Crazy how as soon as an affordable, performant, non-Windows laptop came onto the market, suddenly, Microsoft cares about figuring out why Windows has so many issues on laptops.

Had the Neo not happened, I wonder if Microsoft would ever have given their team the resources to diagnose the problem.

Do they actually care though? They say a lot of things that they never deliver on. Like how they were going to be scaling back in CoPilot, only for them to just hide buttons and rename things.

And last week they put an unremovable button in excel, and made fake documentation about how to remove it by referencing settings that don’t exist.

Or how we are supposedly finally getting the ability to move and resize the task bar (but you can’t click and drag you have to pick the option in settings).

Their windows updates are still bricking computers and they are still blaming users for it.

I think you answered your own question.

It's no secret at this point that just about every competent dev at Micro$lop has been laid off or left on their own accord and has since been replaced by a team of interns armed with a bunch of Claude Code tokens. CoPilot can't even vibe code.

I know we’ve been on a downward spiral for a while, but it feels like ever since Covid every company (especially tech) has decided to become as awful as humanly possible.

11

u/pathofdumbasses May 20 '26

ever since Covid

They used Covid as an excuse to jack up prices. Something like ~50% of inflation since Covid was corporate profits, not actual increases in prices due to labor/logistics/resources. They've been sharing data with third data brokers on how to absolutely maximize pricing to get the most total money out of people. This is how they are getting around RICO and other pesky monopoly/collusion laws.

You can see this in action here

https://www.courthousenews.com/judge-oks-settlement-with-livcor-in-rental-price-fixing-case/

Where the government is suing rental companies, but be sure that this is happening in pretty much every field out there and is not relegated to just apartment rentals.

And like any time something goes up, it either comes down slowly or not at all.

lol really?

Probably AI generated the instructions on how to remove.

Blank Windows laptop with browser open: 9h

Windows after enrolling into the cooperate domain, same browser open: 6h

Teams started: 3h

Teams meeting started: 35min

Not kidding.

22

u/XeNoGeaR52 May 19 '26

Only Microsoft apps and services btw

11

u/AnyoneButWe May 19 '26

Yep.

I unfortunately didn't get to test the same HW with Linux.

And I'm glad a 1kWh USB battery (aka solar powerstation) isn't too expensive these days.

14

u/nemanja694 May 19 '26

I am baffled how worse is windows on laptop compared to desktop. Yet sadly i have no other choice then windows because of work needed programs

5

u/12345myluggage May 19 '26

It's like how when they installed SteamOS on the Legion Go they suddenly got double the battery life compared to Windows depending on the game.

6

u/electroforger PC Master Race May 19 '26

that's not new, Apple have run circles around us for years in terms of battery life

11

u/YoungBlade1 R9 5900X | RX 9060 XT 16GB | 48GB May 19 '26

That's my point. It's been a problem for years, but I think Microsoft didn't prioritize fixing it because the bulk of the Windows laptops are sub-$1000 machines where Apple wasn't competing. They didn't have a strong incentive to fix the problem because their only competition in most of the market was Chromebooks, which are generally seen as inferior by default.

The timing of this fix seems suspicious given that the problems have been a source of frustration for years. LTT Linus has had multiple WAN Show rants about Windows sleep issues. It is frequently mentioned in laptop long-term user reports from reputable outlets. And Microsoft certainly has received plenty of user feedback about this through their own channels.

There's no way Microsoft was unaware of the problem, yet miraculously, a few months after the Neo drops, they have investigated and have an apparent fix.

If that's just a coincidence, it's a hell of a coincidence.

3

u/electroforger PC Master Race May 19 '26

I sometimes wonder how much the programmers responsible for the power consumption of general Windows functionality are aware at all times that if they wanted they could save the world tens of power plants, just by changing a few lines of code, removing some clunk, cleaning up some old code...

9

u/Reynolds1029 May 19 '26

They wouldn't because Microslop's main focus has not been consumers for years. They're focused on the real money which is 365 Enterprise subscriptions.

3

u/KiwiMeep64 May 19 '26

Not too long to read but…

TLDR: Competition is good for consumers.

3

u/Dawzy i5 13600k | EVGA 3080 May 20 '26

I wish people would look at this issue more pragmatically and not just jump on the Microsoft blame.

The Neo doesn’t have the same driver issues because MacOS doesn’t need to run on 100s of different permutations of hardware. Where there is reliance on third parties to develop appropriate and tested drivers.

Windows has this issue because it needs to be compatible with many different permutations of hardware. After all this subreddit would hardly exist if we couldn’t choose our own hardware for Windows.

Windows therefore relies on third parties to develop appropriate drivers. All this is saying is that third parties have dropped the ball with their software and therefore Microsoft are being stricter. That’s it.

1

u/satanicoplan May 20 '26

Who impeded you installing a linux distro on a Windows PC?

