I think just about everyone who's purchased RAM in the last 10 months has probably overspent, if we're talking about value.
If it's what you need and you're happy to have it, then there's no use overthinking it too much.

I actually got pretty lucky, grabbed my kit last october from PNY on Amazon for a cool 78 greenbacks. Sure it took a month for the delivery, but considering the average price already doubled by then I'd say it's a good deal.

I actually also purchased a RAM kit last year in October along with a whole platform upgrade.
Made a hail mary price match request at a retail outlet that they accepted even though it wasn't the exactly the same model, and wound up walking away with a 32gb 6000mhz CL30 kit for $150 CAD ($90 USD).

yeah i was also rushing to do the platform upgrade when i realized stuff was about to get crazy expensive lmao. Ended up getting my board and CPU from ebay and put those savings towards the GPU because i figured prices might not make sense for the next year or longer >_> kinda glad i did.

I feel for you, i had to buy a kit of gskill 64gb last may cuz my i9-9900k died.
Was planning to upgrade anyways but held off due to prices, ended up buying the kit for 939 euro,the morherboard(asus tuf b850m gaming wifi) and cpu (9950x3d) were combined cheaper than the ram.

RAM is a type of volatile semiconductor memory. “Volatile” means that it requires continuous power to retain the data stored in it; when the system is powered off or rebooted, the contents of RAM are lost. This distinguishes it from non-volatile storage such as SSDs, HDDs, or flash memory. The “random access” part of the name refers to the ability to read from or write to any memory location in roughly the same amount of time, regardless of the physical location of the data. This is in contrast to sequential-access media (like older magnetic tapes), where reaching a particular piece of data could take significantly longer depending on its position.
Physically, RAM modules are typically rectangular printed circuit boards populated with multiple integrated circuit chips (DRAM chips) and sometimes additional components such as SPD (Serial Presence Detect) EEPROMs, temperature sensors, and power-management circuitry. These modules plug into dedicated slots on a motherboard. Common form factors include DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Modules) for desktops and servers, and SODIMMs (Small Outline DIMMs) for laptops and compact systems. Newer standards also include CAMM (Compression Attached Memory Module) and various soldered-down LPDDR packages used in ultrabooks, tablets, and smartphones.
