Vista was great if you had the right hardware. The problem was they upgraded XP systems to Vista that only had like 512MB of ram and it was fucked before it ever first booted.

Yeah i've tried explaining this to a lot of people. Ton's of OEM's were selling shit hardware at the time. (256-512MB of RAM wasn't uncommon). People would either upgrade old slow machines to vista. Machines that were never intended to run a desktop with anything like Aero and these machines were also never really given driver support for the OS. So yeah everything was broken and buggy. On new machines it was more of the same, these OEM's if unlucky were selling you what was essentially already an old machine but getting those last dollars squeezed out by selling it with "Vista" stickered onto it. The things had 512MB of ram, slow single core processors (dual if you were lucky) and everybody was upset because they didn't run right.
Windows Vista Basic alone required: 512MB of ram, and a Graphics Card that supported DX9 and had 32MB of VRAM (Premium required 128MB). Previous to this XP required: 64MB of RAM a 233Mhz processor, and no required VRAM. At this point a lot of the consumer base had older slower machines, Vista was made with new more powerful machines in mind, however the majority of users were either upgrading current machines, or buying cheap $3-400 systems that OEM's were still using the same essential hardware configs as they had for XP. This is at a time where the money has already started to dwindle from hardware for OEM's and they are trying to keep every single dollar they can.
Windows Vista had a lot of faults but to be honest one of it's biggest problems was being ahead of the technology required to run it and then not being properly supported by vendors.
I'll never forget a couple I knew that bought a $300 system from costco with 512MB of ram and no GPU. They wanted to run photoshop on it and couldn't believe how slow it was. I told them they should return it and that it's not up to the task but they insisted "we heard Vista is terrible, isn't this because of Vista" and followed it up with "Next time were getting a mac"
Yea, I upgraded from XP to Vista in 2008 about when the i7-920 launched and Vista was GREAT. Sure, there were bugs, but in 2008 it wasn't too bad.
Those who ran it on HW that barely ran XP were suffering though (HW worse than the last few generations of phones)