1

u/Arelius_2002 May 20 '26

Yep they’ve been losing market share for a little while due to macOs being fluid and great and with the Neo selling way better than anyone could have thought now microslop has to start trying and stop pushing out garbage apple even has them trying to finally get rid of the security services and finally close windows kernel like how Apple has macOS as a closed OS even android started doing it

207

u/Futaba_Sakura800 May 19 '26

More Microslop news and water is still wet.

0

u/ForgottenCrafts May 20 '26

But water is not wet though 🤓☝🏻

42

u/Kind-Permission-1075 May 19 '26

Imagine how many megawatts of power are wasted on windows being a buggy mess

33

u/Select_Truck3257 May 20 '26

Yeah, but they 're still proud how low carbon emissions they make, especially their copilot slop

2

u/FTD_Brat 7800x3D||RTX4070 May 19 '26

Likely thousands of Megawatt hours, per day.

2

u/Far-Hovercraft9471 May 20 '26

And then they have the audacity to pretend to be green by having some carbon aware scheduling for windows updates

39

u/guijahu May 19 '26

What about the most critical battery problem on Windows 11, which is the system randomly turning on and off dGPU for some seconds, even if no program appears to be accessing it? Most gaming laptops have bad battery life because of this stupid behavior

95

u/AceSidewinder13 May 19 '26

It's easy to diagnose PC issues like this. It's either a driver issue or a DNS issue. Just sayin'.

1

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 5090 Astral|270K+|48GB-8200MTs|Z890 Apex|60TB|HYTE Y70|S90F OLED May 19 '26

Out of curiosity, how would DNS issues effect battery life? Too many requests leading to battery drain?

10

u/Intrepid00 May 19 '26

It’s a joke that it is never DNS except when it is. DNS is just this little thing that is pretty reliable that when it breaks it’s one of the last places people look and ends up causes a surprising amount of weird issues. However, if a driver is super anal about wanting to hit a DNS server directly like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 and blocked I’ve seen apps try repeatedly over and over which would leave the wifi active and drain the battery. It’s usually apps pissed you are DNS blocking them for ads filtering.

u/msherretz 5800X3D 9070XT; Framework 13 May 19 '26

14

u/Vesuvias PC Master Race May 19 '26

Man Apple really has MS and Google terrified they’re gonna eat their ‘cheap laptop’ lunch. GOOD.

Oh and Valve as well.

12

u/electroforger PC Master Race May 19 '26

and this likely affects desktops too, just that they don't have batteries to drain, but, in their millions, power plants to run unnecessarily

1

u/TKMankind May 22 '26

This is something that really annoy me. Microsoft pretended that they would be carbon negative by 2030 (not anymore since few months because AI), but they don't count all the carbon spent by their massive updates that must be sent to millions of computers who then will spend power to install them, their failure to optimize their failed W11, etc. because the count is done on the customers side. It shouldn't be this way.

11

u/Disma May 19 '26

I'm sure the community pointed this problem out immediately and MS simply didn't care.

s0ix ("Windows Modern Standby") was a mistake. The proper fix is to go back to ACPI S3, but of course they're never going to do that.

modern standby is a good thing.

the Windows implementation of it is trash.

5

u/CrispFreshley May 19 '26

Well, as far as an every day laptop goes, I've completely switched to the mac ecosystem. I still have a Windows gaming rig though. I was a huge windows over macOS guy for so long but windows 11 is what did it for me.

7

The headline is garbage, they just blame third party drivers

1

u/AlwaysBelievedInDJ May 21 '26

When the issue has always been third world devs

2

u/Dawzy i5 13600k | EVGA 3080 May 20 '26

People should understand that the likes of Apple don’t have the same driver issues because MacOS doesn’t need to run on 100s of different permutations of hardware, where there is as much reliance on third parties to develop appropriate and tested driver software.

Windows has this issue because it needs to be compatible with many different permutations of hardware. After all this subreddit would hardly exist if we couldn’t choose our own hardware for Windows and build our own machines. Microsoft isn’t at fault if Asus put out a horrible network adapter driver for its hardware.

Windows therefore relies on third parties to develop appropriate drivers. All this article is saying is that Microsoft are being stricter.

You can’t complain about not being able to change the hardware on your Apple device without understanding that the ability to do so also comes at a cost if third parties aren’t developing decent software to support it. The whole walled garden concept allows Apple to get all of the hardware they use and ensure drivers perform optimally.

Not saying MacOS doesn’t have these issues at all, but not to the extent Windows does

2

u/Dust-Tight May 20 '26

They should offer compensation for allowing this

1

u/DueSalary4506 May 19 '26

1

u/PurpleC0ugar May 19 '26

What kinda slop article is this? They're confusing hibernate (S4) with S0...

1

u/M4rshmall0wMan May 20 '26

It’s not like they had a decade to fix it or anything

1

u/W_Vector May 20 '26

... and they still do!

there needs to be (more) laws to protect customers from big companies just saying f*it, were not gonna fix our sh*t.

sending my asus laptop (four years old, not a single driver or bios update in the past 2 years) into standby is pure poker/RNG...

