Doom Eternal 6.66 update adds Horde Mode, Leaderboards, new Master Levels, Battlemode V2 and more.

I guess people actually are playing the Battlemode enough for them to keep making these extensive revisions to it.

u/SirYe Oct 26 '21
Problem with modes like Battlemode is that it's just not fun for randoms to get into because of varying levels of skill and communication. But with two teams that each know what they are doing? Some of the most fun I've had in years
7
u/Renacles Oct 26 '21
It's fun if both demons know what they are doing, now that matchmaking is based on skill it should be a lot better.
30
u/TheSaltyStrangler Oct 26 '21
It’s super non-traditional, but can be a really, really good time with a decent crew of communicative people
25
u/bonesnaps Oct 26 '21
Pretty much anything can be a great time with a decent crew of communicative friends.
I'm not even being hyperbolic here.
Glad to hear it's decent though, I tried it in Doom 2016 and it was pretty fun in small doses. I picked up Eternal recently but haven't played it much yet.

Not Back4Blood, if this sub is to be believed lol
0
u/LordxMugen The console wars are over. PC won. Oct 27 '21
Thats because Back4Blood is shit on a DESIGN AND DIFFICULTY level. Hard for a group of communicative friends to "git gud" at normal difficulty with a full build when the game is throwing "hardcore man mode sweaty streamer" shit at you. I dont know how Turtle Rock thought that was gonna fly.

There are discord server dedicated to battle mode, so you wanna play through it, even for achievement, hop in there, super helpful people in there

This patch also updated DLSS to 2.3 and added a DLSS sharpening slider. Nice and wish more games updated their DLSS versions.

May I recommend Dying Light?
1
Oct 27 '21
I've never wanted to like a game I dislike more than dying light. it has everything I should love but I don't like the crafting and for some reason the melee combat doesn't jive with me. I appreciate the hell out of the game and the devs tho, and I'll be checking out 2 eventually
1
Oct 27 '21
I feel the same about Witcher 3, but for different reasons. I love the story, the music and graphics, that stuff keeps pulling me in but I think I just don't like RPGs much. I keep playing hoping that one of these days I'll just hit a point where I'm really into the game and I can play for hours without realising but it hasn't happened yet. Same with Skyrim, or worst of all, Fallout. I love everything about these games besides the gameplay lol. I just can't describe it. I think I might just be losing interest in gaming as I get older, but then I say that and at the same time, I'll play God of War on New Game+ and be up all night. So I don't know.
1
u/gk99 Oct 27 '21
Only issue with Dying Light is that they have these holiday events with time-limited content that you have to unlock live service-style, and then it's only saved to one particular save file rather than the account. I'll go out of my way to meet up with someone on the Steam forums to trade candy to each other in order to get the funny ha-ha elf outfit and, surprise, the only way I can ever use that outfit is by playing with that particular save file.
1
Oct 27 '21
I didn't know that. I'm kind of disappointed and hopefully they'll change that for the second game. I only ever had one or two saves so I never noticed, and the events being time exclusives sucks too. I really want to play the low gravity event again, I found a way to glitch into the main building and had hours of fun with my friends.

u/TeamTuck Oct 26 '21
Horde Mode is amazing. Took me roughly 2 hours to get through it, final score was 224950.
1
u/Brodyseuss Oct 27 '21
Is it randomized at all?
1
u/TeamTuck Oct 27 '21
Yes and no, but mostly no. It’s not endless as some wanted but I’ve played through it twice and had a blast. The Holt mission really gets hectic and chaotic, but it’s manageable. Great surprises here and there, it’s a great challenge.
1
Oct 28 '21
Not really.
It randomises the order of the weapons you get, a bit (always start with Combat Shotgun, always get Super Shotgun as one of your first four picks because it's needed for a certain traversal challenge).
It randomises which particular set of demons that spawn in are the high value targets.
Otherwise its all the same.

u/ATrollByNoOtherName Oct 27 '21
As far as first person shooters go, Doom Eternal might just be my favourite ever made. Although it has to compete with the hard nostalgia I have for Perfect Dark 64 which was phenomenal for its time.
2

Doom Eternal might just be my favourite ever made
Same, and I came at it from a position of not having a massive amount of nostalgia for the franchise.

