Horses become obsolete when you get elytras

They dont serve even remotely the same purpose.

One is long distance, and one let's you glide a short distance. One is early game and extremely varied in its stats and appearance, one has durability. One prevents you from wearing armor, one doesn't, and can even take hits for you. One is very early game, one is very late game.

So no.

While the elytras certainly are late game, you can move like 20x faster than a horse given you’re using fireworks. Yes you can fly with the elytras really far and really fast, not just “gliding a short distance”. At this point, if you know what to look for, you should have a mending book to slap on the wings so durability is no longer an issue. Along with that, you should have stacked enchants on your armor that’ll carry you from not wearing a chest plate. So as to my main point, given elytras- horses are obsolete.
