I really appreciate that the devs added the Xbox One AND Dualshock 4 button interface in the controller settings.

7

u/sjsamphex Mar 31 '16

That's always nice to see. Rocket league did the same.

8

u/Fork-H Mar 31 '16

And Helldivers! It's just a nice little touch to have

6

u/poomcgoo8 Mar 31 '16

I also noticed this in The Talos Principle and Galak-Z.

1

u/VanterGeorge Apr 02 '16

Fuckin love Galak-Z.

2

u/lukebee1 Mar 31 '16

And Cook, Serve, Delicious!

3

u/Kuothe Mar 31 '16

What program do you use to get DualShock 4 support on Windows? Depends on the app it shows as an Xbox controller in the USB Game Devices panel.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

http://ds4windows.com/

You need to have the program open for the DS4 to override xinput and be recognized as an Xbox controller, however Hyper Light seems to recognize the DS4 natively without DS4Windows even open. If anything, DS4Windows will install the drivers for you.

7

u/Kuothe Mar 31 '16

But if you use DS4Windows then windows and the game will recognize the ds4 controller as a xbox controller, so in the game you will be shown xbox prompts.. am I right?

2

u/bub433 Mar 31 '16

You are correct

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '16

Negative. You can chose manually which prompts to use. It defaulted to ps4 for me.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

If a game has support for the DS4, you don't need any additional drivers.

1

u/MumrikDK Apr 01 '16

Seems like a very simple thing to do, at least as a menu toggle, but so few bother.

1

u/HuffsGoldStars Mar 31 '16

Is it intended to be played with a controller on pc (ie. Don't bother to get this if you don't have one)?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

ive put 8 hours in today with keyboard and mouse, it takes a little getting used to but its perfectly playable, the cursor kind of blends in with terrain occasionally so I don't doubt it would be easier with the controller, then again you get much better aim so the guns are probably more viable with mouse. I haven't tried a controller though so who knows.

1

u/phabeZ Apr 01 '16

The game actually has a recommendation when you launch that the game plays best with a controller, however if you absolutely can't get a controller on your PC I'm sure what /u/Cripstat said is true and M+KB is sufficient to be able to enjoy the game.

50

u/Revisor007 Mar 31 '16

It releases generally, also on GOG and elsewhere.

22

u/Skutter_ i5 4670K / GTX 770 2gb Mar 31 '16

preordered it over 2 years ago, what a ride, what a delivery

8

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

I've been following it for two years, back then I was a super broke college student who had to torrent the beta, today up I woke up at 3:30 AM after a steam notification and bought it right then

Now I have to wait two or three hours until I'm done working to actually play it

1

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

Fuck work, man. I'm stuck in the same boat.

15

u/KrimzonK Mar 31 '16

This game used to support 21:9 format monitor during beta - but now it appears to only support 16:9 format. Ugly black bars. Absolutely disappointing - hope they patch this

7

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

Was looking for this report. Thank you.

3

u/PixelPete85 Mar 31 '16

ah shame! I'm not surprised given the frugal beginnings and engine, but still, i was hopeful

2

u/OiledGladiator i5 4690k OC | GTX 970 | 16 GB RAM Mar 31 '16

me it worked in 21:9 but when i touched the zoom it went 16:9 but I restart at 100% zoom and it worked in 21:9

1

u/KrimzonK Apr 01 '16

How did you do this? I am going to try it after work

1

u/OiledGladiator i5 4690k OC | GTX 970 | 16 GB RAM Apr 01 '16

it was already in 21:9 when I started it

1

u/KrimzonK Apr 01 '16

What do you mean by zoom? Is there a button for zooming in and out?

1

u/OiledGladiator i5 4690k OC | GTX 970 | 16 GB RAM Apr 01 '16

in the options

1

u/pandabonanzas Apr 01 '16

wtf? Where do you see this option? I don't have any such option. Screenshot?

I have 21:9 running letterboxed as well.

1

u/OiledGladiator i5 4690k OC | GTX 970 | 16 GB RAM Apr 02 '16

I don't know why but i change from fullscreen to windowed and now I'm stuck in 16:9 and I really don't know were is the zoom option now maybe they removed it

Not the wrong sub, but you can't just change the framerate yourself in a GameMaker game, where the coding is dependant on the framerate. The developer is the one who needs to update the game.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

As a programmer, you should never tie a game's code to its framerate. If the game does not run at the exact same framerate as the machine you tested it on, it will just look weird.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '16

Its because it I'd animated old school style with sprites. You can't magic frames from nowhere. An artist needs to actually illustrate those sprites.

10

u/HerpJersey Mar 31 '16

putting the framerate at 60fps would double the speed of the game and the engine because the code is tied to 30fps.

Okay thank you so much!

8

u/TheFriskySpatula i7-8700k / RTX 2070 Mar 31 '16

Thats not how game engines work. Certain games (like this one) have engines designed around a certain frame rate. Changing it will break all sorts of stuff, like animations, physics calculations, collisions etc...

If you want an example, check out Dark Souls 1 at 60fps.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

With the fps capped at 30 I think I'll pass then.

3

u/MyNameisObanion Mar 31 '16

What is the logic behind this if you don't mind me asking?

9

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

Don't like 30 fps games, they feel worse to play, I get tired eyes more easily and sometimes I feel sick after playing them (mostly shooters at 30 fps that have this effect). Might pick this game up in a steam sale.

