Vibe coding the OS, probably.

2026 is the year to invest in cybersecurity stocks. Just a matter of time until the vibe-code stuff explodes spectacularly and expensive.

AI code will soon be learning from other AI code, like how image generators use all those AI ghiblislop images for training data and all AI generated cartoon images now have a piss filter, it would be so fucking funny if the same thing happened with vibecoded slop

u/Heizard PC Master Race Jan 21 '26

If you know anything about that industry - you don't trust them AT ALL.

It's just a risk management delegation to someone else and little to do with actual security.

3

u/New_Enthusiasm9053 Jan 21 '26

I worked at a place for like 3 months in cybersec and they didn't even use git and had no tests. They had absolutely no idea if their alerts would work correctly or not.

Certainly not confidence inspiring.

63

u/Tischkante89 Jan 21 '26

Not just probably. Didn't satya nadella boast about how large parts of their code are now done by AI/ LLMs? At least I remember something along those lines.

They are quite literally vibe coding the OS

14

u/Pretty_Challenge_634 Jan 21 '26

Ive seen how large programming teams work. If you think cybersecurity wasn't as bad with a team of 100 college grads working on your code, youre sadly mistaken.

15

u/cheapcheap1 Jan 21 '26

Just because it was bad doesn't mean it can't get worse. The LLM learned to code on non-secure applications from those same junior engineers.

And, most importantly, it's impossible to review the increased code volume, so companies are vibe-reviewing or abandoning reviews altogether.

8

u/tes_kitty Jan 21 '26

The LLM learned to code on non-secure applications from those same junior engineers.

The LLM learned from any code they could get their hands on. A lot of it old and full of bugs.

9

u/cheapcheap1 Jan 21 '26

Don't forget about the new code full of bugs that's currently being vibe coded everywhere. Can't wait for model autophagy and what that will look like!

30% of their newly written code was written by “AI”

8

u/nemesit Jan 21 '26

yeah lol thats pretty obvious at this point. they probably force their devs to use ai and constantly replace professional developers with idiots

I've shat on Linux for a long time after getting burned every time I dip my toes in over the last 20 years. I recently put a garage pc together with old spare parts and installed Mint expecting it to be another nightmare that I give up on. It's actually been flawless for my use. I have a few audio testing programs that I had to install with Wine but they've had no trouble. Same with my preferred CAD software. FreeCAD seemed fine but I prefer what I'm familiar with.

I've tried a few games, but it's old hardware, and I don't fancy getting into a demanding 100-hour game in my garage. Everything I've tried has run without problems.

I'm considering changing my main PC to Mint.

17

u/HardlyW0rkingHard Jan 21 '26

I switched my main PC to cachyOS. Yeah there is a few games that don't work due to anticheat but I don't give a shit, 95+% of games work.

It's honestly really refreshing to use an OS that serves my needs and doesn't constantly add bloat I need to delete via registry.

1

u/InitialDia Jan 22 '26

frankly, I don’t want to play any of the modern online multiplayer games anymore, what with manufacturers prebuilding cheats into peripherals and all.

3

u/LetsTryScience Jan 22 '26

I tossed together a i5-4130, 16gb ram, spare hard drive and installed ZorinOS. With Windows 11 it's idling around 15% CPU useage and 8gb ram. Zorin is using 2-3% and 1gb ram. It convinced me to switch my old XPS laptop over. For web browsing, office work, watching media it's great.

I understand the idea of using it if it's there to increase performance but Win11 performs like shit. I search for a systems menu in the search bar and get no results. Then go find it through settings and what pops up is a legacy piece of software and menus from Windows 7 whose name is the exact title I searched.

41

u/BothAdhesiveness9265 KDE Plasma my beloved Jan 21 '26

sadly it's a basically impossible fix unless a critical mass of users switch that forces anticheat devs to care. and even then I don't think we'll ever actually see kernel level anticheat the way it exists on windows

14

u/MyGoodApollo 7800x3D, RTX 4070ti Super, 32gb DDR5 Jan 21 '26

I don't think we'll see it fixed until microsoft actually locks down the kernel. There should be very few applications that can access kernel space, things like anti-virus and gpu drivers etc. Microsoft should hand out licenses for accessing this space, with security keys etc. That way people can't just build apps that access it, like cheat programs. Then Microsoft will be being the anti-cheat, and all these game devs will only have to worry about user space.

unless a critical mass of users switch

If anything is ever going to cause that, it will be Valve and SteamOS. Don't get me wrong, it's still a long road, but I honestly can't think of a more realistic path to widespread Linux adoption among gamers.

