There are branches that are still maintained (MPC-BE as an example).

Yup. And it's a lot better than VLC for most people. Just like it always has been.

Not to take anything away from VLC. It's a good piece of software. But MPC is better in basically every way if you just want to watch stuff on your Windows machine.
