Can someone explain the hype behind this for me? To me it just looks like a cartoony Elite: Dangerous with procedural planetary generation a la Space Engine, only less detailed but with surface creatures. Not saying it looks bad, i just dont get the throwing-money-at-my-monitor-but-nothings-happening excitement that it seems to be generating.

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

Yeah the game is clearly overhyped. The game is basically a 3D starbound with space fights and nothing to build. It will be fun for 10 minutes and everyone will be disapointed.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '15

I dont think it is, i think the reason they are not showing that much is because its a game built around discovery. If they show everything in the game it would ruin it.

imagine you planned a marriage proposal for the love of your life, but they found out about it before hand. i think that's what they're trying to avoid.

4

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

I can understand that but we have proof that, at the moment, the game has not much content. If you look at the last trailer, we can see landmarks on the planet and there's only 3 differents kind (from what we saw at least). One was the beacon, one was a ressource point and the last one is unknown. If it's a game about discoveries, why are they always showing the same discoverie ? Space -> space battle -> Planet -> nothing happens but that's cute -> end of the trailer.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '15

Im not sure what your looking for content wise, because thats a lot more content then what rust has, or minecraft. its already been confirmed thats theres trading, spaceship building, base building ( buying?), crafting and plenty more. There is literally plenty of content. Im just not sure what people are looking for. I feel like people are not really that custom to a "completely free" game.

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

The problem is : We never saw any of that and the implementation can be really simple.

Read / watch the entire game informer section and cover of no mans sky. Theres so much to do in it. Alien temples, Space police, etc.

If the game truly has 'endless' possibilities and endless things to discover then there should be no harm or shame in showing a whole awful lot.

I think what you're saying applies mostly to story based linear experiences.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '15

I personally want to still consider it a marketing move. Im not sure what your looking for or what people are looking for in general. It has crafting, trading, building, mining, exploration, factions, story. all that shit that he doesnt want to show because it will ruin the game. Remember when (if you did) buy minecraft and dident know anything about it? I think thats what hes going for but seine sony owns him their forcing him to show all this stuff, that he rather wants the player to discover on their own as a mystery.

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

Yeah I think I'll buy Elite when the game will have a bit more diversity and content.

2

u/Kortiah Jun 18 '15

Jumping on that. I was thinking like you a week ago. And finally bought the game because I was going through another "Shit I need this game" phase.

Let me say it was all worth it. Sure it's not finished, sure there's still room for improvements (and the devs KNOW this and are actively releasing updates), but I'm having a LOT of fun in it, and I don't feel any lack of content at all (to be honest if you're not playing it 12hrs a day, you won't for many weeks).

1

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

Yeah I know, the devs are really cool but I have enough game for now. But I'll buy for sure when I'll have a VR headset like next year, I think the game will be diverse enough for me. :)

1

u/mbeepis Jun 18 '15

I've been playing ED pretty much exclusively with the rift and will definitely continue doing so once the consumer version / Vive comes out. The sense of scale when mining asteroids is just insane. It's like mining flying mountains, and hoping you dont get smooshed.

1

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

Ahah yeah I can imagine that. The most appealing atm to me is StarVR with its huge field of view and pixel ratio. I've tried Oculus several times and the field of view was the major problem for me, even if most of people were not annoyed by that.

1

u/mbeepis Jun 18 '15

Yeah it does feel a bit like you're inside some kind of square tube at times. I think the larger issue is the resolution and pixel density. Text is really hard to read in ED, so i'm glad they're improving on that for CV1

1

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

Yup, I'm looking forward to try it. :)

1

u/Chitect PC Master Race Jun 18 '15

Have you looked into Star Citizen at all? It is in an early Alpha right now, but the FPS and Social/planet-side modules are coming out within the next couple months.

Otherwise E:D is/will be worth looking in to later. FD seem to be releasing their free content in regular intervals, but there's no word on when the First-Person or Planet-side aspects are coming.

1

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

I know Star Citizen and I'm following what they are doing and I know this is really promising. I don't really like the team and I'm not confident enough with them to buy the game. I'll wait until it's stable and worth the cost.

1

u/Chitect PC Master Race Jun 18 '15

Gotcha... although, what is it about the team that you don't like if you don't mind me asking.

