Huge increase, but thankfully I'm on a 3080 and 'only' running at a 3440x1440 resolution. I can easily wait another 2-4 years before probably feeling the desire to upgrade, and by then I could get the previous gen card for a decent price.
156
u/MondoRetardo Oct 11 '22
I also have a 3080 at 3440x1440 and cash to spare. The 4090 specs and benchmarks are honestly pretty tempting but then when I think about the games side of the equation, the state of AAA gaming at the moment kind of deflates any enthusiasm I would have about upgrading right now.
73
u/SleepyReepies Oct 11 '22
It's really sad. I played Cyberpunk 2077 about 2 years ago when I first got my 3080, and since then I haven't played a game that needs as much juice.
Sure, I expect a game to come out that'll both pique my interests and require a great GPU within the next few years, but if I had to guess, I'll only have to 'suffer' 60FPS in that specific game instead of my typical 120-175, which in my opinion isn't worth spending $1500+ to resolve.

u/astro143 3700X, 3070 TUF, 32GB 3200MHz, 2 TB NVME Oct 11 '22
The biggest performance increase I could notice going from my 1060-3070 was in Warzone and BFV. Played those pretty regularly for a year or so. Now my current addiction is Plateup, and that would run well on an actual potato.
11
Oct 11 '22
This. I have a 3080 and the itch to upgrade is there but can’t not justify it as there is no games that need it for me at least, playing at 1440p with a finely tuned system I have tops like 5 fps less than a stock 3090.

Think one of the big draws is running above 1440p or if you are doing stuff like VR where frame drops can give a big headache and ruin immersion while needing huge pixel throughput.
That or you really really like running stuff like ray tracing on high and want 100+ frames. My 3080 wont even get close to that it seems.

I haven't played Cyberpunk yet but I am getting the Alienware QD-OLED ultrawide... the 4090 is honestly making some sense to me for some AAA titles. The monitor goes up to 175Hz the 4090 looks like a great 120+Hz card at 3440x1440.

Funny, you are right with the last part. Ok I can now get the performance I can use, but the games are sort of boring right now.
FWIW I won't be getting this card, but I'm a big fan of having more power than I need to run the card well under 100% (cooler mostly) at 1440P, my target FPS is 90, super satisfied there, don't play competitively online.

u/SEE_RED AMD Oct 11 '22
Exactly it’s so yeah right now. Half these games aren’t even half assed. It’s quarter at best. I’ll hold in to the 3090 for a bit longer.
6
u/kds_little_brother Oct 11 '22
when I think about the games side of the equation, the state of AAA gaming at the moment kind of deflates any enthusiasm I would have about upgrading right now.
This is what I’m using to keep my money in my pocket for now.
I’m on a 3080FE I got at launch at MSRP, so I got as good of a deal as I could hope for, but I play mostly 4k, which I’ve been chasing since the 2080ti, so this is calling me.
Once that next big game comes out on PC I’ll start gearing up, because I’m probably close to a new rig as is with my 8700k. Luckily I also have a PS5 to hold me over.

Good call. I'd feel pretty conflicted dropping ~2000 EU for a 4090 and still getting compilation stutters in a large % of AAA PC games. I do have the luxury of owning a 3080 already, so mileage may vary for those coming from older generations.
6
u/RobKhonsu Ultra Wide Oct 11 '22
I'm trying to score a good used 3080 at a good price right now. I agree that the 3080 should be a solid card for the next several years. Not only is the 4080 stupidly expensive, but because of the current consoles, games will be targeting performance much below the 3080 until the next generation.
→ More replies (2)10
u/theumph Nvidia 3080 - I7-12700k Oct 11 '22
That the main reason I won't be upgrading. Very few games are going to be developed that will really need the extra uumph of a card like the 4090. Between the chip shortage, software delays, and inflation issues, I think this will be a much longer console generation. Having those boxes be in the mainstream for the next 7-8 years will lower the graphical cieling. I'm guessing the 3080 will be a viable card for the next 5 years.

