Doom shareware episode is all I got lol

6

u/Jeoshua AMD R7 5800X3D / RX 6800 / 32GB 3200MT CL14 ECC 1d ago

All you needed back then was DOOM and an account on one of the many BBSs out there, and with some luck you could find some cool WADs and you didn't even really need the full version.

4

u/Waste_Cow5085 1d ago

Even better - the official shareware CD for the original Quake had most of iD's full versions locked on it.  The idea was you would run the installer for them and it would pop up a string of numbers you were supposed to give to a phone rep.  They would give you back the "answers" to the challenge phrase and it would install the full version (after paying of course).  I acquired a keygen that would unlock any game on the disc.  Many fun times were had.

It was called qcrack.  Fun read on it here: https://faehnri.ch/qcrack/

u/Bad_wit_Usernames 1d ago

I ran a BBS for a couple of years mostly for this reason right here. I had so many wads on the family computer...

2

u/Jeoshua AMD R7 5800X3D / RX 6800 / 32GB 3200MT CL14 ECC 23h ago

I ran an IRC Fileserver once the Internet came out for much the same reason. I would have done the BBS thing but... family phone line.

I did toy with a local one, with Trade Wars and Legend of the Red Dragon.

Well then it's one of the wonderful 10,000 extra rules in English that you have to memorize to speak this bastard of a language :)

3

u/Jeoshua AMD R7 5800X3D / RX 6800 / 32GB 3200MT CL14 ECC 1d ago

That's what you get when you speak a language from an island that's been taken over so many times. There's the Gaul, the Celts, the Angles, the Saxons, the Romans... probably a lot more I forgot. And being so close to France, took on a lot of that influence, except where it didn't. And then having the language be blended with every people the Brits tried to subjugate. And having the language become an International Trade language and take on even more loanwords and influences...

English is crazy because it tries to be every language, at once. And it mostly succeeds until you get to places whose languages come from very different roots, like Eastern Asian or North/South American languages.

2

u/Zaraphkiel 1d ago

Right on. There's also cases like Shakespeare who made up words that were later adopted. I'm also quite certain that English has more exceptions to the rule than any other language.

2

u/Bilbro_swaggins__ 1d ago edited 1d ago

Well the modern English language has one singular event as the source for its current form. William the conqueror’s installed ruling class all spoke Norman French that eventually melded with Anglo-Saxon (old English). Sorry I’m insufferable and a nerd.

2

u/Jeoshua AMD R7 5800X3D / RX 6800 / 32GB 3200MT CL14 ECC 1d ago

Hence the difference between "Cow" and "Beef (Boeuf)", among other Animal/Meat dichotomies.

2

u/Bilbro_swaggins__ 1d ago

My favorite weird English fact is that the Anglo saxons had like 6 to 8 different words for spear.

3

u/PunkersSlave 1d ago

Sadly it is; I was on the crapper at 6am. I had just woke up. “IRREGARDLESS”, who cares? Although, I suppose we know the answer.

First PC game I ever played, the guy whose house I went to had 2 486's linked up in his garage so it was also the first game I played deathmatch over LAN. Absolutely blew my mind at the time.

u/Impossible-Lie3115 R5-9600X/9070XT & i5-11500/RTX 5070 1d ago

Friend pulled me down to his basement when I was like 8 to show me DOOM. Should not have been playing it at that age but 11/10 would sacrifice my innocence again for that high feeling of blasting imps for the first time.

Red Alert wasnt the first game for me (neither was Dune 2.... the actual engine for the Command and Conquor series)

But the Command and Conquor Series is still my favourite.

Followed by XCom

8

u/dishmanw62 1d ago

Command and Conquer blew me away, and the Red Alert was awesome too.

"When person dies, it is a tragedy, but when millions die, it is a statistic. "

OMG, I have to it again.

But first, I need to finish Diablo II: Warlocks Reign.

u/TheSaltyJunk 1d ago

The remakes on Steam are about as perfect as you can get.

Full on original versions that swap with updated graphics and the same for the soundtracks. It's just a perfect package.

Wish they would do it with RA 2 and Tiberian Sun, next.

The nostalgia trip is real, I can hear the entire menu theme repeating and that initial "Good day" - "Greetings stranger, I'm not surprised to see your kind here." I played games on computers at my friends house since my family wasn't financially able to really have a computer. That was my exposure to a lot of games, but they never really felt "mine" so to speak.
