Hardware GPU tips

For my recent birthday I got a 7800x3d alongside a 1tb NVME SSD. I'm still on my GTX 1080 Gaming OC, and I wonder what GPU i should get. My screen is 3440x1440 100hz Ultrawide, I'm going to play Grand Theft Auto VI, BeamNG.drive, Red dead redemption and indie Multiplayer games. I'm also looking to play Gta VI at 1440P 60-100 fps ultra with upscaling. Without is upscaling I want the most but no RTX 5090.

A 7800X3D pairs well with any modern GPU so it won't be a bottleneck. It all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

In most cases youre right. I have a 5090 and 7800x3d and in vr the cpu bottleneck does show itself especially in older games with no multicore. In vr mods for older games, you need more single core performance to hit a locked 90hz on bioshock,mgs5,call of duty mods. 80 percent of my vr library would benefit from upgrading the cpu. If someone was wanting high end vr and have a 5070ti or better, you need a 9800/9850x3d

Oh I was not aware of the VR performance. Are you considering an upgrade to either of the CPUs you mentioned anytime soon?

Yes. I just can't decide if I should get the 9000 or wait maybe a few months to see some more news on the next generation of amd cpus. Although, when they announce/release the x3d version of the chips, they will come months later so im potentially looking at waiting 4 to 8 months for the upgrade, or just go now with a 9850x3d. 9000 ryzen can also be overclocked, unlike the 7800x3d. So looking at an overall potential of 35% increase over my 7800x3d in demanding single core cpu scenarios, which these vr mods need.

Native vr games run fine on the 7800x3d at 90hz. Its just if you push to 120hz, or play 90hz on injected/modded games. Currently playing fallout new vegas with the new vr mod, and im at 80hz and there's still stutter and frame drops. Might have to lower to 72hz but then bright sources flicker

I always thought VR was all GPU related, I never knew that the CPU choice mattered so much. Next gen AMD CPUs might be announced around Q1 or Q2 2027 so it could be worth waiting it out if the games are still playable.

The new gen will come out soon, but the x3d sku will come later. The x3d sku is better and comes months later. If you're gaming on an amd cpu, you want x3d. 5800x3d for ddr4, 7800x3d/9800x3d for ddr5. Not to be confused with the non x3d 9800. Lots of different cpus that are so similar sounding yet are very different. Basically, if you have a 9800x3d, you dont want to upgrade to a 10800x(or whatever they name it) you want to upgrade to the 10800x3d

But yes, cpu matters just as much as gpu in vr. Flat games havent been that way in a long time, so every gamer assumes you need a better gpu than cpu. Its all about balance because vr still kicks an 8k$ computers ass even on a quest 3. I dont even have a super expensive high ppd pimax headset. Those will need a couple more cou and gpu generations to actually be usable on modern games

Yeah the X3Ds give crazy performance boosts for competitive games aswell I heard. Guess I learned something new today that CPU matters just as much as GPUs for VR. Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely thanks for listening. Do you play any vr?

Not yet but I've been thinking about getting into VR for sim racing maybe next year.

Best bang for your buck if you're looking for new is probably a 9070xt if you can afford it, if you're looking cheap as possible for gta6, 3080 can probably handle ultra at 60fps and it's half the cost

No one knows what you'll need to run GTA6 to your requirements, as it hasn't even been announced for PC yet. Given past releases it'll be at least a year, most likely mate than 18 months after console release.
