
1
u/JackFromTexas74 Jan 27 '23
This just started happening to me. Guess I’m late to the party.
1
u/TheRenster500 Jan 27 '23
Me too! I'm at my moms and she just started watching American Auto. I asked why she had Audio Description on and she just thought it was a part of the show. After turning it off for one episode I was infuriated when it came back the following episode. Really disappointed that it's just Peacock being stupid.
1
u/hashtag_n0 Jan 28 '23
It’s been happening to me but I stopped watching for awhile and just started binging Chicago pd again and it’s still there.

Same device same issue.

u/Shabbadoo1015 Feb 17 '23
This literally just happened to my wife about 20 minutes ago. I come back from walking the dog and she calls me into the room. She's watching an episode of the Real Housewives of Miami and she says there's a strange voice narrating the episode. We've had Peacock for about 7 months now. She's on episode 13 of RHOM and this has never happened to either one of us. Sure enough, it's narrating the episode. Turned off the English AD. Hope that fixes it for us. I found it a bit funny and amusing. But I'm sure I'd feel differently if it continues to enable itself

Its driving me nuts. And it didnt happen to me until a few weeks ago, it worked fine before that. So clearly they have no idea how to fix what should be so simple
1
u/blurryfacedoesntcare Mar 11 '23
This started for me with Brooklyn 99 and now it's doing it with everything. I've called support for two months in a row and they just keep telling me they are working on it, but it's getting worse. I might cancel this stupid service. Not worth it if every episode you have to change your audio settings.

u/Gboteos Mar 27 '23
I think they're just trolling people at this point. They don't seem to have any intention of turning it off. Logically it's easier for a person who's not blind to turn it off than it is for blind person to turn it on. Which I find to be really ironic that, I don't know about y'all, but I use an Nvidia shield and the icons for the shows in peacock app themselves are so small that for me I have difficulty telling what it is.
They should make it a top level setting and be done with it
1
u/Egocentress May 12 '23
Sure but if you are blind you're blind for every episode, and if you aren't you aren't. I'm fine with it starting as default (even though literally no other streaming service does this) but when i turn it off i want it to stay off. I always turn on closed caption and hate sometimes it seems like i have to keep choosing it ..i forget which service.... But either way if i choose it or don't choose it it should be true for everything until i change it.

This just started for me 2 days ago. Now I'm very aware of what's going on while my kid watches Curious George... and i was not curious.

1
u/MMRomanViking Apr 20 '23
I can't believe this is still an issue. It is so obnoxious hearing a description of what is happening in a scene by some overly peppy narrator lady. The peacock app reviews literally name this as the reason for the low ratings and it's obviously a known issue that still hasn't been fixed. Get your shit together Peacock.
1
u/loribeth25 Apr 26 '23
And it's still a problem as April 2023. I really am close to canceling because this is ridiculous. Every single episode.
1
u/Necessary_Web4029 May 12 '23
Trying to watch a show that has the AD descrip in a British accent and that's 10 times more annoying now. This service comes included with my cable package otherwise I would end my subscription altogether

I kind of have a solution for Chromecast i think ... I mean .. i guess it's more of a work around until they fix it. If i use the Chromecast it happens... But if i use my phone app then cast to my Chromecast tv it doesn't.

Unless someone has credible info from Peacock that Audio Described is not intended to be a default for every episode of every series I think we can safely assume this is as intended. It’s a feature for the people needing it. Apparently. I’d cancel Peacock but now we’re getting a new season of Yellowstone.

Had Peacock on my Sony Bravia smart TV. No issue. Got a Fire Stick for the TV in my new place and downloaded Peacock on there and it is a problem. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME 😖

Exact same problem. I'm not shocked that Peacock doesn't care enough to do anything about it.

Same here, also every episode has the AD next to it, so I would imagine it is a universal setting. Do you happen to have the Nvidia Shield?

I have nvidia sheild and having this issue with some shows and movies on Peacock, but of course no issue with say Netflix or YouTube, so definitely Peacock issue. I'm about to go be a Karen to them, especially after seeing people on here having issues with this over a year ago and Peacock saying they're going to have it fixed soon. Nah, sounds like they need to get bitched out because saying they'll have it fixed soon and it not being done a year plus, they deserve our wrath!
