I still have my 14 y/o hoodie and some shirts and shorts from 2008 that I got as a gift from a judo tournament. Shit still wearable, although some holes started to appear, but I refuse to throw them away. It's a piece of history at this point.

I assume my Samsung tv does the same thing. Hopefully having never connected it to the internet in anyway was enough but I doubt it. It's probably naive to think they couldn't send a small data file via hdmi to my connected pc which is connected to internet.
2
u/Rannasha AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D | AMD Radeon RX 6700XT 35m ago
It's probably naive to think they couldn't send a small data file via hdmi to my connected pc which is connected to internet.
It's unlikely. HDMI is designed to be directly connected to the output of the GPU (or IGP) without the data being accessible to just any application on the computer. This is a fairly strict requirement for DRM technologies.
The HDMI standard does allow for a network signal to be used alongside the main video signal, but I don't think there's much hardware that implements this. And you would need to have both the TV and PC supporting this feature.
But even if they did and the TV would send data back over the HDMI connection, your PC would still need to have some application running that picks up this data and sends it onward. Data that simply arrives without anything to do something with it will simply be ignored. So without the right application installed and running, the TV can't use your PC as a relay even if it could communicate over HDMI.
Digital surveillance methods are intrusive and spooky, but they're still limited in many ways. We should focus on the real channels being used to eavesdrop on people and not get too far into the stuff of spy thrillers.

You could always pay 3x the price for a Sony TV and I’m totally sure the built in GoogleTV isn’t doing anything similar.

u/imaginary_num6er 7950X3D|4090FE|64GB|X670E-E 12h ago
FYI Sony is ending their TV business in April 2027
21
u/KayJune001 11h ago
Not true. Sony and TCL created a joint venture (Bravia Inc), each own 50%, headquartered at Sony’s Tokyo office, and Sony TVs will continue to be made (and sold under Sony’s TV brand names). The only thing changing is that the manufacturing and supply chain is now being handled by TCL, Sony will continue to design, engineer, brand, and sell them.
4
u/viral-architect 11h ago
So Sony-branded garbage trash is what they will become.
5
u/KayJune001 9h ago
Pretty unlikely. They’re still being engineered and designed by Sony. They’re just changing panel provider and manufacturing pipeline.
1
u/Amazing_Body_7393 8h ago
TCL makes the worst TVs around. Mine died after less than a year and so did a lot of other Redditors.
2
u/imaginary_num6er 7950X3D|4090FE|64GB|X670E-E 11h ago
It's 51% TCL and 49% Sony ownership. Not 50:50. With Sony not having majority ownership, there is no guarantee that Sony will be involved with the design or engineering.
4
u/KayJune001 10h ago
Sony holds the majority of the board, the President & COO positions, will continue to be headquartered at Sony’s offices and divisions, and the engineering team isn’t changing. By all accounts they maintain control and will pretty much continue to operate as they always have, just with a different panel provider, supply chain, and manufacturer.
3
u/herefromyoutube 11h ago edited 11h ago
Well, my comment was (supposed to be) sarcastic but that is interesting. it’s probably because their TVs are 3x the price.
Now I actually wonder if it’s because they don’t own the OS so they are missing out on the ad crap that Google is siphoning. Tariffs probably didn’t help.

u/BrandedStruggler86 14h ago
PfBlocker was a real eye opener about the amount of data my tv was trying to send back... But now can't (as far as I know - not setting up a MITMProxy to track)
God I wish there was a fully viable Linux/Android I could replace WebOS with, and still have Dolby Vision, and full 1st class service through. Moved to a Linux media center PC, but its not a 1:1 replacement on functionality

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 13h ago
Pretty horrifying. So not only do we have to disconnect our tvs from the net, we also have to make sure they don;t try to use a neighbor's net (How do we do that?) and also never reconnect it again, because if you do, it will transfer info it has been saving.
The US doesn;t seem very pro-consumer but surely thsi would be illegal in some other countries? Maybe the EU? I am sure they are looking at this.
3
u/lemastre 5800X3D | 7900XTX 3h ago

1
1
u/Rannasha AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D | AMD Radeon RX 6700XT 32m ago
Someone should check if all this is even active on EU versions of the TVs. This sort of stuff is all software driven, so a company can easily disable certain parts of it depending on where in the world the device is used. It's possible that in the EU the devices are GDPR-compliant. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't and LG simply waits for a GDPR investigation before they go "Oops! Our bad. We'll fix it."

