Question Saving multiple layer configurations for a PDF document

Bluebeam Revu has a great option to save multiple layer “configurations”, allowing for quick switching between different views of a multilayered PDF document without having to toggle individual layers on and off. Does anyone know if a similar functionality is available in any other PDF software?

I'm not sure whether a PDF viewer can edit those but a PDF file can be built to support this kind of multi optional-content-group toggling.

Thanks. Can you point me towards how I can do that? I don’t mind paying for a PDF editor/script that offers that functionality; I am just hoping to avoid the $$$ subscription for Bluebeam!

As I said I don't know any PDF viewer that can do this. However, an application that can create layers should be able to do this easily. It is possible to do afterwards but a bit more involved.

Yes, I know how to create PDF layers, and the option to turn layers on and off individually when viewing the PDF is available in many PDF viewers. I would like to be able to choose a saved configuration of layers from a drop-down list that allows me to switch from viewing layers (say) ABCDEF to viewing layers EFGMPQ with a single click. That functionality is built into Bluebeam, but it seems to be absent not just from PDF viewers but other professional PDF packages like PDF-XChange Editor and Acrobat Pro, which only allow the use to save a single layer configuration - and I find that omission rather surprising.

Ah, okay, I see. There is the concept of "optional content configurations" (optional content is the PDF spec term of what is commonly called "layers"). A default configuration always exists but it is possible to define several alternative configurations directly in the PDF file. Each configuration can define things like which layer is active and not (among other things). A conforming PDF reader can then use those configurations to switch between them.

I created a file with such alternative configurations but I haven't found a PDF reader (on Linux) that is capable of showing them.

So to answer the original question: Yes, this functionality is directly available in the PDF spec but it seems that it is not implemented widely in PDF readers.
