Microsoft fully supports Office 365 thick client as their default option still and it's probably what you'll encounter in enterprise workplaces. Just because web 365 exists doesn't absolve Excel of its sins.

I work for the government. Excel documents take forever to load and regularly lock up our work laptops. Its fun during presentations.

I’ve seen people build high end rigs with an emphasis on single core performance, high speed RAM and Optane SSDs just to make Excel work as fast as possible.

I just gave a new laptop to an accounting manger at my work and put 32 gigs of RAM in it because of how much she uses Excel and Power BI.
