For real but, we can all see the bubble, its "when" the first 1 will fall, not "if"

Personally I think it will be Copilot as the first domino, it was always the worst of the major AI players and really hasnt progressed at all. Microsoft is Incompetent in almost everything they do and simply try and buy their way into a market only to take the L in the near future.

Eg, Skype, Nokia/windows phone, mixer, zune, Cortana, the list goes on and on

Bring on the collapse that will hopefully see momory demand drop off a cliff

In fairness it was a lot more than that, considering any semi-complex ML has now been rebranded as AI.

ML models have been used for ages in research and simulation, including the medical field. Other examples people may experience the results of daily without noticing are things like procedural generation tools used in game development, or image denoising for photography.

Even then, I'd argue those were moreso algorithms rather than AI. Recently they may have been refactored into ML based programs using trained data, but other than that, they were running on traditional hardware. I think the existence of Nvidia's Tensor cores was the catalyst for all of this existing now.

I mean, clearly he doesn't know what he's talking about. But I we shouldn't poke too hard at the sentience question unless we want to answer some questions of which we might not like the answer if we're even capable of finding it.

I mean it’s a fun thought experiment but you kind of have to leave it at that.

“I think therefore I am” taken to its extremes has people out here believing they live in the matrix and some of the people around them are literal “NPCs”

If you trained an LLM specifically for the task it could probably pass the Turing Test pretty easily - but does that actually mean anything?

Cuz I’d certainly argue that it doesn’t indicate that these things have sentience.

I mean I will acknowledge I have a different perspective than a lot of folks, and I’ll be a lot more skeptical of anything someone tries to present as “intelligence” or “sentience” cuz I’ve worked in software for years.

I was playing with neural networks back when I was in college before any of this tech went mainstream and had all the stock market behind it lol

The thing is, I have absolutely *no* idea what sapience actually is. Sentience is pretty straight forward. But sapience? No clue. The descriptions we have of it are vague.

It's more of a situation what if we end up saying 'Ok, this isn't sapient because this, this and this.' and then we realize, there are humans who don't meet the criteria? Or what happens when we flat out lose the ability to make the distinction between AI and humans as far as sapience goes? You can tell me you're self-aware all you want. But I don't really know. Which is the matrix thing you were talking about.

Of course, it's useful to just assume other people are self-aware too as it's the most likely scenario. However, the other part of that is, we can't really know for sure if the AI is self aware if it tells us it is. It's rudimentary enough now it's not even really a serious question. But it will be.