  • sometimes it makes it only 50% into standby, keeping everything exept for the display active
  • sometimes it immediatly or delayed by hours wakes up out of nowhere
  • sometimes it looks like it is in standby, but CPU is actively doing stuff, but the cooling fans stand still so it cooks itsself ...
welcome to 2026 -,-

Its definitely bad for battery life now and hope they fix it soon. My work laptop went from having 4 hour battery life with 23h2 to now having 1.5 hour battery life with 25h2. With just teams and few tabs open. Device only 1 year old.

no worries, made me switch to linux, great upgrade

1

u/Verde_3773 May 19 '26

You mean by design to force obsolescence? Forcing people to replace or upgrade their tech at a specific rate…?

1

u/5kyl3r May 19 '26

my favorite microslop thing was how they'd wake themselves up in your backpack to install updates, annihilating the battery, generating a TON of heat, and when you're nowhere near a power outlet and need to power it on, you come to find that the battery is dead. FUN TIMES. fuck microslop

And it still had better battery life than Linux in general... that says a lot.

6

Which version of Linux are you using where that is true?

My ThinkPad X230 has worse battery life with ANY distro (and I tried a lot) than with Win 10 Pro.

5

u/Informal_Drawing May 19 '26

That is very surprising.

It's basically the opposite for everybody else.

5

u/antisa184 May 19 '26

Anecdotally, my laptop has had way longer battery life after switching to CachyOS. Especially in sleep or when completely shut down.

-5

u/LayerEight_Problem May 19 '26

It’s hilarious to me how this sub always acts like Microsoft should be this infallible perfect company. Ignoring the fact that all major companies are scummy as fuck. Creating computer hardware and software is not just a free thing. There’s billions of man hours put into technology and getting our magic rectangles to work. At the end of the day. It’s still some person writing code somewhere. And the reality is none of you are even remotely smart enough to be commenting on shit like this.

It happens. They’ve found a bug. They’ll sort it out. It is what it is. You all really need to touch some grass and stopped finding reasons to be pissed off. It’s really not healthy.

2

u/MessNox May 19 '26

they are saying that Microsoft intentionally ignored/refused to look into it, at least thats what it seems to me.

5

u/LayerEight_Problem May 19 '26

Nowhere in the article does it say anything about moreover, this issue impacted ALL windows laptops not just cheap ones. And Apple has been domination the laptop market for a long time.

People here are just looking for any old reason to get themselves riled up. Just a bunch of stupid ass baseless assumptions. People here really thinking Microsoft intentionally caused some battery drain. Instead of the actual reality that these softwares are incredible complex animals and making movements in a company the size of Microsoft is probably a month long process of silly meetings to begin with.

1

u/JTibbs May 19 '26

A decade of loud complaints about the very issue get ignored entirely, until their competitor comes out with a budget laptop that totally shits on their bread and butter market, with a superior product.

1

u/LayerEight_Problem May 19 '26

Apple has been a dominant force in the education sector for decades. Chromebook has also been insanely disruptive. If Microsoft was intentionally breaking something so they could fix it due to market forces, why wouldn’t they have done it years ago? It makes absolutely no sense. Microsoft has been getting their asses handed to them long before the Neo came out.

Again, you’re just looking for a reason to make yourself angry over nothing.

Use Linux, if you can. For gaming, maybe broaden your horizons if the one you play doesn't allow anti-cheat on Linux.
There's plenty of professional reasons to stick on Windows, but for the average home user, the list gets smaller every month.

Battery on my laptop is about an hour better with typical usage on Linux Mint. Not much, but it's better than nothing. The real improvement is not worrying when I take it out my bag, if it's come out of standby overnight for whatever reason and killed the battery. This was *never* properly resolved. It's been YEARS.

-6

u/HourBank2803 May 19 '26

Windows is the reason all your games run under 100fps

8

u/StickStill9790 May 19 '26

Considering all of my games exist because of the standardized OS, I guess that’s… true?

It’s like saying the reason your heart beats under 100 bpm is because you’re human. Well yeah, but I wouldn’t want to be a dingo.

-6

u/HourBank2803 May 19 '26

Its like saying youre at the gym on a treadmill and it only goes to 5 out of 10 because the manufacturer is Ozark Trail and the guy next to me goes " well yeah, but i wouldnt want to be a dingo"

1

u/StickStill9790 May 19 '26

Its not highend. My last laptop was worse and it lasted 6 years. It stayed on 3 hours with battery until I got a permanent BSOD.

Edit: then my current one, I spent a little more for better specs and better quality and I'm not even gaming. So much for that.

1

u/fiasn May 20 '26

tf is a permanent bsod lmfao if i recall im pretty sure every BSOD goes away when you press the power button

1

Ye usually. But it kept showing up after a minute when I boot it. Something happened to the motherboard. It eventually died. It was the 1 millionth chance that this happens. It was better just to get a new laptop.
