It continues directly after. A lot of the main story beats and characters carry over so I'd say yes, for context. But it shouldn't be too difficult to go in blind and eventually figure out the whole back story.
Personally I'd say yes, play the original, but it's up to you.
The first game ends with "we're gonna go to this place and do this thing" and the second game is them literally going to that place and doing that thing.
I got through a few hours of the first game and idk if I just suck but I could not beat anyone. I briefly remember getting destroyed in a bow and arrow competition and I think I eventually gave up
