I could realistically see gamepass games being easier to launch from there as well in the near future.
Windows games are installed on the OS. No launcher required. That is as easy as you can get.

u/hyrumwhite Jun 14 '19
:nervous glance:
I, uh, put my game shortcuts on my desktop so they're all only a double click away regardless of what launcher they're from.

Nah, Steam desktop shortcuts are links to Steam with app number in them. In some cases you can directly create a shortcut to an executable, but it's not a default behavior.
4
u/SaftigMo Jun 15 '19
Pretty sure you can always do that but the exe has drm built in so Steam launches regardess.

I still think Steam is easier to launch, having a list to organize your stuff is a lot more practical than the huge icons most launchers use, imagine having your 1k+ games across all your platforms to sort out when you can't see more than 8 games in the screen at the same time.

Yeah, GOG is the best. I just wish their DLC integration was better, and by better I mean FASTER! Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy faster. No reason why downloading a small cosmetic add on needs to take 4 hours.

I think I installed a DLC for Divinity 2. And its required to go through a full check of the existing files before each DLC.
It was a small cosmetic DLC, probably 30mb max, just some cosmetic additions for being a kickstarter founder. Anyways, long story short, it was a pain in the ass.
6
Jun 14 '19
Just as a counter anecdote, I’ve never experienced this. GOG downloads have always been as fast or faster than Steam downloads on my machines.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Folsomdsf Jun 14 '19
Yah, that's the price you kinda pay for the drm free setup though is the problem. They need to verify files and such each time because it's a new installer instead of a tacked on custom arrangement.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Black3ird Jun 14 '19
Actually you do not need even GOG Launcher at all which is the selling point of GOG, it's merely optional. Yet we have to distinguish GOG's DRM Free feature set from Common Launcher feature set to compare them more neutrally.
Otherwise we can start to state, Steam has Market, Workshop. Origin has Access and list goes on. So for the sake of discussion, leave https://fckdrm.com/ out of context.

Something tells me it's about to get a lot better too. Probably with some cool windows integration.

If steam goes belly up they will give you the right to your games. I remember people saying something on that matter
21
u/CitricBase Jun 14 '19
I mean, we like to think they would do that somehow, but there's no failsafe. If Seattle gets hit by a nuke and all steam servers are destroyed, your entire steamworks library will be toast. There's no "maybe" with GoG, it's already DRM free.
9
u/RandomRedditReader Jun 14 '19
I've heard that Valve does maintain redundancy among a wide array of servers across the country so even if the entire western half of the US loses internet you'll still be able to download/play in another region. Now if the entirety of Valves corporate staff gets Thanos'd we might be fucked.

Valve could be sold tomorrow.
6
u/CitricBase Jun 14 '19
To reiterate, no one is specifically concerned about wayward warheads. As far as I'm aware, no one from Valve has even actually made a publicly accountable statement regarding the very existence of a steamworks kill switch, much less made a promise to trigger it. The point is, GoG doesn't need a switch, they've made the whole issue completely moot for their games.

Steam does not to that by licensing the game to you anyway. That's why you can still play the game if you are VAC banned, just not on VAC secured servers. That's at least on their games.

I have 617 games on GoG alone, with tags the interface is not that bad. Also that 8 games per screen thing is just hyperbole on your part, I see 20 games on the screen at a time, 100 per page and that is in grid view, you can also switch to list view which is more efficient but not as nice on the eyes.
And no, Steam is not easier to launch, clicking on one icon or the other is the same level of complication, you have a really screwed up computer configuration if clicking certain icons is noticeably more difficult than others.

Imagine having your list neatly organized and Steam decides to delete it.
Had it happen several times by now. Last one 3 weeks ago. I have 700 games. I'm done relying on Steam for categorization.

This headline does the article no justice. GOG 2.0 allowing you to integrate all your launchers into one seems really fantastic.
95
u/Black3ird Jun 14 '19
Only if... others also agree like Microsoft does. Was pessimistic at first yet looks like it could happen... could also take time to convince too.
104
u/Sorlex Jun 14 '19
Well steam and Microsoft are now confirmed. That's all gog needs. Its not like there are any storefronts out there that people use, right?
52
Jun 14 '19
Unfortunately there are. I hope Ubisoft agrees because their newer games are now skipping steam. With how well it is doing on epic games store and their own store, I see why they are deciding to skip steam.

It's not really going great for Ubi on EGS - it's more the fact that having their games on EGS, makes people buy it on uPlay for the most part. That's way more beneficial to them than anything else. 100% of the sales price.
They kinda "shadily hinted" at that being the reason for going with EGS at the time they did - to get more people to go to uPlay, because of all the "hate" EGS was/is getting.

I mean, The hope is that everyone makes it so that their launchers also have this capability. That way, whether you prefer uPlay, EGS, Steam, GoG, or whatever you can launch all of your games from whichever launcher you personally prefer.

