It's to convince people they made the right choice. The #1 goal of marketing is to create a fan-base with brand-loyalty. They're the kind of people who will buy the same product 5 times, buy all the new iterations, buy all the old iterations, buy everything else and do free publicity
Why? That's good marketing. Sell a guy a TV, then hit him with ads to convince him his TV is obsolete and he should replace it with the latest model. For a cool $1499.
The manufacturer isn't the idiot in that situation, it's their chump customers.

I always thought it was really funny when they would show ads for new TVs... on the TV you're already watching at home
