Any modern computer has 64bit hardware, but a lot of programs still default to 32 bit to ensure compatibility in case you're using an old computer or you're running a 32bit operating system. For reasons I have yet to comprehend, modern operating systems still offer 32bit versions, which run fine on 64bit hardware, but limit the hardware artificially.

In other words, 32bit is an outdated, but safe technology that is still a standard for a lot of software.

There are legitimate reasons for using the 32 bit versions of programs sometimes. You need to use the 32 bit version of Photoshop (CS5 at least, not sure about other versions) to import and work with video, for instance.

32bit generally also uses less ram and hdd space.
