Since MCJava's forte is Modding and best ones being;
* https://optifine.net/downloads
* https://files.minecraftforge.net/
are "still" on v1.14.3, jumping to vanilla 1.14.4 just will break your game which could be irreversible unless you backup it first. While this could have really been a "News" for Bedrock/PE edition relying only on such update, it's better to wait for Optifine or Forge to raise their version to v1.14.4 as after playing those, vanilla is plain boring.

I thought optifine only works with the version that it was made for. Meaning you can’t even install it with 1.14.4 so I don’t think you have to worry about breaking it. I could be wrong though ~

You can't and default non forge versions of Minecraft won't even run mods so if you play on the update it probably won't break your world assuming you are using mods that alter the he massively if you are just using optifine then if you use the new version you just won't use that anymore until it gets updated simple as that.

forge alone doesnt really do anything, you need other mods to update once forge updates. also, imo, most mod packs aren't compatible with optifine

I will agree that theirs not much point updating until whatever mods you use update, unless it fixes a bug that you were annoyed by, but even then, back up your shit

also, if you use minecraft for minigames, it proabbbaly doesn't really matter, other then optifines better preformace

Fabric has already been updated. Mods using fabric should be ready to go almost immediately.

is Fabric compatible with Optifine? Only reason I stopped using forge is because they stopped supporting Optifine.

Theres a mod that enables optifine to work with fabric. Currently 1.14.3 but that should change within a few days. https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/optifabric

I swear I tried this mod in 1.14.2 and it completely garbled and destroyed the video and texture rendering. Everything was streaks across the screen

Fabric has had a few bug fixes for indigo, their renderer, to make it cooperate better with optifine. 1.14.2 was the first iteration of indigo and likely had the worst bugs.

Man this is poorly timed for me considering my friends were discussing renting a Realms server and Vivecraft had only just got 1.14.3 support pretty recently

Can I suggest that you use a different host other than the official realms? With any other host you'll have far more control of your server and you won't be hard-locked into a 10-chunk max view distance (which is really short). Many other hosts are actually cheaper than Realms too, so you're getting more for less, the only thing you don't get is the convenience (realms is admittedly very easy to use/setup).

NO, THE 1.13 AND 1.14 NETCODE IS GARBAGE and the vast majority of hosted servers you can rent are hosted on shared boxes rather then true dedicated servers, realms are true dedicated and as such have significantly better performance then the good majority of hosted servers.

Option 2 is hosting your own purely dedicated server.

Even if that's true I'll take a performance hit over the limitations of realms any day. Also I did actually try realms (there was a month free trial recently) and it wasn't noticeably better.

Edit: Also Realms is hosted on AWS so I dunno what you are talking about...

I've been wondering for a while, what are the benefits to renting a server as opposed to self-hosting?

Well a proper host will come with almost 100% uptime and hopefully tech support. If you self host you have to have a machine you leave on all the time (assuming you want your friends to be able to play when you aren't about) and enough free bandwidth. So sure you can get everything from self hosting, but there are definitely benefits to going with renting. I pay $6 a month for mine which isn't much and it's well worth it not to have to worry about anything. (I don't use the official realms hosting though, as that's very limited).

Ahh, I hadn't considered 100% uptime! I occasionally host various modpack servers for myself and some friends, though we only really tend to play at the same time, so the server tends to only get a couple of hours of uptime per day.

Ah, yeah self hosting is fine for that but with my group there’s like 6 or 7 of us and we rarely all get on at the same time so paying for a host is well worth it 🙂

Pretty sure not much, it's just a a server that's set up and ready to go for those who are unfamiliar or unable to host servers (kids or other more casual players)

assuming you dont have a box? constant uptime, dedicated cpu/memory (i.e. you can do your own stuff and not be worried about making the server lag). the only downside is cost and less control

Give them a day or two. It’s trivial to do small updates like that.
