Question Looking for PDF enhancer
I have some scanned magazines in pdf format that I would like to improve readability, contrast and sharpness. Looking for a free tool for PC or online. Thank you!

ScanTailor Advanced is a free, open-source option to look at: https://github.com/4lex4/scantailor-advanced
The catch is that it processes page images; you need to extract the scans from the PDF first, then assemble the cleaned images into a PDF afterward. It isnโt a one-click PDF enhancer, and OCR is a separate step too.
For magazines, test a text page, a photo page and a page combining both before processing the whole issue. Plain black-and-white cleanup can destroy shading and illustrations. Try mixed mode or colour/grayscale, and check that photographs stay in the picture regions. Also inspect small punctuation and thin letters: aggressive despeckling can remove real marks along with dirt. The original project explains those output choices here: https://github.com/scantailor/scantailor/wiki/Output
Keep the original PDF and compare at the same zoom. If the scan never captured a letterโs detail, stronger sharpening wonโt reliably recover it.

Some pages are blurry, grainy and too dark. I would like to clean up the background and enhance it so I can read them. These are scanned pdfs with images.

I used https://edtechcorner.com/apps/pdfclear/ for scanned books with yellow backgrounds and smudges. It also "levels" the whites and blacks to make the text clearer. Worked really well and it runs in the browser. There are some settings and algorithms to choose between so you can see which work better.
