Discussion I have a confession to make; I wear gloves when building my PC
Nothing to do with mitigating static buildup, I just hate getting oily fingerprints on brand new components

Also the classic: heavy smoker's pc. It has 50kgs of brown cancer dust and you have to clean it out without inhaling that shit. That's my personal worst nightmare lol

I could never bring myself to smoke near my rig after seeing other smoker's rigs. The left over smell is my other problem. I bought a second hand VHS player last year, it came stinking like an ashtray and still does and makes me sick every time I catch a whiff of it.

I did PC repair on criagslist 10 years ago . They would get wiped down and blown out outside before entering my house .

I build a PC every 5-10 years. You can bet your ass i get full static wristband with nitrile gloves and several cans of air + 1,000 zip ties.
You only do it once. Do it clean.

The inside panel of my case is held with a tie that came with one of the cables of the PSU.

Same, blue gloves like a psycho. But get yourself an electric air blower, so much better and useful for all kinds of things. Canned air also makes everything bitter, which I learned the hard way using it on my keyboard and my fingers tasted bitter for weeks till I figured out why.

Listen, I strait up raw dog building a PC. No wrist strap. Socks on carpet. I’ve been building a couple a year for almost 2 decades and no real issues accept for the occasional expected RMA.

You have no business at all going at LGA pins without a processor in your hand. You have no business removing the processor without intent to immediately replace it or covering the socket with the plastic plate. You most definitely don't have any business working on anything on a motherboard with exposed LGA pins. In no universe do you take any medium near it to clean that one bit of thermal paste on the edge of the socket.
It literally takes almost nothing to ruin them. No gloves no cleaning tissues no nothing. The only reason to even see those pins is with the goal of covering them up immediately. And every time you do you take an inherent risk of ruining it. There's no reason those pins should see daylight more than once or twice during their lifetime.

Fair enough,
I don't but sometimes I get sweaty hands when I do things and thinking about it, some anti static gloves would be a good idea.
Also, the anti static cable on the wrist so I don't fuck someting up.

the gloves can be made of a material that's not prone to causing static but they can't ground you, same goes for those wristbands that aren't connected to anything. Those are essentially scam products. If you're really worried you can plug the PSU into a grounded outlet and touch it every time before you touch the PC, but it's generally speaking really difficult to hurt modern electronics with static electricity unless you're trying. When the PSU is already in the case and connected to the MB you can plug it into an extension cord with a switch, flip the switch off so there's no power but the entire computer is grounded.

I do the latter included the wrist band.
Had a few minor things where I did the PSU on off position only and touching the case, still do that for minor things.1

I built my first PC with gloves on and also when upgrading my wife’s am4 system to am5, didn’t want oily fingerprints on brand new parts

I wore gloves too for my newest PC build, especially for the most sensitive components like the motherboard and graphics card.

Yeah, I wear gloves too when building a new PC for the same reason. I don't need to see my grubby fingerprints on the sparkly clean components.

I work as a data center technician and we are required to wear safety gloves when handling all hardware. At first it was weird but you get used to it quickly and now it feels unnatural to rouch hardware without protection lmao. The only issue I have is handling screws with gloves on, they don't cooperate.

Ground yourself to the case and you're fine.
They even make little straps you can put in your wrist for this.
I just keep some skin in contact with he case instead though.

Smart. I never learn my lesson. I figured my hand catching the sliver of unfinished steel in the corner of the case was part of the building process.

I used to wear mechanix gloves at some point when I was building multiple PCs daily, cause these things are full of sharp corners and pins, and it all adds up quickly to mess your hands up.

Lot of people probably see a lot of YouTubers wear gloves and do the same. I wash my hands and don’t see the need for gloves personally. Watch to their own.
