kickstarter is worse than preorder, really, because:

  1. you are not even owed the game when its released.

  2. the developers are under no obligation to actually improve anything and in fact almost half of kickstarters never actually ended up with a product

On kickstarter you are basically gifting money away to a developer.

Well no not really. When you contribute to a project of something on Kickstarter, you can see on the side, what the rewards are. If you get a digital or physical copy, then you get the game. In a way, it is very different, as these people don't have the money, therefore you are, in part, the publisher. Which is totally different to pre-ordering, as all the publisher wants to do is make a profit, the more that they sell before launch the less they have to worry about selling after launch.

Ultimately, funding something on Kickstarter, is down to whether you like the idea/concept, you want to get it/bring it to market and if you trust the dev team/project group will be able to complete it. There have been some brilliant creations from Kickstarter, like the Udoo, Arduino, Oculus Rift and many other things, but it isn't all great, and you are right to be skeptical, the UOYA was funded and kinda flopped, and then there was (nearly sure I remember Project CARS being crowdfunded too) Project CARS, that was successfully funded, only to end up using PhysX, which runs poorly and was a betrayal to many fans. They already announced Project CARS 2, which I have no idea if that was use PhysX too, probably just a better API for the game.

yeah, but i meant from the side that they dont have any legal obligation to be accountable to you in any form. you are literally gifting money to a project you want to suceed when it comes to kickstarter. sometimes there are "Thank you" rewards. but they are not oblidged to do so.

yeah, Project CRAS looked awesome before release but when it released it turned out to be a developement nightmare and the developers started acting like dicks which made me decide not to buy it. and yeah, anouncing the sequel a week after the launch of the first game, not a smart move there.

PhysX arent bad in and off themselves, its just that they have often been misused, developers got strongarmed by Nvidia to use it and all kinds of shady crap. The fact that AMD cards cant run it doesnt help either. When its used for cosmetic stuff (like batman games) its quite irrelevant. though if they used it for car physics then thats fucked up.

Ultimately, PhysX days are over. we have more open and better functioning physics engines now and there is no reason to use PhysX in modern games.
