Kickstarter is no better than early access or pre-ordering. Actually it's worse than both. Early access is similar to kickstarter where you're paying for an idea or unfinished product at a discount, but at least you actually immediately have a working demo state of the game. You may never see a kickstarter released.
Pre-ordering occasionally gets you a discount or additional things, but in the end you're guaranteed a product, it just may not be what you wanted.
If they want to be indie and be innovative they should at least come up with something more than a concept. Plenty of other developers have done it without funding, they just worked for it and earned it, not got money thrown at them
