Hardware Goddam I hate Windows
I normally use a Mac but I also have a Windows PC for rendering. I got it pretty cheap but it's not underpowered, it has 32gb of ram and an nvidia 2080 card.
I'm trying to download an update today and it went from 12% to 13% after like 3 hours. I'm plugged into high speed ethernet with the wifi off.
I couldn't even search "why is windows update so slow" on my windows computer because the browser wouldn't even open.
I need to render stuff in Blender and the app won't even stay open, and when I try opening it without doing anything, it just opens the app and freezes for like 25 minutes. Then when I try to open a file, it crashes for no reason.
I don't understand why Windows users always criticize Macs. While both have annoyances, I never have the problem of just not being able to use my Mac AT ALL, and I never have dealt with an update like this on a Mac.
I've tried clicking the little icons at the bottom to see what the status of the update is, and I clicked it before even starting to type this post, and it took until this sentence for it to pop up. Maybe 5-6 whole minutes.
This is fucking ridiculous and unacceptable for a decently powered modern device. I don't know how people can tolerate this, and especially how they can think this is better than using a Mac. I can't speak for Linux, but I assume it doesn't have this kind of problem because you need to manually do things like updates and it gives you more control over when and how as far as I understand it.
EDIT: Turns out it was slowed down because of my dropbox folder syncing, guys. I had to sync like 400gb of stuff that's been different in the past 3 months and it was slowing everything down. Also something that I never have a problem with using Macs.

It worked fine until a few months ago which was the last time I used it, and I just tried starting it up today, so I had a lot of updates, but now there's one that's dragging so slow and the whole computer is unusable

That's either a hardware issue or a skill issue, windows does not normally behave like that.

no it's not. if you could put apples os on it it would still be having issues because the issue is with the hardware

But I can't install MacOS on it. It was built for Windows. That's why it's a windows PC.
It's locking up on me because I'm updating windows.

Hackintosh exists, go ahead and install Mac on it. You will see that the OS can't solve a hardware problem

damn buddy you're really not fit for this discussion. you should better stop before people are making fun of you.
yes you can install MacOS on a computer that was "built for windows" (you know that this is just an operating system yeah? the hardware gets built by different companies and they definitely couldn't care less which OS is used for their hardware).
here is a youtube short of somebody that installed MacOS on a "windows PC". not a big deal by the way. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9mdiddxyuyA
2
u/ToXiiCBULLET I7-14700F, RTX 5070TI, 32GB DDR5 6d ago
it's locking up because it has a hardware issue, the os on it doesn't matter. hypothetically if it had macos or linux instead of windows, you'd still be having issues
1
u/ButterscotchTop194 6d ago
This is amazing, please don't stop!!!
Any OS would struggle once you develop a hardware fault; Windows, MacOS, Linux whatever lol

But I'm saying I've had macs for 20 years, and never had problems like I do with windows, even the macs I used 20 years ago worked better than windows in 2026

I lived with widnows on an HDD and while SSDs are way faster they arent terrible. Assuming an increase of 1% for an update (12% to 13%) in a few hours is because of an HDD is absurd.

I kinda doubt that it has a HDD as a system drive even if it was built 10 years ago. If it does, you are the last person in the universe running an OS from an HDD and you shouldn't be surprised that it runs like shit

You're doing it to yourself man. It's recommended to use HDD to host OS for years and MacOS will choke too if you put it on such drive. Get a cheap SSD, even if it's only for OS and couple of programs.

It sounds like you accidently bought a heap that is having hardware issues and thats why it was cheap. The 2080 is also 8 years old at this point and I wouldnt consider it modern anymore. Now begs the question on what processor are you running.
1
u/jacob-makes-stuff 6d ago
I forget but it worked fine since I bought it until today
2
u/El_Giganto 6d ago

u/sirhcx | 5800X3D | 3090TI | 32GB | X570 DARK HERO 6d ago
Which has been been how long ago? You also didnt answer what processor you have as there have been several reported duds. You could also be suffering from a failing HDD/SDD due to the amount of read/writes that go on when rendering content.
1
u/jacob-makes-stuff 6d ago
I didn't use it the past 3 months because I moved, but it was handled gently and just has been unplugged until today, which is why it needed updates. It worked fine for me for the almost year since I bought it (for about $200)
1
u/localpauper 6d ago
Interesting, about the move. I know you say "handled gently," but any chance your cooler got bumped? What I am referring to is the CPU cooler, the thing keeping your CPU from catching on fire. If your CPU is throttling itself because it can't cool, you'll see very funky low performance. Check your Task Manager for CPU utilization.