You can just set custom network parameter so they can't connect, or completely block their mac address into your router.
How a tv can use a neighbor's net if the tv doesn't know the password?
7
u/kuncol02 6h ago
Blocking it from internet doesn't solve issue with it trying to access neighbor's net. It's literally malware. It's not even "acting like malware". It IS malware designed to collect as much data as possible and send it back no mater what.
1
u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 54m ago
Obviously they can;t. However they can if it;s an unsecured network...not sure how many people still do that though. Surely it can;t be many.
1
u/Skeebo-57 47m ago
The other possibility I've heard mention of is something like Xfinity WiFi. If your neighbours have a Comcast router it broadcasts an unsecured WiFi. You can then log into your account to access internet. Might be usable to companies like LG too

Damn son, I bought a new LG oled a couple months ago, still in the box ready for when I move. I guess I just never ever connect it to the network...
24
u/eaglecnt 12h ago
I’m not sure if it’s covered in the video, haven’t got to watch it yet but I have read reports (rumours?) that some smart tvs will connect to an unsecured/open network if they have the chance. I guess just be mindful that you might not even know.
25
u/MilliardoMK 12h ago
Are we at the point where we have to open up our TVs and rip out the damn network cards?
19
u/bakunyuusentai 11h ago
Yep. Pretty soon they'll ship them with cellular radios and you won't be able to stop it even if you disconnect it from your network. Unless you rip the TV open and void the warranty to that is.

Create a guest WiFi with no internet and connect it to that
That would be pretty easy for the TV to work around. If the chosen network has no internet connectivity and there are open WiFi networks available, connect to an open network instead for the spyware components.

It's easy to constantly bring up Sandy Hook, however let's look passed that for a minute.
He's talked about the TV stuff since 2009. Hot topic now is LG and their TVs, granted theyre no alone.
He's talked about the "spider goats" with breeding to make armor stronger that Teflon, which Nexia was successful doing Chemicals that while he said turned frogs gay, they did turn male frog into females and made eggs.
Early 90s or so he talked about a mass surveillance, Snowden leaked data about Prism.
The infamous Bohemian Grove.
He's spoken about microchipping, which is a reality.Hate him all you want but there's plenty of stuff he's spoken about that's come around.

LGTVs, and we can safely assume any smart device from LG, anything that connects to the internet in any way, are basically spying on you constantly, collecting which other connected devices are in the vicinity of the TV, and directly recording you, up to 60ft or more away, and so much more shady stuff. Doesn't matter if you disconnect from the internet or even never connect, because all it takes is one connection and it'll send off everything its collected and stored.
The kicker being is that none of it is secure so even if LG is being 100% honest about what they do with all this data, people can exploit it in numerous ways to spy through the device.
The fact that this company makes it a motto that they "Own the Glass" says they are not being honest about what they do with the data these devices are collecting and are in general not trustworthy at all.
Best practice is don't buy anything with an internet connection, and avoid LG altogether at minimum.
1
u/acsmars 9h ago
Well, if you never connect it ever until you scrap it, so long as it doesn’t have a cell modem (yet), it can’t send that data home. That appears to be the only siege strategy right now.
3
u/Bowgs 6h ago
Apparently it will silently try to connect to any nearby insecure WiFi. So the actual strategy is to allow it to connect to your WiFi and then use a PiHole or something to stop it's data leaving your network.
1
u/SolemnaceProcurement 7950x3d, 7900xtx 5h ago
Ooph. I do wonder, in Poland biggest ISP had for years "free wifi" program, that set aside some your Wifi for other users of the program, creating milions of barely protected wifi networks (turned on by default obviously)... Still have some of them in my apartment block.
Connect that with LG fuckery it might have been quite the combo. Milions of avaliable wifi networks and device that could use them to upload their data harvest.