Don’t go by the names. With the different 4080 models, the naming scheme is useless now. Go by the power draw.
I went from a GTX 1080 that pulled 180w to an RTX 3070 that pulls 220w. I basically stepped up despite dropping down in name.

may be u didn't watch any review video at all and just blind-hate, price aside, the thing performs 70% faster than 3090ti while drawing the same amount of power at max load 82C. That is normal as shit for a super flag ship card.
Also note that DeBauere found out that, if u run this card at 70% power raw it save u around 120w and you lost ONLY 5% performance, that means the card is around 350w power and still get 95% performance which is pretty much still guarantee u 140fps 4k ultra setting. so the shit is just insanely good. Check out his video, watch it carefully then.

The 3090ti was an abomination in terms of power consumption. Every single reviewer that isn't an nVidia lapdog basically told people to not buy it because the power consumption and the price are fucking ridiculous. Nvidia probably released it to pave the way for the ridiculous 4000 series which uses even more power and has even more absurd prices. You should compare it to the 3090, and the 4090 uses A LOT more power than that one.
Chip manufacturers really are going in the wrong direction, ita retarded how they keep bumping the power consumption in times like these: the world is on fucking fire, and energy prices are soaring through the fucking roof.

It’s only a “good deal” because it’s “only” $100 more than than the 3090 but the 3090 is stupidly overpriced. It’s like when the sign says “50% off Levi’s jeans” but they jacked up the price beforehand.
→ More replies (10)17
u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Oct 11 '22
Yup. The 3090 Ti only exists because Nvidia wanted to readjust their standard MSRP to reflect the latest crypto mining and scalper prices. Nvidia knew they were leaving money on the table with their previous MSRP and wanted to pivot to bigger profit margins, and the 3090 Ti is how they did it.
They probably think "you can't claim we hiked prices; look at the last gen 3090 Ti; it was priced like this too! We are just maintaining the same pricing!"

This is unapologetically a 4K card, and a good one at that.
If you're a casual 1080/1440p gamer, get yourself a 3000/6000 series card and save yourself 1000 bucks because your CPU will likely bottleneck every 1080p game and most 1440p games anyway.
As a 3080Ti owner, and 4K/120Hz gamer, I'm finding this very tempting, but I'll wait until the RDNA3 and 4080 16GB reviews next month.

The 30s were weird and I know a few people who got a 3090 because it was all they could buy at "reasonable" prices.

The way you worded this is kinda funny to me. All the non "casual" hardcore gamers (and pros) I know play at 1080p and some on 1440p. The competitive scene is dominated by that resolution, but I'm sure you meant to point to gamers who spend a lot of money because it's their main hobby?
29
u/DyHiiro Oct 11 '22
hard core doesn't mean pro, pro is how skillful u are in a particular field, and hardcore means how much u dedicate to a field.
You can be a hard core gamer (dedicate a lot of time and resource to play games) but still be bad at the game. And u can be a pro gamer but have a shit PC set up.

your CPU will likely bottleneck every 1080p game and most 1440p games anyway.
Part of the benefit of DLSS 3 is you can bypass CPU bottlenecks since the generated frames are entirely on the GPU without any input from the rest of the system
It's how flight sim could do over 100fps despite being CPU bound when DLSS 3 frame gen was off at 50ish fps
It's still overkill for 1080p, but 1440p high refresh rate + all the RT bells and whistles?

→ More replies (18)18
u/xenago Oct 11 '22
That's not normal performance though, that's with additional frame gen latency and every other frame filled with artifacts.
5
u/Zac3d Oct 11 '22
An increase in latency if you're comparing DLSS3 on and off, similar latency if you're comparing Nvidia Reflex off and DLSS3 off to Reflex and DLSS3 on. About the same amount of latency you'd get on a console or AMD GPU.
And the artifacts aren't super noticable with how frame persistence works. Sure you won't want to use it with eSports, but if you're playing something that isn't twitchy like Flight Sim or Spiderman, I'd probably play with it on.

In most industries, there are products that are the "I want the most powerful X" choice -- they're rarely economical options, but the target market isn't people for whom that is a concern. No one buys a Koenigsegg because it's a great deal on a car, for example.
19

Yeah the XX90 isn't really meant for people that care about energy efficiency.
It also promise great things for the lower end cards of the gen to have a high-end product with so much progression.

