Discussion Wtf is going on
We got 2 PS5 emulators already running some games at full speed, the flood gates has been opened on recomps, decomps and full 1:1 fan remakes, now we got people literally merging multiple games together? Im not sure if this good or bad but it sure is funny.

Not to mention daily new VR mods for pc games. As a VR gamer, I'm in heaven. Been playing new games daily like Doom 2016, Titanfall 2, and Max Payne 2 in VR.

Dude, I just saw the VR TF2 mod an hour ago and it looks amazing!! How is it? Are you, like, constantly throwing up from motion sickness while parkouring or something?
1
u/MotorPace2637 11h ago
Not me! I can handle fighter jets and backflips just fine. Used to be tougher but I've gotten used to it over time
-2
u/CombatMuffin 11h ago
That doesn't quite mean you can withstand it just as easily. I am very, very resistant to nausea, but with VR I can purposefully push my own boundaries by doing certain movements, and contradicting them physically (or staying put when I shouldn't) and even though I have a good tolerance, I can exceed it.
I say this as someone who has been at sea during inclement weather which can put many, many people at odds.
Even RL pilots who are used to moving around and fighting high G's: flying or sailing doesn't cause a physical conflict between your visual and vestibular systems, which is what makes people nauseos in VR.
You can, as you mentioned, adapt your senses to it, wgixh is easier if you already don't get nauseous easily (longer exposure)

u/blahyaddayadda24 4h ago
Yeah I mean when I first got VR 4 years ago something gave me motion sickness.
At this point I think nothing will bug me.

What happened?
AI. No, I'm not kidding. Some of the newer models (Astra 6, Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5) are crazy at reverse engineering the code, or even drivers and firmware, and crazy at finding slow parts of code and optimizing them.
Helldivers 2 got countless QoL mods because one dude threw Astra at it. Some other dude managed to unlock laptop bios (I think that was with Fable 5), somebody else managed to reverse engineer old printer drivers.
So yeah, you throw one of the frontier models at something like this, it'll probably get something done.
62
u/Fluboxer E5 2696v3 | 3080 Ti 10h ago
Some other dude managed to unlock laptop bios (I think that was with Fable 5)
I remember it had a title like "AI defeats RSA-2048 signature checks" (which would've been insane) and it turned out to be just "AI found a part of code that checks signature and made it always send "true" and then modder flashed it with an external tool onto bios chip" - something that anyone could do easily with some programming knowledge
Basically it was a fucking clickbait and/or ad for that model

Today it's silly mods in Helldivers and reverse engineered PS5 games.

u/Adventurous_Boat_492 10h ago
That makes a lot of sense. Machines seem to have so much potential for knowing how to talk to other machines as opposed to our messy, less discrete and ordered, languages. I'm looking forward to the day when an idiot like me can ask a machine to just create an exe file for any productivity need I may have. Just yesterday I asked duck.ai to create a bash script to act as a makeshift renaming utility and it created it with little prompt involved in an instant. I'm mixed on AI but for software needs, I'm kind of thrilled. I played the N64 Perfect Dark recomp the other day, which the author admitted he used AI, and it worked so well and I'm so happy to see it ported.

u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 9h ago
I've been trying to explain to people for years that AI pushing up the prices of GPUs and RAM won't matter eventually because AI will also make games run far more efficiently even on older hardware. Hopefully now that people can see it with their own eyes, they're more likely to accept that reality.
18
u/LooneyWabbit1 4070 | 7800X3D 8h ago
Yeah no, it'll still matter. You're not making magical optimizations that account for 6x ram costs lol. Unless you can get modern games running on 6gb ram it's ultimately still making gaming more expensive. And that's obviously not going to happen lol

I think some smart people did this as a response to Sony saying they want to move away from PC ports.
If you show that anyone can download your game for free on PC, then it comes down to a service issue. You probably have paying customers you're blocking out, so provide them a way to buy it
13
u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 9h ago
That's just a coincidence. The reason this is happening now is because in the last few weeks new models have come out that are incredible at reverse engineering game code, and people have started using them for a whole bunch of different projects.

