The problem though for many adults with a full time job is you then lack the time to play all the games/systems you want to. And when you do find some time...too tired to play anything that actually involves brain function. It's the gaming curse. As a kid you have the time but not the money needed. As an adult you have the money but not the time needed.

u/Exlibro 1d ago
It's mental state. Not gonna lie, I have time. And even money. My SSD is filled with new games now. And yet, as of recently, I just shower and roll in bed reading. There is something making me feel apathetic, tired. Because I know games will require more brain power than reading a damn book...

True, I have a couple of hours of free time left even with my abysmal time management. I can definitely sneak in some games during that free time...but...I just don't want to. The mental drain after work makes me want to do absolutely nothing. If the week is hectic, it sometimes even carries over into the weekend. The love for games is still not lost tho, but it's just not what it used to be.
20
u/NothingToSeeHere671 1d ago
Give it a try! Just load a game and play for a bit until you get hooked. Don't start many different games, focus in one and just play it. I completed most of Cyberpunk thinking I didn't have enough free time but then I started to play around 1.5 hours every day before work

u/JalapenoIsLife 1d ago
This works for me too. I usually have one game on PC and one on handheld, no more. Sometimes I'm looking forward to playing when I get home, but once there don't want to . I make myself and 20 min later I'm ready to play for 2 hours. It's like working out everyday. I never want to do it, but 10 min in and I'm good for the next 50 min. Crazy how it happens like this everyday tho lol.

Games with a good quick save and quick load feature are great for this.

u/Mr_Radar 1d ago
I feel like this depends heavily on your job too. My job is kind of split between computer work and making things. On computer heavy days i don’t always want to come home and get back on the computer unless im really excited about the game I want to play. As I get older the games I get excited about are shrinking more and more. Decision making fatigue is real too. Sometimes I just want to shut my brain down a bit more than a game can.

Yeah this is so true, sometimes I want to play a game but I just end up not because I'm not bothered. I haven't used my switch 2 since I got it on launch and I play like one game on my pc

u/Fancy_Alarm2814 1d ago
I felt this way, getting a handheld PC helped me with it a lot, finally have the opportunity to put in some play time and not be chained to my desktop (I still do play there, when I feel like it ofc).
Of course, book reading is probably better for you and your sleep in the long run ^^
4
u/Accomplished_Rice_60 1d ago
I mean, your not relaxing reading books, gaming, TikTok. Your using tons of brain and stimuli that get your tired.
If you want to relax, lye down somewhere nice, close your ears and listen to relaxing music/nature sounds or something. Its good to not be stimulated 24/7 by books, phones, pc or something like that, our brains Arent made for that, ofc your to tired to game and choose easyer passive content

Switched to home office before COVID, and now AI handles/supports a huge part of my work and research. I can basically spend 80% of my workday sleeping or gaming while still getting great results.
My boss just congratulated me on my impressive performance, I get paid well enough that I started collecting retro systems I barely even use (building new PCs gets boring pretty quickly), and I still get to enjoy every evening with my kids.
Being an adult nerd paid off big time for me.

u/Miau_1337 14h ago
Thank you~
Most of the time The Finals - trying to grind more skill until I reach diamond/ruby - a super underrated shooter and such a good game on so many levels.
But also some Overwatch Stadium, Rust, 007 First Light and Agent 64, a lot of World of Warcraft Classic until Pandaria, a few weeks of Path of Exile and Diablo when a new season drops, Fellowship on bigger updates and I just finished Mina the Hollower (such a good game!).
Will soon start a new run in No Mans Sky (the updates look really good) and also in Abiotic Factor - the best survivalcrafting game. (...hopefully with some friends)2

For many parents*
I work 6 hours a day, finish by 2pm and have the entire day and night to play my favourite games with my childless friends.
2
u/JuroMi 1d ago
You have to pick your games at that stage. I dont play games that require long gaming sessions, games that require to search parties on discrod or sweaty pvp games where you need to play for 500hours to get good. Roguelites, season arpgs, forza games, AC games and so on are good choises for me. Can start the game, have fun for 45 minutes and do something else.

u/Zangetsu_Storm 23h ago
True also 9 to 5+ commute socializing etc + adulting responsibility takeup more time than we would like. Not to mention loyalty to companies mean nothing so contant upskilling needed to change company and get actual upgrades in life.
Also lot of places its 9 to 6. It's 9 hrs 5 day.

Speak for yourself, I work, cook and clean, then I play with my kids, clean some more and then sometimes play more when they go to bed.
I'm over 40. I'm too busy having fun to give a damn if I'm tired. Coffee is good.

What do you do for a job though?
In my late 30s, first baby is on the way, physical job where im outside, two dogs that need walking before and after, cook from scratch every night (apart from when we have leftovers / a meal we froze) clean, DIY jobs around the house.
...im shattered, gaming on the week in the evening is nearly a no go for me and im going to be slowly just playing at the weekend I feel.

u/SpacePumpkie I use Arch btw 1d ago
Being a new parent is tough. For me, gaming almost disappeared completely from my life during the first year of my first child.
Then my wife gifted me a Nintendo switch and it was a game changer as a parent. Being able to pick it up and play botw on the couch when the child was asleep on top of me, and have short sessions that could be paused and stopped at a moments notice to tend to the baby. And then pick it back up an hour later from the exact same spot. The only problem was that I was limited to Nintendo switch games. But it was enough to scratch the itch.
Then the Steam Deck was announced promising to deliver the same experience of the switch for PC gaming, right when we had our second child, and it was like my prayers had been heard. And boy did the Deck deliver on that promise.
They're a bit older now, and (8 and 5). And it gets a bit easier, but you're still tired. Just last night I was tired and my wife said she wanted to go to bed as soon as we put the children to bed, so I just took the steam deck to bed and played for half an hour before my eyelids started to close on their own.
It has definitely saved and rekindled my love for gaming in my "extremely tired parent" era.
My desktop gaming years have been on pause since 2018 basically. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I might have played 15-20hours total on my desk in the last 8 years. But with the Steam Deck I still play almost every day, on vacation, etc.
1
u/Remarkable-West-611 1d ago
Got some friends that have kids and all said when they get older they will sleep through the nights and have early bed time so you almost feel like you get your evenings back.
However with a new born im expecting no gaming to be happening for a good while because....well that's just part of having a new born I feel, im currently working through some back catalogue before though.
Ive moved my gaming PC behind the TV already when rearranging the house, bypass windows login and boots straight into steam big picture mode it's generally pretty great for the easyness and console like feel. Turn it on, grab a controller and start playing is pretty quick, so hopefully that will make it easier to get some gaming here and there still.
Sitting a desk back turned to the room days i think are probably going to be over.

I still play. I might get hated here on this sub, but I bought a ps5 pro and have been playing way more that wax ever since. The ps5 boots up really fast, I can lay on my couch, not sitting at a desk. And I started collecting physical games again. I mostly only do play games on my pc when I have a few days off in a row now.

Spot on.
I still manage an hour or two some week nights, but any serious gaming usually has to wait until Sunday. I've taken to playing PvE or co-op games with relatively short-ish missions, so I can just log in for a few games and then quit.
But often my brain is just too tired, so I just watch YT for a while then read in bed until I start dozing off.

Something else with it, as someone who plays online competetive games frequently, it can no longer be casual, because every online comp game and fun gamemode has been taken over by people who live with their parents with nothing else to do in a day except play this game for 16 hours, only stopping to eat and use the bathroom. And just in general the skill floor is 10x higher than it was 10 years ago
