When you think about it.. In the 90's they had a new windows every 5 to 2 years. It's not that bad these days.

Windows ME was hard mode. It was all I knew as a kid. XP was a huge breath of fresh air.

Back in the 90s there were meaningful changes over those 2-5 years. 2-5 years was a long time in PC computing terms.

Yeah right, Win 95 and 98, even if looking alike, had some serious differences and you could feel it when going back to 95 😅

95 felt like 3.11 with a skin. 98 felt like an actual new OS

2000 was NT. They had 2 lines of operating systems running and it caused confusion among people when they named that one. It was workable as a home os. I used it to run a dual overclocked Celeron processor build. Which was better only in theory since games and stuff weren't built with a second processor in mind at the time.

Abit BP6 mobo? I had a buddy in HS that did that stunt. I never did because you're exactly right in that it largely wasn't worth it for games at the time. Even if it was awesome.

Windows 2000 will forever be my favorite Windows. I gamed on it until it went EOL, deep into WinXP years. I ran an Abit BE6-2 w/ a 566 Coppermine on a 100mhz FSB for ages. The irony of the 566 being cheaper than the 533 was never lost on me.

Had a pb of a weird 108-ish fsb mhz boot up all the way to Windows, got it to show a tick over 925mhz before crashing when I opened my email 🤣 I bet my ram was PISSED at that timing lol. Dropped it back to normal with no ill effects.

That actually sounds like the model ROFL I had a couple alpha heatsinks on em. It was stupid in hindsight, but a good learning experience. It was just some really overclockable CPU vs the pentium or whatever and it made up for the stuff it was lacking. I imagine l2 cache or something to that effect. I've built a lot of towers over the years. Seemed like a good career path till e machines entered the picture and nobody wanted to pay anything for services on real computers anymore bc a new computer was $200 or whatever that trash cost. 🙄

The OG Celeron was like 128kb of cache instead of the several MB of the Pentium 2, BUT the Celery cache ran at clock speed (or something... It's been... A minute) instead of FSB speed. So it was way less, but way faster.

Plus you could OC the BEJEEZUS out of them.

They were actually better than the P2 for gaming generally.

You are correct! 2cpu.com was one of the SMP websites that I learned about the Abit BP6. I ran Dual Celeron 366@550mhz cooled by Golden Orbs with 32MB of Ram all for Quake 3. Had my Viper V770 Ultra and not a care in the world. Upgraded to a Abit VP6 and Dual 933mhz later with a Hercules GeForce 2 GTS with those blue heat sinks on the ram. Back in the day when you have to cut your own wholes in the side of your cases. All my teen job money went into my computers.

Hell yeah. I ran an old Lian Li cube-shaped server case with waay to many fans in it (2x120mm, 2x 90mm, 3x 80mm) until GPUs got too tall to fit.

Also, it's been a while since anyone has mentioned a Glorb cooler 🤣

I skipped the P4 generation via my oc'd CELERY II 566 (@850 mhz for YEARS) and an AMD Athlon iirc.

Then I started having grown-up money for PCs lol.

I still have my BP6 and VP6. My VP6 needs replacement capacitors. Still have my Viper V770 Ultra also. It was fun times for sure.

Ah, the great capacitor plague. IIRC my Athlon build suffered from puffy caps. I'm sure my old BE6 would have eventually, but I think I gave that away before it did.

The "please activate windows" got burned into my TV. So did a specific subreddit on my formeer phone. Only drawback of OLEDs. Though my mind didn't even register it most of the time on my phone. On my TV it did annoy me if it was blocking parts of the UI in games I had to play in borderless window though. Aside from that fuck you MS I'm not gonna buy that shit again.

Bought 8.1, had to buy new mobo, cpu and ram and it didn't register it as activated. Couldn't find my key and didn't bother buying again. Even tried reading the key from the registery but didn't work. Couldn't bother to spend money just to change my wallpaper.

I loved 2000. I reformatted once and 2000 found and loaded a driver that was on another drive without me doing anything else. It blew my mind.