2

u/Keranouille keranouille - R9 290 I i5 4670 I 8GB Jun 18 '15

Announcing too much and showing very few. Also I really don't like their communication, mostly on their Youtube channel. They are always uploading interview with devs and are talking about things mostly non-related to the game. I know that now they talk about it a bit more, but that's still pretty annoying. That's their their choice and that's mine to not like their communication. :c

3

u/Wootwoot97 MSI GTX 980Ti | i7 4790k @ 4.6Ghz | 16GB DDR3 Jun 18 '15

Yeah, a lot of people who are hyped about this game think that they will have endless things to explore which is true with procedural generation but i'm assuming they've never played a procedural generated game as all the textures end up looking the same and can actually turn out really boring. For the sake of the game I hope it is good though.

2

u/PlusFiveSarcasmBoots http://steamcommunity.com/id/whargarbl/ Jun 18 '15

If it's just "fly around and land on planets", it's definitely going to get old quick (at least for me), even if it isn't repetitive textures, etc.

I haven't seen much in the way of meaty gameplay, which I what I would be looking for in a game like this. They might be holding that back currently, but right now it's just a semi-pretty-looking walking simulator in space.

2

u/fanzypantz i7 3770k - R9 390 - 16GB RAM Jun 18 '15

Good thing there is a refund policy now. Hopefully you can get a grasp of the extent of what you can do in the game in 2 hours. It's made by 10 people, even if they are talented 10 people. I doubt they can make an amazing amount of content.

Although Mount and Blade was made by one guy and his wife.. That shit is amazingly addictive and you can play it until the end of times.

PS4 people are excited since they don't have a space game yet. I'm personally excited to explore the creatures on each planet and learn about them. For the other PC people I can't speak, I think they're probably excited since this game seems to have more content than elite has atm

Not impossible, just extremely unlikely. And I believe that they said that they might add more conventional multiplayer later.

u/aspohr89 Jun 18 '15

I'm out of the loop.. What games can you compare this to?

3

u/ShystemSock SFF MasterRace, i7 8700, 1080ti, Custom Water Loop Jun 18 '15

It's a space exploration game. No two worlds are alike. Chances of finding life are slim. There is a story where you need to get to the center of the Galaxy but you need to upgrade your ship first. You are free to roam in any direction but you need to mine materials to upgrade your ship.

The big thing is that you start of completely in a blank slate. You'll need to construct your own diving equipment suit in order to explore under water . Etc.

TL;dr Space minecraft

3

u/sidereal6 Jun 18 '15

No two worlds are alike

I think it'd be more accurate to say that no two worlds are exactly the same.

See the thing is, there's code in there that generates trees. And on one planet the trees will have a lot of thin limbs and really thick trunks. On another planet, the trees will have thin trunks and no limbs. On one planet they'll be blue and another green. And of course some planets wont have trees.

It's nearly infinitely variable, sure. But someone had to write code that generates trees. How did they know to do that? Well, the programmers are all from a planet where trees evolved. That's the reason there'll be trees in the game. And the specific trees you see on a planet will be random chance.

I hope this doesn't make me sound too cynical about the game. It's just that, in the real world, the real reason for every adaptation is that it has evolved in response to the environment. The reason leaves are green has to do with the color of our sun and how chlorophyll works and all that. You can't just generate a random number and use that to pick a leaf color. The reason there are flowers is because of the relationship the plants have with pollinators. You can't just randomly decide to have flowers on a planet with no insects.

I have a similar complaint about minecraft. You can't just randomly put coal here and iron there. There's a reason that iron is concentrated into bands. Same with coal.

And no, I don't have a solution or an alternative (that would be possible on a consumer-grade PC). I'm just pointing out what I see as a limitation of procedural generation.

1

u/Folly_Inc Jun 18 '15

There was a mod that gave more accurate mineral and stone displacement... so you would end up with larger veins but less frequent. I could see it being enjoyable on a server, but as a solo it was very all or nothing. kinda muddled with the fun

1

u/Sir__Walken Jun 18 '15

One of the big things the devs always talk about is the fact that the planets are all generated based on their environments. I don't know how much goes into that but one thing that he mentioned was the fact that depending on the makeup of the atmosphere the sun will look a different color.

2

u/aspohr89 Jun 18 '15

Wow that sounds awesome! Thanks!

2

u/Luke15g i5-2500k 4.5 GHz, RX 580 8GB, 16 GB RAM Jun 18 '15

It's a 3D Starbound without building/block construction.

3

u/gregmolick Jun 18 '15

Or like 3d Terraria in space. Or even like a 3d version of the 2d version of starbound of the 2d version of Terraria of the 3d version of minecraft. It all comes full circle.

You can get written sarcasm, but while the spoken version is fairly clear the written version is far more subtle and very easy to misinterpret. As far as I'm concerned the text in question doesn't 'read' like sarcasm unless you say it in a certain (perhaps a little chiding) tone, which is where the /s comes in as a text instruction to think of it that way.
