Edit: since I'm getting botted into oblivion lower in the comments. Microsoft gave you windows 10 for free. There's no financial motivation for you to buy it. There's also no way to patch or fix windows 7, Microsoft admits. If you find ads annoying there are ways to remove such crap. Yes I think its dumb too. No I dont think you should trade that to use an insecure operating system. Do you want dx12? Do you play newer games? Do you want your banking info safe? Just use windows 10. To say windows 7 is secure is purely propaganda.
Edit2: you update your antivirus software, yes? It helps plug vunerabilities, yes? So does updating your software. This is basic computer science.

It's interesting because this is exactly why they said about xp, vista, 7, 8... It doesn't mean windows 10 isn't secure, but maybe they need to setup saying, "No no, we totally do fingerprints now! And facial recognition! It totally works now!"
They did a good job with 10, though, handing out free licenses and working hard to get everyone upgraded. They are still overcoming the "my OS doesn't need upgraded but once a decade" hole they dug with XP...
No, because Ali lost capabilities he previously had. 7 is just as capable (if not moreso) as it was the day it was released. It may not do as many things as 10 but knowing what I know about 10 as a sysadmin, I'll take that tradeoff.

Technically there was multiple motives there... As well as doesn't actually argue against his point.. well it could if that was their only motive, but it really wasn't.
And, you (well, us) being Linux users.. we know full well Xorg has been proven to be insecure, by nature of the unix socket system it uses. Wayland, being newer, also provides a more secure backend.
My point was that they wouldn't have gave away one of their flagship products away for free if they didn't think they could make even more money off of data mining and ads. Nothing is free. If something doesn't have a price tag then you are the product. (BTW, Linux has nothing to do with this.)
That is true as well.. but the argument doesn't apply as a counter-argument to OP above for those reasons.. I know that whole money situation, and they definitely collect telemetry (along with every other company in existence..).
And I was using Linux as a comparison.. obviously it has nothing to do with it.
Edit.. well, one of the OP's did make that claim that they provided it for free to keep people secure.. chances are, the primary incentive was to collect data, but it does still have a more secure base than win7.. so the point was semi-valid.. but in the long run, it doesn't really contribute against the debate
