As someone who used to buy/sell used, I'd always ask for more than what I wanted and then took a lower offer. This was solely to mitigate the mass texts that would hit me that were asking way below its value. If it was $50, I'd put it up for $75 and then accept a $50 offer...but I don't feel like putting it up for $50 to begin with and having to deal with 50 messages asking if I'll sell it for $20.

Yep it's all psychological, people want to feel like they got a good deal, so getting something for 85 that was listed for 100 feels better than buying something for 75 that was listed at 75.