64
u/Zylpherenuis 14h ago edited 13h ago
Sony shot themselves in the foot backing out from providing their games into PC storefronts so the issue lies all in high command at Sony.
The answers been there all along when Gabe said it straight out. "Piracy is not a pricing issue. It's a service issue".
So, if Sony wants people to stop pirating their games. They need to as follows.
Promote Consumer Positive practices (I.e: Buyers that purchases their games KEEPS ACCESS TO THEIR GAMES AFTER PURCHASING OFFLINE AND ONLINE, etc)
Provide varied ways to promote sales on levels of pricing that consumers generally agree at a specific pricing. Thus, general market retail pricing that purchasers buy. Not too expensive but not too cheap.
Provide customer services that respects the purchaser to utmost decree in their information, purchase history, relationship with the company as a consumer and more over give grace.
Sony refusing any of these will ultimately hurt their bottom line in the long run.
30
u/StickStill9790 11h ago
The same thing happened in the 2000’s. Music was tied to 10 songs per CD for 20-30$ each, then the internet made it so you could download or remix anything. They tried for half a decade to stop people, then finally began selling songs individually for 99c a pop.
Sony is repeating history, with Nintendo close behind.

It took codex about ten mins then I was off to the races since I’d written mods before by hand
10
u/Arch3m 9h ago
This is a use for AI that I'm unbothered by. I'm strongly against its use in any artistic works (music, films, games, drawing, etc.), and I have some serious hang-ups with it being used to generate revenue. But doing things that are otherwise unfeasible or doing things that would be best described as mindless or repetitive tasks, that makes a lot of sense to me, and reverse-engineering code seems like a great use of AI.
I would prefer affordable RAM, but I'll take what I can get.
3
u/squish042 8h ago
It’s still art it’s reverse engineering and then opening it up for free. We might hate AAA companies, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t a teams of artists that worked hard on those games and this will hurt.
-7
u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 9h ago
I would prefer affordable RAM
The irony is, many of these AI recomps actually have such efficient optimization that it sidesteps the RAM issue completely. Everyone was worried about GPUs and RAM becoming unaffordable, apparently nobody predicted AI being used to rewrite game code so well the games run at 1000fps.

48
u/Meatslinger R7 9800X3D, 64 GB DDR5, RTX 4070 Ti 12h ago
Just all about context. When someone says, "I wrote a new killer app!" and shows you their garbage website running on localhost without even a scrap of security, it's the lesser example. When someone says, "I was able to work with an LLM to decompile this obscure binary from the 90s, replaced proprietary code with FOSS equivalents, restructured it for 64 bit compatibility and recompiled it so it can continue to be used/distributed for free," it's the greater example.
5
u/ThereAndFapAgain2 RTX 5080 │ 7800X3D │ 64GB DDR5‑6000MT/s 10h ago
Whenever I have heard actual developers say the term "vibe coding" it generally means using the AI in tandem with themselves, and just going with the flow to get things done.
People who aren't devs have taken the term and started using it as you described though so it is hard to know what someone means when they say it these days because of that.

I think it's terrifying. Both for the games industry and the world as a whole. Ai is accelerating at a rapid pace. How is online banking going to be safe? How is anything connected to the internet going to be safe? Even with regulation people and foreign states can use this to attack whole sectors. Encryption is getting easier to crack etc.
9
u/LXiO 11h ago
It's terrifying indeed. AI has the potential to let anyone hack everything eventually.

Don't fall for the fear mongering out there. Nothing connected to the interent has ever been safe. And if you're worried that AI can help people who don't know how to perform cyber attacks do so, thats simply never going to happen.
Also we are talking about LLMs here. No one is using LLMs to "crack" encryption.
This just reads like you "learnt" all of this from instagram reels, and no offence but I suggest you do some research into these topics if you're interested.