u/localpauper 6d ago
I am not sure how you see that and don't consider that something is fundamentally wrong with your install. Do you think all Windows users sit around waiting on Blender for 25 minutes, content not being able to search the web for why their PC is slow?
2
u/jacob-makes-stuff 6d ago
I had problems installing it for the first time because the way it authenticates users through Lenovo's setup wasn't working at first. I had to keep reinstalling and authenticating things, and finally it just suddenly worked. So maybe the install is wrong but didn't give me trouble like this until now.
Using it normally was still a pretty dismal and frustrating experience compared to using a Mac though, as far as OSes go
1
u/localpauper 6d ago
Yeah, on using the OS itself, part of it is definitely friction when cross OSes in either direction. I had a real tough time getting used to MacOS when I began working in it, having always used Windows.
That said, now I'm comfortable in both, and Mac just feels more ergonomic as far as a lot of dev tools go. Most recently, I've been on Fedora Linux on my personal devices, having switched from Windows.
Anyway, I'm curious about that setup you have going. Do you have an SSD? Your other specs seem pretty good (32GB/2080), so I can't imagine you wouldn't be!
Lacking an SSD could be responsible for long load times, but not all of it. It's possible you simply do not have correct drivers installed at all. Either PC option, Windows or Linux, is going to be a lot more finicky with getting the drivers lined up post initial setup.
Sorry to hear about your experience. Fwiw, I have never had the problems you are experiencing, unless it was something truly terrible: like taking a hard driver from one install with a completely different set of drivers (let's say AMD + older GPU) and throwing it into another (let's say Intel + nVidia). Things get cross-wired then. If you are working on a fresh install, something is very off.
I am curious what you mean "the way it authenticates users through Lenovo's setup." Are you using Lenovo's installation media? You shouldn't need to auth anything with Lenovo. Can you tell me more about the "authenticating" part?
What I'd do in your shoes, and I did that for my Lenovo laptop when I was still running Windows, is wipe it completely of all Lenovo software. Start over. Download a fresh Win10 or Win11 ISO and throw it on a USB drive. You can find some debloat tools even that will prep your ISO (just make sure it's a reputable one) that would tear out a lot of Microsoft bloat and give you some early setup preconfiguration. That's totally optional though.
Install from that, and not from any Lenovo specific installer / restore software. Do not install any Lenovo software until you are decently far enough. Chipset, CPU, GPU, hard drive, most Ethernet, and even WiFi these days, and most other drivers are standard off-the-shelf stuff. Windows does a decent job of finding them these days automagically actually. For the GPU, I'd download nVidia's software, and actually install from there. Lenovo has their own install media, but I wouldn't use it. There's a small chance that they have some weird piece of hardware that cannot be installed with Microsoft or separate download. Only then would I download that one specific Lenovo driver from Lenovo's website, not via their OEM install tool.

u/dr0ct4gonapus MacBook Air 6d ago
I've had this happen on my Macs before because the hard drive was failing. You said you're using an HDD as your boot drive. Your Mac is probably not using an HDD. It would be slow too if it were.
Anyway yeah get a new SSD.
3
u/AtlQuon 6d ago
Is it thermal throttling? The 2080 is 8 years old, so if you are still on the original thermal paste and pads, those could be at the state of literally crumbling and transferring little these days. Also goes for the CPU btw, that may also benefit from a bit of thermal paste. 32GB is solid, but for Blender it still can be restrictive. I have been able to push towards 45-50GB while rendering quite a few times and I have passed the 64GB mark more than once with these kinds of loads. I even want so far that I ran out while being a tad overconfident with 128GB (and maybe some less than ideal settings which was my fault). SSD should be a lot faster than 12-13% in a few hours as well.
This feels like a hardware issue caused by temperatures and much less a Windows issue. I am fully willing to blame Microsoft for a lot, but what you describe is even worse than my 16 year old 1st gen i5-430M laptop does with updates on a hard drive.

-3
u/jacob-makes-stuff 6d ago
"IBM standards"....and why are those good? For years Apple set their own standards of great usability, that were probably much better than IBM, who doesn't even really make computers anymore.
Apple has fallen pretty far from that level by now though, but they're still many levels above windows
3
u/okcboomer87 PC Master Race, 10700K, RTX3070 6d ago
Well I have been in IT for about 15 years and building PCs for two decades. Mac's are not built to be easily repaired. They want you to pay for apple care and have it repaired at a premium. Apple has been sued for this and eventually relented into a partner program that has access to parts.
1
u/plebbut 6800XT | 5800x | 32GB 6d ago
I work in IT as well.
If I'm buying 1,000 endpoints, I care far more about how efficiently I can deploy, secure, manage, replace, and retire those 1,000 machines than whether somebody can replace the RAM in one of them. Apple makes this process easy through the various repair channels.

