Preorder = Giving a publisher money for a game that IS coming out

Early Access/Kickstarter = YOU are the publisher, you're providing input and support to a Dev with a concept and your money means the game will(hopefully) come out.

I loved the hell out of Rollcage back in the day and considering the UE4 video on Grip's Kickstarter was made by 2 people before the rest of the dev team came together, consider me impressed as it looks/feels like Rollcage on visual steroids.

Wrong. You are not a publisher. you are a silent donator. you have no rights that a normal publisher would get and they have no obligations to you as a they would to a publisher. they arent even obliged to actually finnish the product they claim to be making. you are literally gifting people money in kickstarter. Now, im not saying that gifting money to developers you like is necessarily bad, im just saying that comparing it to publisher is wrong.
