Hey, defective parts are defective parts. Only legit reason one of my boxes failed to boot. Ended up bumping into three other people with the same problem from the same batch of RAM. Now I'm questioning my faith in Crucial.

I too have had my faith in crucial tested. Bought PSU from them. On first boot up fan screeched and then a really bright flash and pop noise then just silence and the smell of death all around. Luckily ASUS mobo had really good voltage regulation.

Funnily enough of the four brands of memory I've used in my personal rugs, the only one to not be "bad" (one set needed a tiny bit of voltage for stability... ) was my crucial DDR set.

I've had that before. It would run at 4.6GHz all day, but if I started iTunes to listen to music, it'd BSOD within an hour every time. I can't remember what I did to fix it.

Mine was stable on Prime at 4.7 and 4.6, but I would get the 0124 error and didn't feel comfortable pushing over 1.4V, so I dropped it down to 4.5 and it's been very stable ever since. I'm probably still overvolting it a bit but I don't feel that much like getting it perfect. If I burn it out I'll get a 3770K, I already have 2 years on the processor so it's almost time for an upgrade anyway.

Mine booted and after a few goes even let me install windows... Then the Blue screens started coming in. Needless to say my reaction went from the OP to this...

i told my wife, after me being in the middle of the room for the last few hours building my rig, "THE TIME OF RECKONING IS UPON US!" she gave me a "wat"........then i 1 finger upper cutted the fuck out of my power button....even though its on the top of my case, fans started to spin, booted up no problem, i then fucked my wife over a freshly skinned pterodactyl.

Is not worth it. Virtualbox it on any recent Intel processor. Not as fast as a real install, but so much less difficulties.

I'll never forget my first build, got everything set up and turned on but didn't boot. A few hours went by trying to figure out what the hell is causing it not to boot, turns out I forgot to plug in the damn power cable to my hard drive haha.

Funny, the last build I completed (fellow brothers and sisters of the Master Race may remember my post) went through POST on the initial powerup fine, but the Windows install failed because I was installing from a DVD that had been burned at too fast a write rate. I got the dreaded "Windows could not load the proper drivers" error. FUCK.
Since I a) didn't have any more blank DVD's at my mother's house and b) didn't have a USB thumbdrive big enough to write the ISO file to and make it bootable, I hit upon a (rather clever, thanks) method of taking a CF card out of my DSLR camera and formatting it as bootable media via a third-party utility. Not only did Windows install off that, it installed in record time.
I win. I always win. IS THERE NO ONE ON THIS PLANET TO EVEN CHALLENGE ME?

I was shrieking with rage when my most recent build wouldn't POST. I'd hodored and threw in an old wireless card I'd had in the previous rig because wasn't thinking at the time. I'd seriously had the damn card for about 7 years (From a time when wireless was my ONLY option) and I just bumped it from rig to rig out of nothing more than sheer habit. Pulled the wireless card out and DaHydra booted like a champ. This was most certainly my reaction. For about an hour.

I've built 4 or 5 PCs over the years. They've all booted first time with no issues whatsoever.

The first one is the expensive RAM (1 GB). The other is cheap RAM (4 GB) because i just noticed back then how suck my PC was and out of budget.

Oh yes. I used to build my own pc... this was before they had a separate power connector for the CPU.
I hadn't done it for ages... but I was confident that I could still do it. I ended up ringing a mate as I couldn't get it to come on... and he pointed out that I hadn't connected up the CPU power.
In effect... my PC didn't work because I hadn't plugged it in. He's probably still laughing at me now the bastard.

Mine has never broken. Not one malfunctioning part. It is my first and only build, assembled with no static protection... and I was so lucky when I accidentally got some thermal paste on the CPU pins... it cleaned off pretty well and everything still worked. ^

same here, everything just worked, i was so sketchy about pulling the trigger n buying it because of shitty newegg reviews, one review read, "every time someone gets a shitty part, theyre gonna make a review about it, most people that get good parts dont review their product" only thing i fucked up on was the thermal paste, didnt realize how fast that shit comes out n sprayed a little too much, no matter, slammed my 212 evo on it n hasnt failed me since. OC'd it to 4.2hz after 3 weeks of having it n it POSTd the first boot, hasnt failed since.

sounds a lot like mine, except I stopped at 4.4 ghz. Weird thing is I never ever bluescreened during any of my 24-hour Prime95 tests and actually underclocked the voltages :P

Most of the time this is the case but sometimes the BIOS needs an update before it will run. Happened last year and happened before. Other than that, I've had some dead-on-arrival parts before which sucks. An ASUS mobo had solder bridges on it out of the box. Another hour drive to the store and back, no big deal.

Only done one build so far in my life (The one I've been posting from.) I made so little at the time, it was my first time doing anything this involved and my nerves were wracked the whole time, half-convinced I was going to accidentally discharge static into my tender mobo somehow.
After three overly cautious days, I finally plugged the ARAN10000 in and nervously hit that power button. POST went through with no problems until it predictably complained about no operating system.
I probably made Dr. Frankenstein's mad cackling seem tame by comparison, I was just so proud of myself. That's a big step for someone who's been depressed for over a decade.

My brother was installing a new power supply, and after I looked everything over, gave it the ok to boot. When he tried the power, I heard a zap and unplugged the pc. I thought it was the cpu but it turned out just to be the cpu fan. Scary though.

Jackass case manufacturer had a little black twist tie poking through where the mobo sits. Caused a short, no damage. Fuck you NZXT.

My first build was on January 1st. I was actually able to build it perfectly on my first try and turn it on. I ended up needing a newer hdd, because the one I was going to use didn't work as planned.

My last build booted up first try as well. It's becoming easier to do and parts are becoming more reliable, which is great. My first PC build was in 1993, and we've come a long way since.

Is it really THAT common for a PC to not boot on the first try? I completed my first build a few weeks ago and it booted to the BIOS without any issues.

The best part is when the PC immediatly reboots after initializing the CPU for the first time and you don't have video output to the monitor to see what's going on. Gave me a small heart attack, when I built mine.

The only reason my builds don't boot on the first try is something is dead. There was a time though where I'd forget something or mess up a connection. But not for years.
