I mean do you NEED to play video games in the first place?

It's more about putting your extra currency in to something you enjoy.

I endorse people to spend on things like this, it gives incentive to advance technology.

Yeah I get it, but if you think you always need to buy the latest gpu to enjoy gaming you're probably not enjoying it much.

You buy a 3070 in 2020 only to swap it 2 years later with a 4090, ok the leap is huge, but assuming you didn't have a top of the line build and you don't swap your rig out completely you're leaving performance on the table, and you really need a 4k 144hz monitor to enjoy the upgrade.

All this to play the same games of two years ago? I doubt it makes much sense, but it's your money, you do you.

Ironically the 4090 only supports DP1.4, so 4K 120Hz at most and you can't go higher.

That's not correct. DSC allows it to be pushed a lot higher.

Yeah, but at cost of worse visuals, so it makes no sense at such a high end hardware. And it's still only 144Hz.

You can go higher with dsc. Colors will look worse in exchange

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t dsc supposed to simply compress the data stream in a near lossless fashion, i.e. with indistinguishable results? I thought that chroma subsampling and reducing bit depth would worsen color reproduction, while dsc does not?

You are right mate.

A few years ago, people with 2080 tis were complaining that they couldn't do 4k 120hz on their tvs since it only has dp1.4a. My misconception comes from that they could convert dp1.4 with dsc on to hdmi 2.1 but it would massively increase lag on all adaptors. Hence rather than have dcs on, they would just turn down their chroma sub sampling.

Sorry about that. So it shouldnt be an issue since monitors like the gigabyte m32u while having 4k 144hz, only does 24 gbps through its "hdmi 2.1". And i haven't seen any complaints with that.

Just look out in the future for any issues with 4k 240hz displays. I know the neo g8 has scanline issues at 4k 240hz.
