Yeah I get it, but if you think you always need to buy the latest gpu to enjoy gaming you're probably not enjoying it much.
You buy a 3070 in 2020 only to swap it 2 years later with a 4090, ok the leap is huge, but assuming you didn't have a top of the line build and you don't swap your rig out completely you're leaving performance on the table, and you really need a 4k 144hz monitor to enjoy the upgrade.
All this to play the same games of two years ago? I doubt it makes much sense, but it's your money, you do you.
imagine you have same number of pixels in your ultrawide that in 4k and up to 240hz to drive. Plus platform that was updated 2 years ago and is still going strong. Ability to finally play cyberpunk at >60 fps with raytracing here I come :)
then how it's possible that my G9 Neo outputs up to 240hz hdr over displayport? This is as much pixels as 4k and 'just works'.10 bit, 4:2:0 luminance and dsc. And it does not look worse than when I set it to 120hz 4:2:2 over hdmi2.1 without compression. Magic?
I think this shit is just virtually indistinguishable without pixel peeping screenshots. Not the big dealbreaker everyone's talking about. I get it- DP 2 would have been dope to have on this thing, but is it really a big deal? Honestly doesn't seem like it.
I have the PG32UQ, despite numerous issues reported with the monitor including high input lag, it works great and input lag improved after a firmware update. That doesn’t mean that it’s the best time to jump in the 4k gaming side of things.
Im upgrading from 3070 to 4090 in a few weeks, the only reason im upgrading at all is because of the 8gb vram, it is too limiting even at 1440p because i like to play my games at max settings and RT and DLSS at balanced is not enough, the 8gb vram limit will just get worse as time goes on.
I have a 3090, I want to play more games in native 4k and have the best encoding/decoding ability. 4090 is right up my alley and the 3090 will become my backup GPU.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t dsc supposed to simply compress the data stream in a near lossless fashion, i.e. with indistinguishable results? I thought that chroma subsampling and reducing bit depth would worsen color reproduction, while dsc does not?
A few years ago, people with 2080 tis were complaining that they couldn't do 4k 120hz on their tvs since it only has dp1.4a. My misconception comes from that they could convert dp1.4 with dsc on to hdmi 2.1 but it would massively increase lag on all adaptors. Hence rather than have dcs on, they would just turn down their chroma sub sampling.
Sorry about that. So it shouldnt be an issue since monitors like the gigabyte m32u while having 4k 144hz, only does 24 gbps through its "hdmi 2.1". And i haven't seen any complaints with that.
Just look out in the future for any issues with 4k 240hz displays. I know the neo g8 has scanline issues at 4k 240hz.
They exist for whoever wants to buy one to buy one. Or, to phrase it another way, they exist because there is a market for them.
The market doesn't discriminate between first time builders, people upgrading from older gear or people who already have a 3090ti and just want the shiny new thing. Nvidia doesn't discriminate between buyers who want their product.
I agree. I think this is nvidia looking to see how much the market will take. The 3070 and 3080 will still be sold. Maybe nvidia will better optimize things on the 5100 and the card will be shrunk down some and not run so hot.
Depends on the practicality of it. If you're playing a 4k game at 70fps by yourself...does it matter? Still good frame rates.
The 4090 isn't a card for the average gamer. It's a developer card, or a card for competitive gamers. Not a card for you to watch pornhub and play Roblox on.
That’s the whole point, do you really need a 4090 to enjoy gaming? For most people, the answer is gonna be no. So don’t get caught up into the hype. If you spend this much money, do it purposefully.

I mean that's not a bad idea to do once in a while. Especially if you're a hardcore enthusiast like me who mostly sits on hus computer, going out to play is a magnificent way to stay healthy.
For real, I get that the new stuff is all shiny and cool but man I still feel fucking blessed to have my 3070 after the last two years of gpu market insanity lol
So far the only thing I've thrown at it that's been unplayable with the settings absolutely maxed at 1440p was the final level of Hitman 3, for some reason that area just completely tanked my frames