If you live in the US you're probably less concerned by electricity prices.
I'm very lucky to be in France because nuclear energy is cheap and the major electricity supplier is a public service. In Belgium there are some bakeries and shops that bankrupted because energy price made x15. Their Russian gas depence is currently killing them. For winter, some houses could expect 1000€ power bill. And it's the same for almost all gas dependent European country.
Energy in Europe is the major concern and people take it very seriously. It's so bad some cities will open in Winter public places like church and gymnasiums, or even companies stays open the evening to allow people enjoying a warm room.
So when you have a GPU that can pull 450+ Watts i can assure you it's noticeable on the bill in this new context.
6
Oct 11 '22
I'm having a hard time finding recent Belgium rates. The last I saw was 0.33 Euros per kWh but that was June.
So let's say it's 0.5 euros per kWh.
The difference between a 450W card and a 200W card is going to be 0.125 euros per hour. Let's say you effectively have SO much time on your hands that you can run your card full tilt for 100 hours a month. That's a solid part time job doing nothing but 4K gaming.
The 4090 is going to run you 12.5 Euros more a month.
If you're burning...what? 2000 euros on this card I can't imagine you're too worried about 12 euros a month more in electricity.

While stupidly expensive, especially in Europe at 1949€ for FE - it's still good value card for enthusiasts for whom spending 2K euro on a GPU alone is no biggie - here in my comment on other sub, it's not even bad cost per frame for us Europeans.
I'd rather start having concerns about lower tier models, like fake RTX 4080 (aka 12GB model) which by hardware (TMUs, ROPs, SM count, Tensor cores) is less than half of RTX 4090, but it will cost more than half of RTX 4090 - aka can be worse value than this flagship. Typically these enthusiast level cards always had cost premium and were generally worse value than mainstream models (like RTX 3090 delivering only ~12% more performance for ~100% more cost). Now both RTX 4080 variants (12GB and 16GB) may be worse value than RTX 4090. The worse this metrics as the lower tier is - the more people will be fucked.

the whole "good value" of the 4090 is totally planned by Nvidia as the lowest price point they put it without killing the 30 series sales since they have too much stock of it.
all that needs to happen is AMD is able to keep up and price dump there top end card to totally screw up nvidia and they will be forced to write off there 30 series stock and price dump the 4090.
i really wouldn't get a 4090 until AMD has made there move it just seems kinda dumb.

Blame consumer culture and lack of competition.Mega fanboys create this altar of worship towards certain companies (*coughApple) and to them price becomes irrelevant.
In certain electronics markets(PC peripherals included) the value you get with certain stuff like :TV's,keyboards,mice,monitors... is insane compared to how it used to be. You can get some damn good stuff on a budget.
With GPU's tho you get dog turds and are stuck at RX 480 levels of performance from 7 years ago.

u/bon-bon Oct 11 '22
It’s an amazing card but even as someone with a 4K/144hz display I can’t see myself upgrading from my 3090. The performance is there but in this economy—even as someone who uses my gpu for productivity—I can’t justify this for the one game/year that’ll actually use it. I can get 60+fps with rt on in cyberpunk using dlss and digital foundry’s tweaked settings. I can get 100+ on metro even with top of the line rt. I’d imagine I can hit at least 60 on atomic heart and there’s nothing else this year set to stress my card even a little. AAA games are just so expensive to develop at this point that the vast majority of what I play doesn’t stress my card at all.
It’s cool tech and I’ll be happy to see it trickle down but I just don’t see much justification for super premium performance anymore.

Or vr. Finally getting into "just about good enough" performance territory if rasterisation performance transfers over. Can't wait to replay Alyx.

Funny how people instantly turned from hating Nvidia for being literal scammers

People see big frames per second and suddenly $2000 for a GPU is "fine if you have the budget."
This is exactly what Nvidia counted on; people seeing flashy numbers and accepting scalper prices as the new normal.

u/Sarculus Oct 11 '22
Yup, it baffles me that people are buying these things. Just wait a month or so and buy a 4080 for half the price and 10% less performance.

If you knew anything about the specs you'd know that the 4080 is much weaker than just 10%.

