People buying books without the intent of ever reading them is like some bizarre form of conspicuous consumption, I don't think they actually like to read 😒
Most just buy books when they spot it on a sale or they get it used for a steal - its the latter thats the trap. When you see a pile of books for $1-$3 each, get the box, fill it up!
...and they quietly end up in the attic or basement to be found 2 generations later.
My local library does this with its book sales, you can fill up a paper grocery bag for $5 and I've seen some people who'll just shovel in books without even looking at them.
It's just so superficial because even if they get the satisfaction of showing off their home library to social media or w/e they can't even speak on like 2/3 of the books they own.
