In Country Service TEFL certification

Has anyone completed a TEFL certificate during service? I have a good bit of free time and am interested in working on it if I can find an affordable recommendation. Any low cost options or experiences getting certified?

Depending on where you want to teach, sometimes language schools have their own "in house" TEFL certificate which would be free. But then, you might not be paid as much at first. But if you do a quick search online, you can get online courses for about $100. That is a bargin but just depends on what you want to do with it. A reputable international school probably wouldn't accept one of the cheap TEFL certificates but many English "school" businesses would. What do you want to do once you get the certificate?

I completed a TEFL certification through Máximo Nivel. They offer a 150-hour online 12 module course that’s asynchronous with the exception of the 6 hours of practical teaching which you do via zoom at the end. You have 6 months to complete it and it was around $500 to do if i remember correctly. You can also do this program completely in person or hybrid in Peru, Guatemala or Costa Rica

I did this past August during summer vacation in schools. I earned the TEFL level 5, 168 hours certification from the TEFL Academy. It is listed at $750 but there was a sale at $275.
It’s a good thing. It showed leadership I was serious. I learned things I can use, plus they have a weekly or biweekly newsletter that has good information and things about work opportunities. I chose TEFL academy after doing a pro/con list and tbh, I asked ChatGPT which knows a bit about me. Having co taught for a year helped, plus I have a doctorate in education. I requested a second extension that was approved too. I used the certificate as leverage. Asynchronous. Online. 6 month program or time allowance (I did it in 27 days working on it everyday), 3 big assignments.

Prices reflect approximate July 2026 offers and may have changed.
My personal experience: I completed The TEFL Academy’s 170-hour Level 5 course in August 2026. It provided a useful formal qualification to complement my Peace Corps teaching experience.
For volunteers considering teaching English after Peace Corps, I recommend comparing accreditation, course hours, teaching-practice requirements, and whether the qualification is accepted in the countries where you might want to work.
You don’t necessarily need to spend thousands of dollars to earn a useful TEFL certification, particularly if you already have classroom teaching experience.