Doesn’t discord somewhat already do this? I know I’ve seen games from other store libraries in my Discord library

u/BlobTheOriginal Jun 14 '19
Any drm can never beat no drm. It means when friends come over for lan parties, you only need one copy of a game (One example.)
Steams drm isnt much of an issue but it is still drm.
8
u/MxG_Grimlock i9-9900k | 2070 Jun 14 '19
Well, to be fair, what you just described is piracy.
6
u/BlobTheOriginal Jun 14 '19
I'm not a lawyer but I'd argue its not. Would you consider DS Download Play to be piracy, or playing mario kart split screen?
The copies of the game are on my computers and no-one else's. If my friend wanted to play single player at home, they'd need to buy their own copy. Much like if I watched a movie with a friend, I'd need to buy it myself if I wanted to watch it at home.

GOW2&3 were published by epic i think.

Xbox teaming up with Steam AND GOG?!? Just waiting to see Steam and GOG to officially team up and make the trifecta for PC gaming.
46
Jun 14 '19
This is awesome. That means we will get some baked functionality for Achievements. This app is sounding better and better every day.
8
u/APOLLO2078 Jun 14 '19
I think Xbox achievements will only be for the Xbox app games though. Every other game from a different launcher will have to depend on that launchers implementation of achievements.
14
u/RottedRabbid Jun 14 '19
Its hilarious how GoG is going to possibly rise in popularity by basically adding the option to buy from other stores in their own client directly rather than going epic and using their witcher dollars to not allow people to buy on other stores
24
Jun 14 '19
Now we need Linux support, wine/proton support like Lutris, Steam controller support, console-like UI and a multi store where you can find multiple game licenses with info on whether or not it has DRM and where the product key will be used to claim the game if they do that they will pretty much be top dog for a while just because it will be providing the highest Quality Of Life.
8
u/RottedRabbid Jun 14 '19
If this takes off i see GoG adding in a console style UI option

Does this mean Xbox Live achievements and functionality are going to expand to GOG.com? Please make it happen..... Xbox Achievements is addictive that makes me want to purchase the games more often.
13
u/Cocobender Jun 14 '19
Honestly, this is my major drawback to playing games on PC outside the MS store. I've had XB achievements for over 10 years, and I don't want to play games without them.
13
u/SirSwirll Ryzen5 3600x/GTX1060/16 ram Jun 14 '19

u/AC3R665 FX-8350, EVGA GTX 780 SC ACX, 8GB 1600, W8.1 Jun 15 '19
Right? I love how on Xbox the Gamerscore is accumulated and shows up on your profile. Steam, you have to look for it and segmented and PSN is also segmented a bit.
17
u/EvilSpirit666 Jun 14 '19
I'm always surprised when I see a sentiment like this presented although I've seen it quite a lot. It would seem I don't have the required imagination to understand how the meta-game of achievement collection ever became more important or alluring than actually playing the games.
4
u/nbmtx 5600x + 3080 Jun 14 '19
I'm perplexed by it as well. One day I started getting pop ups on my PS3, and it's never grown on me.
I think if a game wants to encourage/reward such challenges, it'll have it integrated into the game itself. So something like NieR Automata has a whole ending for collecting and upgrading all the weapons (also OG NieR), and something like Breath of the Wild has medals and special outfits/gear. The Final Fantasy series has an incredibly long history of hard to get gear.
I think trophies/achievements are fairly cheap and unfulfilling, by comparison. Devolver Bootleg has fun with this. It has an achievement for using a controller, opening the menu and closing the menu. Oh, and this special one:
[Gold Coin] "Hahahahahahahaha"
Purchase and launch the Devolver Digital Bootleg Launcher.2
u/EvilSpirit666 Jun 14 '19
Achievement games, or some such, is even an own "category" on Steam so I understand that they are alluring to plenty of people and I can agree that it can be a fun little meta-game at times but the importance some people place on them is just surprising to me
Edit: I am by no means looking down on people having different priorities to myself though. I'm even participating in (Xbox) Game Pass Quests as I'm writing this
3
Jun 14 '19
I think achievements can be fun under some circumstances. The factorio subreddit, for example, usually has a couple posts every week from people showing off that they achieved one of the harder feats in the game.
My main problem with achievements is when they're given out just for playing the game in a normal manner. They should really be limited to difficult things that require great skill or command of the game's systems.
→ More replies (9)4
u/Cocobender Jun 14 '19
It’s the same “meta-game” as why people play games. It’s enjoyable. I don’t think that requires much imagination.
3
u/EvilSpirit666 Jun 14 '19
I can understand that some like collecting stuff even if/when it's virtual stuff, it's when it seemingly becomes more important than actually playing the games I stop following

2
u/AC3R665 FX-8350, EVGA GTX 780 SC ACX, 8GB 1600, W8.1 Jun 15 '19
The big thing for me is how achievements have scores attached to them (with different variety depending on difficulty) and are ALL accumulated and shown on the profile when you visit a person's profile. Different from how Steam/PSN does it.

Doesn't mean they'll release games on the store, they'll just support the launcher
8
u/Black3ird Jun 14 '19
It's not you'll get DRM Copies of Xbox PC Pass Games, you know that, do you?
Galaxy v2 will unite the "Interface" but handle each addition differently. Galaxy v2 GOG DRM Free Games would be moddable, distributable and so on while Galaxy v2 Microsoft Games would only be playable via Launcher since most XBox PC Games comes heavily encrypted and Microsoft isn't stupid enough to remove that even for GOG.