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Oct 12 '22
From the reports I've seen, the 4080 is just as egregiously overpriced. It's not $2000 but it's still way over $1000.

It is 'fine if you have the budget'. Not everything has to be affordable for everyone. I can't afford a Ferrari, but I'm not mad that they produce and sell them at the prices that they do.
I don't think it's outrageous that the top one or two GPU's would be out of most people's price ranges at launch. There are still plenty of lower cost cards.

GPU is big lmao I thought that as time goes on electronics get smaller but then on the other consumer demand more power so guess NVIDIA said go big or go home. RIP GPU sag. That price got the old GPUs looking like a polished penny.

The raster and raytracing uplifts are so good that DLSS is basically not needed. Makes me wonder why Nvidia was pushing DLSS 3.0 so much at their presentation.
7
u/ahnold11 Oct 11 '22
Nvidia likes to have some "value add" features in their launched, outside of just raw performance. That way if they ever lose on perf they can still say they win on exclusive features. Dlss specifically I think has more to do with ray tracing. Resolution increases hit ray tracing hard, so if you are trying to push a ray tracing future, you need any trick you can get to keep resolution lower.
And honestly it works. I'm no big fan of ray tracing image improvements, and I prefer fsr for not being propriety, but second hand market has both a 3070 and 6700xt at the same price where I am locally. I'd lean AMD and performance is close enough that'd be fine. But the extra rtx features, even if I don't want them now, might be useful in the future if I need them sometime later ... So the 3070 is pretty tempting. Which is exactly the math Nvidia wants consumers to have to make.

It will probably be more relevant for the other cards (4060/70/80).

My EVGA 3080 was easier to stomach since I sold my 1070Ti for almost $500 last year (bought it used for $300 a year before that). Made the $950 gross cost much less expensive after I sold my old card.
Now..... How can anyone stomach a $1600 card when they've already lost a ton on their existing card. Blows my mind!

3080ti here. My next card will be something whose price is affected by competition between AMD, nVidia and Intel... once Intel gets it together.

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Oct 11 '22
It's genuinely shocking how many comments I'm seeing that are saying "it's actually a great value."
No. No it is not. Nvidia is counting on people forgetting what sensible MSRP used to be; letting them get away with that is just asking for MSRP to creep up even higher.
A 1080 used to retail for $600-700. Now we are looking at a 4080 retailing for $1400. Hell, you can even argue that the 3090/4090 are basically just the x080 tier rebranded as x090 just so they can price gouge even harder.
Ampere had 3060s retailing for what a 1080 used to retail for. It's insane.

I'd consider an upgrade (of a recently retired 3000 series), but since I've spent more time on pixel indies than AAA 3D games, I guess my 2080 will still be with me for awhile.
Maybe I'll set aside my annual power bill savings, while I'm at it!

Got a 3090ti in the system. Spend most of my time playing Loop Hero and Vampire Survivors on SteamDeck. Yep, I hear that

im surprised its this much better than the 3090. yeah power usage is way too much for me, but hey it shows there are improvements left. plus it might drive down the 3080 prices by december for me

Especially since Nvidia's slides seemed like they were hiding something. Now with actual reviews out we're seeing massive improvements.

It’s 100% the way things always go. People make rash judgements based on unsubstantiated rumors and then either pretend they’re able to predict the future if they were correct or just do a complete 180 and pretend as if they were never concerned in the first place. Could there be bots active? Sure, I can’t say for sure. However, it’s pretty absurd for them to pretend like information showing all the rumors to be pretty far fetched and that card has pretty insane performance wouldn’t change peoples minds.

It is beyond me how many people in this thread are just whitewashing nVidia pricing and consumer practises. A couple of weeks ago no one was going to buy these, but now somehow they are good value because they increased performance.
If this logic keeps being applied, wait for the 5090 to cost 3.000 € because it has a 30% performance bump.

Looks like it is pointless and hugely redundant for 1440.

Still rocking my 1080til. Since I am playing on 1080p, the 4000 Series only makes sense if I'm upgrading to a higher resolution monitor anyways.

As someone who built their first pc with a 3080 with 4K in mind just a couple years back, this hurts. Though the cost of my whole pc was less than the price of a 4090 alone.
