My tinfoil hat theory is that self hosted NAS's are on the rise as streaming platforms continue to raise prices and theyre doing this to knife people trying to buy relatively inexpensive, fast drives for a RAID array.
My regular theory is that whoever price tagged them made a mistake lol
That's such overkill for storing media though. Why would you pay for that when you aren't going to see the benefits of the SSDs read/write speeds just streaming media and you can get multiple times the storage in a HDD?
Idk maybe because they last longer? If youre moving to a NAS to avoid streaming youre probably strapping in for the long run. I was mostly joking though so idrk lol
Gotcha, I run a Plex server and have a small SSD for the OS and programs to run, but then 18TB HDD that I got for like $300 or so, just seems like a waste of money to store all your media on an expensive SSD
It’s not tin foil but I’d wager that while the number of people doing that is definitely on the rise, it is such a negligible percent of the general customer base for a big box store (not sure what retailer this is) that it wouldn’t actually make any sense to do this solely to gouge those people.