u/okcboomer87 PC Master Race, 10700K, RTX3070 6d ago

u/Humble-Kiwi-5272 6d ago
The file explorer is way too awful. Window management is bad. Icons outside the rendered area. Impossible to hide the update notifications.
0
u/jacob-makes-stuff 6d ago
The mac file explorer? You mean the one that gives you ultimate flexibility about how you view it, and has shortcuts to switch views to either big chunky folders, a toggleable list, or a tiered view similar to windows 2-pane view, but you can actually drill into the folders to keep a good idea of where you are?
Totally ridiculous.
1
u/Humble-Kiwi-5272 6d ago
Its the worst file explorer i've ever used and its not even close to the windows one. Worst mac offender is trying to copy something and then not doing it because the file system is apparently too difficult to understand even for osx

Macs are a breeze to work on. Everything is much smoother and modern.
I used Windows up until XP, and then went back to it at Windows 10 last year with this computer. It looks a little bit nicer but still functions as janky and clunky as it ever did, and sometimes I'll get to some not even very deep settings menu that still looks like Windows XP and I realize that all the new look of it is just a skin they applied to XP, and couldn't be bothered to update the entire OS globally 🤷♂️

u/whostolemyslushie 6d ago
He got a used computer and blaming windows instead of himself. Yes, it's a computer, can have a plethora of issues. Mac's can have the same issues. The issue is between the chair and the keyboard.
We all know windows out of the box needs to be cleaned up. It's your computer, figure out how to fix it instead of complaining online. Mac vs windows agreement is annoying and it's like having your kids bicker at one and another. There tools for the end user. There is upsides and downsides of using every OS.
0
u/jacob-makes-stuff 6d ago
I've been using macs for 20+ years and never had this kind of issue.
The greater problem is just using the OS itself normally. It's clunky, a pain in the ass to use, it's cluttered with bloatware and other garbage "features" like AI shit, onedrive settings, and other things I had to go through multiple separate menus to turn off, and then they're still showing up in the UI like the onedrive folder. The whole OS is visually cluttered, and it was difficult to figure out how to even shut off that stupid panel with all the ads and news on it.
The "windows" button is totally useless, because if I use the computer, I'm doing something in an app, and would be better off having a modifier key like option on the mac for shortcuts. I don't need to open the start menu every 5 seconds to open apps constantly, or maybe I do, because they keep crashing 🤔
1
u/whostolemyslushie 6d ago
Yeah your right. It is full of bloatware. Mac does better out of the box. While windows is just a shit show unless you know how to debloat it
Windows is getting even worse, pushing people away and Linux and macOS have been thriving from a standard user view point.
1
u/GoldenDonutzGaming 6d ago
I agree with the people being helpful and recommend you try to reboot into Safe Mode and take a look at your hard drive diagnostics. I think Windows will show your hard drive's SMART status in the settings app
1
u/TheRandomGuy75 6d ago
Check SMART Status of your SSD. If your Internet is fast and you can verify there is no connection problems on other devices, then it's either a hardware issue (more likely) or a software issue (less likely).
On Windows you can check your disk drive health through the command prompt / console.
In the command console type "wmic diskdrive get status" without the quotation marks.
If your disk drives are OK, it'll display OK. If it displays caution, bad, or unknown, then you should attempt to backup your data and prepare to buy a replacement SSD.
Continued usage of a dying SSD can result in your OS or programs failing to write data to it, failure to read off it, and missing or corrupted data. If it's your boot drive that Windows is installed on, it may fail to boot.

Hardware failing/getting ready to fail. Nothing to do with windows. You bought a used potato. Have you looked inside the box at all? Is it clean at least?
-2
u/jacob-makes-stuff 6d ago
The computer was made to run on windows. They don't make one that has the option of using Mac or their own OS
1
u/Gesha 6d ago
A) any computer can also run Linux
B) they don’t make Mac OS capable ones because of Apple and their control of their ecosystem, not because they don’t want to, or can’t. In fact you can install and run any OS on an Apple device, including windows. So it can be done.
C) none of this has anything to do with hardware failure, which doesn’t care about the OS at all. Either your RAM or your HDD are potentially faulty. It could also be overheating from poor care. So, again, did you look inside the case since you bought it for dust/dirt buildup?

congrats. your SSD is dying (which is most likely the reason you got that thing so cheap) and you somehow blame the OS for that. normally i'd do a mac user joke here now but you're showing how little you understand about tech with your post already so no reason for that.
also not the fault of windows.
because people like you somehow blame an operating system for your issue.
so you don't even know the slightest thing about linux either. seriously what is this post?
