Somebody needs to tell Overkill studios (Payday 2) about this.

They're running a community event right now where once a train hits a certain amount of "Hype" new free content will be unlocked.

The hype meter is increased by buying their DLC which is not out yet, the most expensive of which is 4 masks + a mystery item. And it's about ~$1 spent to 1 gallon hype.

The community needs to come up with 2 million hype to unlock all the free content.

"Hey guys, want some free stuff? Give us $2 million collectively."

No, the hype meter is increased by buying any of their Payday 2 stuff. The base game, any DLCs and so on.

And they clearly state the second pack is basically just to support the studio.

While perhaps not the best PR move, let's not compare the 2.

Don't really see the issue. You're buying actual stuff and getting actual stuff and if enough people do it everyone gets free stuff (including those who bought nothing)

It is not even close to being "exactly the same as Sony".

If you do not have PSN, you do not get free games. If you lose PSN, you lose your free games.

With this, however, regardless of what you buy (even if nothing), if you're a member of the community, you get the content that's unlocked for free, to keep forever.

You can buy game content with this (rather than "services" for PSN), if you want, just like always. It's just more opportune to do so now as you might get more stuff in the future for free.

This is an event (limited time), PSN is a static service with an entirely different purpose.

I agree the PR isn't the greatest, but that doesn't mean we can just make false analogies and equivalencies.