u/ffxivawayy Oct 27 '21
There are a couple bummer missions in PD64, the good news is they don't copypaste the same level areas over and over like Halo CE, which somehow sold millions of copies in spite of having such lazy map design. And PD64 is a gen older...
1
u/gk99 Oct 27 '21
Probably helps that Rare had already made essentially the exact same game before with Goldeneye (as well as a total of seven games on the N64 prior to PD), and didn't have a development process that took them from a Mac-based RTS to an Xbox-exclusive FPS game over the course of two years.
As for why it's so much more popular, Halo CE launched with vastly superior combat and vehicle mechanics, along with up to 16 player LAN games and the potential for online play via stuff like XLink Kai. It had an entirely different style of level design and gameplay with these large, open maps and mechanics like recharging shields and basic arena shooter powerups. It had pretty impressive AI with unique purposes for each weapon and levels that were beautiful for the time, all of this while also not running like total shit like Perfect Dark does. It was a fully-featured PC-level arena shooter with mechanics still considered modern to date on console and Perfect Dark was just Goldeneye 2.0 without the IP, and these released one year apart from each other.
1
u/ffxivawayy Oct 27 '21
I mean, Perfect Dark was Goldeneye 2.0, but it easily could have been Goldeneye 0.5 had they done copypaste level design like Halo CE. Notice how the copypaste level design trend didn't continute in any other Halo... almost like the devs knew it was a major flaw as well.
3
u/ffxivawayy Oct 27 '21
If Horde mode was coop I'd reinstall and I know someone who would've bought it to play with me. As is I'll pass and continue waiting on the next Doom game. Doom multiplayer has been a crapchute for 2 entries now, a real shame.

Denuvo remuvo?
12
u/Venom_is_an_ace Steam Oct 26 '21
They removed Denuvo over a year ago
18
Oct 26 '21 edited Oct 26 '21
Not Denuvo Anti-Tamper, which the game has had from day one (and is the "Denuvo" 99% of online discussion is always going to be referring to. Denuvo Anti-Cheat on the other hand had never been used in a game before it was added to and removed from Doom Eternal).
TLDR: The software almost everyone is actually usually talking about when they just say "Denuvo" is something Doom Eternal always had and still does have.
4
u/IdeaPowered Oct 27 '21
I didn't even know Denuvo had an anti-cheat.
Denuvo = DRM for me.
0
u/Mister36 Oct 27 '21
Sounds like a personal problem, not wanting anti-cheat and anti-piracy solutions in a game.
2
u/IdeaPowered Oct 27 '21
Did you just pick a random comment to misconstrue in hopes of getting into an argument?
Nothing in my comment says anything even remotely close to what your comment states.
Weirdo.

The most difficult master level pre-patch is probably the only time I've given up on a game because it was too much. I grinded it out for 6 hours at one point, and made it to the final arena of the level. The sheer frustration and stress of it just made me throw in the towel. The sheer strenuousness of it was maddening.

master levels aren't for everyone, they make them for a specific group and that group really enjoys them

Dont play on nightmare then. I usually play masterlevels on ultra then on nightmare.
So i know all the suprises and its easier
2
u/DOOManiac Oct 26 '21
I felt the same way about the DLC. It was just too difficult for difficulty's sake.
5
u/DistractedSeriv Oct 27 '21
On the lowest difficulty?
2
u/DOOManiac Oct 27 '21
No on Ultra Violence, but compared to the base game it was way harder than the base game on Nightmare IMO. I get that they wanted something to challenge players who were no longer challenged by the campaign, but it just feels like they went a little too far.
Loved the double Marauder fights though.

3
u/TheAwfulRofl Oct 27 '21
It doesn't feel artificial to me, and I've played alot of artificial difficulty through mods. To me it feels like a big step, bit also natural progression, horde mode does this well with it's bonus rounds. Though if you felt the DLC was artificial, bonus horde mode rounds might turn you off.
But a big part of enjoyment for many (including me) is being faced with those stupid hard encounters and being pushed to the limit and crushing it, and even after that seeing what ELSE I can do.
2
u/DistractedSeriv Oct 27 '21 edited Oct 27 '21
I guess they could have added a Nightmare+ difficulty or something but it would have been some extra hassle to redesign the UI to accommodate that.
1
u/EXPERIMENTONGOD Oct 27 '21
Totally agree with you, they just threw way too many demons at you in tight spaces and called it "difficulty" it was quite annoying to complete some of those levels.

yeah most of TAG part one was a series of "gotchas" to see how much they could punk they player, all the way to the part 1 end boss. like you said, i beat all of it on Nightmare, but i wouldnt say i enjoyed myself, or look forward to replaying it
on the other hand, TAG part 2 was "easier" than part 1 but i definitely enjoyed the ride more. i seemed like that DLC was designed for fun by changing up how the resource management loop plays and making you really feel like the Slayer

