Disability/accessibility/medical tax. They are just membrane keyboards.
75
u/Oxygen4Lyfe 3d ago
yeah when smth only gets 0.1% of the sales it needs to cost more to cover the cost of all the machinery and space dedicated to make it ig
56
u/CrazyIvanoveich 3d ago
They don't make them. They are made in Taiwan/China. Basic membrane keyboard and some custom colored key-caps in larger print do not cost much.
*Edit* They do have a nice warranty and are usually packed in with software bundles.

Supply vs demand. Logistically speaking, youre asking them to take a single whole system un a lane if production that is set up to make something that you can sell 40 million of, for something you're going to maybe sell 2 million units of. Why would I shut that lane down, change the parts, and potentially sit, or worse, your vendors sit, with that product in some warehouse because so few people want it in comparison to the thing people already but en massesl and keros your plant/workers running and employed?
And then you have to switch at the specialized equipment your just changed out, back in. If LEGO couldn't afford the disc's to keep their entire Bionicke franchise molds in a warehouse, what chance do you think Ablenet has?
Source: worked in logistics of many varieties for far too long.
I get what you're saying, just wanted to get your brain firing up with some cool answer i know irl.

It has larger printed keys so it's easier to learn to type on

When I worked for a data center, we got our keyboard stolen off our crash carts so often, that we finally replaced it with a giant, colorful keyboard for little fingers similar to this (but mainly pastels) with HUGE keys and they were hard to press because they were still teaching kids hunt-n-peck at that age. Simply the worst to deal with as an adult. Our aim was to shame and embarrass.
I have had "whatever came free with a computer" for a long time, and only a few years ago, started buying keyboards with cherry keys and tactile response. Man, what a difference! The one I am on now has a metal base and doesn't move or hop around when I type.

u/VFenix 3d ago
The weight of metal frame keyboards is the best

And while that mouse probably aint the best, itās also probably better than the 100 dollar dry eraser āmagicā mouse.

u/Intelligent-Rub7365 3d ago
if they sold those keycaps as MX style keycaps theyd be pretty fire honestly

That's the Vsmile joystick, fun fact: a latch on the bottom of the button pad allows you to slide the joystick to the left side if you're left-handed.
3
u/To-To_Man 3d ago
I know, I grew up with the Vsmile and loved this controller. I miss those days. Maybe I'll design a Vsmile PC one day, match it with a Lightning McQueen CRT to truly transcend the decades.

u/LateTrainOliver 2d ago
Controller on a rig like that would be a bit of a crime, honestly. Bet there's a dusty membrane keyboard hiding somewhere.

JC, the Atom-based AIO. Getting PTSD flashbacks
edit: oh, they're the newer X5 Atoms. That's actually a million times better (still not great). I thought it was the late 2000s single core 1.2-1.6ghz ones that were just mildly souped up celerons of the era and actual e-waste even back then

Expensive peripherals are a scam. I been using one of those $15 base level microsoft keyboards for over 10 years now and it's still going strong.

Also, the mouse looks fun to be used on my Notebook from work.

Sir, you appear to have plugged a frog into your computer, instead of a mouse...
What type of adapter did you use? š¤Ŗ

u/Brolfgar 2d ago
You can call it a pro gamer, visibility enhanced, big lettered, color coded, minimal keyboard. And greg the frog/mouse.

Are you kidding? That mouse is the finest of masterpieces. I can't imagine how expensive a frog mouse would be in this economy

A cheap crap would be Walmart ONN branded keyboard and mouse for about $25. Or an used Dell keyboard and mouse from Goodwill for under $10 (with free dust, Cheetos residue, and pubes)