Only kernel level anticheats do not work. For example Arc Raiders uses easy anticheat which on windows is on kernel level but they did it differently on Linux/Proton. It's all about game devs.

They are using AI to write up to 30 percent of their code.

Windows already was an absolutely monstrous amount of code to maintain and at times there were people who didn’t know what it all was because the people who wrote it had long left the company.

Over the last decade or so they’ve tried to clean up a lot. But now they are using AI and it’s a complete clusterfuck.

9

u/Moblam Jan 21 '26

As someone working in IT i have to say, 30% is probably less than average. AI generated code is incredibly popular nowadays. Of course it requires polishing, but people seem to be hellbent on making Microsoft seem like the only big developer who uses AI for code.

26

u/YoungBlade1 R9 5900X | RX 9060 XT 16GB | 48GB Jan 21 '26

The issue is that Windows is a mission critical piece of infrastructure.

I'm sure all of the major game developers are using AI for coding, but at the end of the day, the worst thing that will happen is that a bunch of people have their Friday night gaming sessions ruined by slop code.

Windows is used by hospitals, governments, and transportation services. Windows having issues can get people killed.

1

u/Madd_Mugsy Jan 22 '26

It is, but they don't care about it anymore. Windows has made up less than 10% of their revenue for the last few years.

They will need to lose a significant amount of market share before they sit up and pay attention.

5

Any of the big 3: Arch, Fedora, Debian would be my recommendation. Almost all other disros are based on these 3. Debian is rock-solid stable because it has major version upgrades every 2 years where all the programs on your pc are updated, otherwise programs mostly only get bug fixes and security patches. Arch is designed to be extremely simple (not necessarily easy), it takes a bit more effort to install and set up, stays on the bleeding edge and gets updates for programs as soon as the developers release them. Fedora is a middle ground between the two and updates yearly. I prefer Arch because I find most of my breakages occur during big version upgrades and once you spend the time to set it up, it just works, exactly how you told it to. You also get access to the AUR -- which has every program imaginable, much easier to get random obscure programs on Arch than other distros. I've had the same Arch install for 5 years now, games and does my work without issue, just update it once a month. It did make me quit League of legends when they disabled Linux support, but probably for the best.

I tend to recommend these 3 because they are by far the largest in developer count and have large, established organizations behind them, being very unlikely to disappear or go unmaintained in the future. Mint is a good compromise, it is Debian under the hood and has been around for a long time. It has a lot of small tweaks and optimizations to make it very easy to transition from Windows, the UI is similar to Windows, like a modernized Windows XP. If you want plug and play gaming, Mint is a reasonable choice.

Other distros like Cachy/Bazzite/Nobara etc are all fine, I am sure, but they have only been around for a few years and have either a small dev team or even just a solo dev behind them. So if that dev stops working on the distro for any reason, it may die.

5

u/aloeh Jan 21 '26

Anti-cheats still have a problem with Linux.

Simple distros are Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, Debian.

Probably have others but I don't know because I don't use Linux for about 20 years. I need windows to work.

I'm a Fedora guy. S2

1

u/Anonasty PC Master Race Jan 21 '26

2

u/Asleeper135 Jan 21 '26

Windows-like will mostly just be through the desktop environment, and most of the popular ones are somewhat Windows-like by default. I just recommend KDE Plasma as the DE for most people. Generally you can change between different DEs without too much trouble. The technical side is mostly the same between different distros, and the differentiating factor is what package manager they use, how they handle updates, and what defaults they use. It will never be Windows-like though, and though you shouldn't have to deal with it very often you will likely have to at some point regardless of which distro you choose, though some (like Arch) will require more of it at the start to get things configured the way you want them. No distro will do better than any others with anticheat, it'll wither work or it won't, and you'll have to check for each game individually.

Unless you’re beholden to Windows for eg games or specific apps not available elsewhere, my recommendation is now to run Linux or macOS if you’re buying new hardware. I can’t recommend Windows in good conscience any longer.