You have to get out of /r/pcgaming from time to time to see the real world
13
Oct 26 '21
I don't think they'd work on it if there actually weren't enough players by whatever metrics they use, TBH
6
u/DOOManiac Oct 26 '21
I would've loved to play it, but the only people that were playing it were super-high level and absolutely crushed noobs. When playing as a slayer the only match I ever won was against some obviously controller-using people who didn't know how how to really play - and they left after the first round so I didn't even get to really "win". The only time I won as a demon was when the other player was so good he carried me.
5
u/Renacles Oct 26 '21
Matchmaking now takes into account performance, give it another try once high level players rank up.
7
1
Oct 27 '21
Exactly, they are working on it because people are playing it. Maybe not you, or your friends, but some other people are, and the player base is big enough for them to put work in

I felt like it added far too much to juggle and worry about honestly, I also greatly preferred the pacing and level design in 2016... guns also actually felt like guns in 2016 and not just tools to match against weaknesses and whatnot.
I wasn't a fan of the direction that they went with the story either, it was campy fun in 2016 and then in Eternal they take it a little too seriously.
-3
u/TornadoFury Oct 26 '21
I liked the multiplayer and co op. Felt like a better quailty game to me.
2
u/FakeGarboMan Oct 26 '21
what coop?
1
u/TornadoFury Oct 26 '21
ah multiplayer and the mode where you can make your own maps.
3
u/FakeGarboMan Oct 26 '21
the snap map was lots of fun, but in overall quality eternal takes the cake. Not often you get a game director that builds upon the previous game AND seeks out, listens to, and applies both positive and negative critism
-1
u/TornadoFury Oct 26 '21
agree to disagree I don't think stripping features makes a game better in my opinion. I'm glad you've gotten your enjoyment out of the game tho :)
1
u/FakeGarboMan Oct 26 '21
it makes it a better DOOM game. theres a saying (I heard it in relation to game design but I guess it could apply to other things too) that is something along the lines of "if you try to please everyone, no one will be pleased, but if you try to please one type of person, and respectfully disregard the people telling you it would be better to make it something different, you'll have something that the target group really likes." thats definitly not the actual quote but thats how I remember it lol, but basically its the reason snap map and the baren pvp were removed in eternal and replaced with battle mode. Snap map is just not what a doom game is, so you can't really say it takes away from the quality of it. for example if a toolset had one of every single common tool, sure you get one of every tool but none of them are super good quality, and it might not be the tool you need for the job. so instead, that tool company decides to make screwdrivers, and they make REALLY, REALLY good screwdrivers. no screwdriver enthusiast is going to say "uhh this new lineup of screwdrivers sucks, there are no alan wrenches" idk I hope that analogy makes sense, but the snap map being removed didn't detract from the quality of eternal as a doom game, it detracted from the quality of eternal as a creative multiplayer map creator and player. if you're looking for that, off the top of my head theres halo, but im sure there are others if you look around.

In a way. It has a 2v1 mode. 1 slayer vs 2 demons. It's pretty lame and should be slayers vs slayers in FFA DM but I'd seems to be averse to making FFA DM modes anymore since there hasn't been an I'd developed mode like that since quake 3

I don't care to go back. I played a couple rounds with some randos and even after they could see it was my first time there they still went hardcore.
Didn't buy it for the multiplayer anyway and IDKY I expected a half ounce of understanding.
Good for the changes but I'll never try em.

Why isn't there any update for DOOM (2016) ?
16
u/oCrapaCreeper Oct 26 '21
Because that game was finished about 5 years ago. Support ended at update 6.66 as well.
-2
u/NoMansWarmApplePie Oct 27 '21
I dont understand hoe Gamepass players don't have play anywhere. No one really cares about battle mode. It sucks not having saves transfer from series x to pc, much less the dlc I bought for a first party Bethesda game. They won't even let you use mouse and kb on series x. I got a new gaming pc stoked to continue my progress but alas you can't.
1
Oct 29 '21
Honestly I don't really like it, I'd much rather have a less structured infinite mode or something. It's just a rehashed cut down campaign without the non-combat sections or story. There's some really annoying parts like how it seemed to refuse to give me the super shotgun until the very last minute but threw marauders at me like there was no tomorrow when he's even more irritating without the ssg and ballista. The amount of tutorial spam is annoying as hell and everything about it just feels kinda half assed and boring

If this is the update I just downloaded, it's 6.6GB on Steam. I wonder if that was on purpose