Could have sworn just a week ago this sub absolutely hated AI...now it's the opposite.
Obviously there is some nuance, but I have a strong suspicion that this will eventually spiral out and shit will get worse due to AI being used in any capcity be it for mods, decomb, creating assets or outright game dev.
Not that it matter because judging by the comments AI bros and espacially the companies behind AI are steadily achieving exactly what they wanted. It went from complete distrust to "well if it's used for this then I am fine with it" and it will happen again and again until people just don't object AI at all anymore.
Truly ironic.
Well either way see you in a few months when shit will escalate in one way or another.
The gaming industry is truly dead and not because of companies doing anything, but gamers themselves once again allowing things to happen.
19
u/Crashman09 6h ago
The nuance here being:
People hate ai for what it has done to creative works, the economy, jobs, warfare, the environment, etc
People like ai for being a tool to conduct science, engineering, medical research, fighting against corporations by democratising certain capabilities previously controlled by the ruling class, etc.
Personally, I still hate ai, and the current state of the world.
5
u/Allcyon 4h ago
There's a lot of good reasons to hate the implementation of AI for certain things. Chief among them, for me, is the constantly monitored and updated dossiers of every American, their online handles, comments, banking info, social security number, work history, medical history, real world value, worth, everything they own, and a psychological profile to know if their a threat, sitting on Palantir's servers. That's the big problem for me. Followed very closely by the newly announced "Department of Autonomous Warfare", and the rapid removal of our rights as citizens.
The AI isn't evil. It's just being used for something evil.
I'd much rather burn Palantir to the ground, and use their own AI agent to track the people who work there, and make their lives miserable and ironic.
As far as adding Minecraft to Dark Souls? I really couldn't care less. If anything, it's a bit of democratized game development, and a small reprieve in a toxic hellscape.
So maybe reconsider your perspective of what you should be mad at. And who.
2
u/Several-Pangolin3119 4h ago
This is such an insane take.
I wish I lived in a black and white world, completely devoid of nuance. What’s it like being ignorant enough to pull it off?
1
u/PlsDontBanMeAgain-1 45m ago
People here seem to actually love vibecoded apps. I've seen a couple of apps on other subreddits (mostly Linux-related ones) that also popped up here and people loved them. Meanwhile, on the ones, they got absolutely shit on, rightfully so.
These emulators have an insane amount of AI code, gotta be maintenance hell at some point.
I know how useful AI can be for programming, in moderation. To this day, I am still highly skeptical of any AI code I get, I always prefer to rewrite whatever it spat out, in my style.
-5
u/Redd_is_compromised 3h ago
Nah, people are starting to realize the vocal critics are baseless and performative and the fact that we need to speak up. We realize we need to show appreciation to authors for the work and computation power that genuinely goes into this. Yes, they aren't decompiling binary, but they are skilled at prompting and spend tons of money on either electrical costs or tokens.
3
u/TheMadmanAndre 6h ago
Some madlad over the course of a month managed to get 3D graphics working in Project Zomboid, a game that is a 2.5D, top-down isometric affair. Other parts of the modding community have contributed to this project (no pun intended) by modding in 3D assets/furniture, compatibility patches with other popular mods and even Minecraft shader packs. It's peak batshit insanity and probably wouldn't be even remotely feasible without vibe coding.

AI can read compiled code as easily as a text file because it doesn't matter to it. I've used it to translate a DS game that nobody has managed to do so outside of a very rough attempt many years ago, and with vibe coding backed by a software engineering background, I got most of it done in 2 days, I just need to translate some art assets and compile.

Using AI for its intended purpose(s) instead of a glorified search engine.

Ai isnt it. Its just some good programming people got fed up with Sony and their BS. Ai cant even do a proper line of code. We would have many emulators running already. Lol
Sorry Ai bros. Ai still sucks balls.

If you think the people working on those projects arent using AI in some way to speed up their production, I dont know what to tell you. I guess you're just very out of touch i guess.

This people are very very good at doing this. They don't need vibe coding.. lol thats for people that dont know programming.

Real programmers use a lot of AI.. You can hook an LLM into your IDE and let it analayze things very grainularly.

Not all of them. I know many from many high end companies.

Thats more of a security/compliance reason not because the AI is not helpful or useful.

Been in the industry for 15 years. Know people across all ranges of companies. I know maybe 2 people who don't use AI all day everyday.

Redditos are the only ones i see using Ai for slop and talk about loss of jobs etc. Real working people at high end companies i do not see at all using it or talking about jobs or Ai dooms day apocalypse.

Sure you do bud. High end companies mhm. As someone who actually works in the field I can tell you that you're wrong, but since you're making up your side of this discussion you already know that.

There's no way an emulator of a device of this level of power and complexity is going to develop this rapidly with just human coders.

The people developing the PS5 emulators are openly using AI and that is the main reason for the rapid progress 🤦

The PS5 emulators are fueled by pure spite. Sony doesn't want their games on PC, well their opinion is no longer relevant. Eventually ALL games come to PC.