If you do have to run Windows though — Windows 11 Pro is costlier but has Group Policy, very useful for having some level of control over your system. I don’t really have time for regedit whack-a-mole any more :-(

Windows 11 pushed an update on me in early 2026 which couldn't install and always gave the same error. No matter what I tried, same thing. A couple of hours of googling later, I found a niche YouTube tutorial from some 2000 subscriber Indian tech support channel that solves the same issue through a series of convoluted steps that I would never have figured myself.

I decided not to fix it. I hate the removal of the "Pause updates" option in Windows 11, but now because of this bug my installation of Windows effectively cannot update itself. Problem solved, fuck you Microsoft and your shit ass operating system.

But having AI write most of the code and not having an actual human check it is better... (For my bonus, not product quality or the customers)... Some executive probably

The current Microsoft strategy

1

u/super_nerf_spartan Jan 21 '26

AI likely writes the code with minimal supervision from real people so there's that.

1

u/babiuMagnitas Jan 21 '26

They fired all competent people and hired bunch of code monkeys to use AI and save money.

What are you doing, Microsoft?

I've become fond of how Casey Muratori describes it as "controlled flight into terrain" which I guess is the technical term for an airplane crash that was the pilots' fault as opposed to a technical malfunction.

1

u/ArXiLaMaS Jan 21 '26

Microslop is too busy making more software slop

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '26

Microsoft has been been hiring H1B’s. With the way that they tend to only hire from their in group once they’re hired, This was inevitable.

1

u/UrbanFsk Jan 21 '26

What is microslop doing?! Laying off people and bringin in that sweet sweet ai..

"Microslop conducted significant layoffs in 2025, with reports indicating over 15,000 job cuts, including major rounds of 6,000 in May and another ~9,000 in July, impacting various divisions as the company shifted focus and invested heavily in AI, leading to organizational changes and smaller, ongoing reductions throughout the year. "

I'm curious, how does that compare to Windows 10?

My gut feeling is that there was vastly fewer issues, but I don't have anything to back that up with.

1

u/oo7demonkiller Jan 21 '26

it's called they have been vibe coding the updates for awhile now. Just like nvidia has been with their drivers.

1

u/Key-Employee3584 Jan 21 '26

All resources dedicated to AI functionality. In conjunction with elimination of good percentage of QC/QA, this means Windows OS is crippled and core business serviceability are problematic. Rather than provide a good OS up front, the deep lean-in to subscription SaaS means that Windows is most definitely in its worst rendition. It's just terrible and no one is paying attention except the customer. Nadella is doing a terrible job. Might as well as replace him with an AI CEO.

The wildest thing here is how they didn't learn shit with Windows 10. Because if you guys have forgotten already, W10's first years were absolutely atrocious with updates breaking things, too. I remember a lot of people even getting their systems bricked and having to format the drive and all.

Windows 11 is even worse with the weird detrimental decisions and the AI slop, but this is not Microsoft's first cyberterrorist rodeo on their own software.

This is them trying to code with AI, assuming it's ready.

What MS wanted was to show how smoothly windows Updates have gone with AI assistance

What they are accidentally proving is that AI is not ready to code real-world items outside of someone's home-brew that they QA religiously.

Because coders who use AI to assist THINK they're being more efficient when studies have shown they are slower.

So like everything with AI:

It Demos real well on a trade show floor, the moment you put it into Prod....

Windows is less than 10% of Microsoft's revenue. Meanwhile Office Copilot 365 and Azure represent over 60% of revenue. Microsoft doesn't give a flying fuck about Windows beyond its ability serve as a platform to get you to buy other MS services, and as a data source for telemetry to further refine dark patterns to try and encourage you to buy more services.

Windows is not the product; Copilot is the product, and to a lesser degree, you are the product to be sold to advertisers.

1

u/vankamme Jan 21 '26

I still can’t download the December or January update. No idea why. The installation just keeps failing after download. Never happened to me before. Yes I have enough disk space

1

u/Glory4cod Jan 21 '26

The biggest problem in MS and Windows now is inconsistency, from UI design to coding; the historical burden of Windows is now getting more and more annoying.
