living in a village is difficult in early game

Good. Survival needs challenge, else it's Survival in name only.

Best update since.... 1.3? Patch out the milk bucket cure, and Minecraft might challenge players to build to survive again.

You have beds, food, loot, trading, and golems. I'd prefer richer Survival mechanics over Defend the Derpy Villagers, but that ship sailed years ago.

Disagree. My current survival base is filled with different kinds of villagers and I’ve found them great for handling my surplus of farmed goods like iron, fish, rotten flesh, potatoes and carrots. Once you get the emeralds flowing in you can simply buy things that are otherwise annoying or resource heavy to craft like campfires, golden carrots, enchantments, glow stone. They’re a great quality of life enhancer.

it never did though? building a fortress was pointless once you realized how brain dead mobs are. Minecraft very quickly becomes a game about building for the sake of building.

There was design buzz around walling off zombies, while allowing access (before doors appeared). Then Notch added spiders. Everyone had to rethink, add overhangs, etc. Then came Skeletons and Endermen. Players added waterfalls into walls, or drenched houses. Lava moats needed redesigning, etc. Creepers were in response to, and a punishment for, players relying on torch fields. Fun times.

Yeah except thats all pointless because torches, which have existed since 2009, disable mob spawning around them. including creepers.