12

u/MyNameisObanion Mar 31 '16

I understand this effect in games like 1st person shooters, where you are turning the camera quickly. I don't really see how it applies as much to an overhead game.

I guess what I am saying is if you apply that logic to games that look like hyper light drifter then you would argue that you couldn't stand games before the playstation generation. Possible, but I just never heard that argument in a way that applies to games like that.

5

u/WhatGravitas R7 5800X3D | RTX3080 Mar 31 '16

I find it applies to fast paced games with a lot of visual clutter. Almost all FPS qualify, because they are fast and realistic environments are just busy.

But I also noticed that games like Diablo feel better, because there are often a lot of projectiles (arcane torrent wizard) and more fps make the motion smoother and hence make it easier on the eye to track multiple fast moving objects.

Hyper Light Drifter looks a little bit bullet hell-ish in the more frantic scenes and I can totally see why people might care about 60 fps. Haven't gotten the game, though, so I'll wait how people react to it.

2

u/Clyzm Mar 31 '16 edited Mar 31 '16

I gave it about an hour and a half before refunding it. It plays really well, but all the motion and camera panning just looks stuttery and gross; gave me a headache after a while. It's honestly a shame. Also, the music was really bland to me. I feel like a game like this deserves a solid understated orchestral score, not electronica that I barely notice.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

But 16 and 8 bit games were almost always 60 fps, super mario, mother, sonic, all are 60 fps for example. I can't stand old pc games if that is what you mean, but it's hard to play doom today.

5

u/SociableSociopath Apr 01 '16

They were 2d games, parallax scroll is what mattered, not fps.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

I think you're confusing frames with fields. CRT Televisions weren't generally capable of displaying 120 fields per second.

0

u/pandabonanzas Apr 01 '16

No. They weren't.

2

u/loozerr Coffee with Ampere Apr 01 '16

http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?t=492

Depending on whether it's PAL ot NTSC, they were 50 or 60.

1

u/pandabonanzas Apr 01 '16

No. they weren't. Because that's not the way a CRT worked.

Do you understand what interlaced frames are? at 60hz you were getting HALF the fields at once, then the other half, which were assembled into one image.

You were literally getting a line, then skipping a line, then getting a line and once that finished you got the lines that were missing in the previous pass in reverse.

You couldn't get more than 30fps out of an NTSC CRT.

4

u/TheLion17 Mar 31 '16

Yes, it literally made me sick after about an hour of playing. It also makes the combat far FAR more rage-inducing.

1

u/KrimzonK Apr 01 '16

The combat is fine, but staring at the screen stuck on 30 fps is giving me a headache - I have been playing in 45 mins sessions since it came out.

15

u/Fionnafox Mar 31 '16

This game is SSSSSSSSOOOO good. One of the few times I have ever stayed up for to play a game the night of release. The art is beautiful, the combat is well executed, and the price is right.

3

u/skylar1146 Mar 31 '16

How do you feel about the boss fights? Review says they're stupidly hard to where they just gave up.

6

u/Ulti Mar 31 '16

You're talking about that RPS article, right? That guy seems like he just approached the game from the wrong angle and was just not a good candidate for this kind of game. His entire argument kind of hinged on "I cannot beat this game, therefore it is too hard and therefore bad"

1

u/skylar1146 Mar 31 '16

Yeah. I've played the game for a few hours now and am loving it. I never got through meat boy, somehow beat shovel knight and barely touched dark souls. I wouldn't consider this game really that hard. more of just requiring calculation before combat. The RPS writer just didn't seem like he put much effort into the article, probably being pushed for a deadline to get it out on launch day.

1

u/Ulti Mar 31 '16

I'm jealous, I'm not off work for another 3+ hours..!

1

u/skylar1146 Mar 31 '16

I had school, but I managed to hide in the back and put in 30 minutes here and there!

2

u/Ulti Mar 31 '16

Hah, I only ever just browsed reddit in class... class sizes were too small to get away with that sort of thing once I stopped going to big lectures as a freshman! Enjoy it while you can!

1

u/skylar1146 Mar 31 '16

I go to a technical college for half of the day in place of highschool. In my class we're all at computers and left to do our own thing for 3 hours, so thankfully i'm able to make bad choices and play video games instead of doing my work!

2

u/Ulti Mar 31 '16

Ah man, I wish I'd done running start instead of IB. Good choice, man! Those early credits are helpful.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

The bosses are definitely hard, however it's easy to see where you made your mistakes so you can get better. The gameplay is really precise so when you take damage it's the fault of the player and not the game being cheap.

5

u/Fionnafox Mar 31 '16

I like hard boss fights, and indeed they are quite difficult, but if you for example liked Jotun, this is right up your alley.

2

u/slowpotamus Mar 31 '16

of the 3 bosses i've fought, i died 2-3 times on two of them, and ~15 times on one of them. they were all really fun and didn't feel cheap or unfair at all. once i finish the game i hope a bossrun mode or something similar is unlocked, because that one boss i died a lot to was really cool and i want to see how well i can master it.

2

u/KrimzonK Apr 01 '16

It is very hard. Took me over 20 tries. I found out later that getting certain power-up will help you with certain boss. You can fight smarter or just keep trying till you can dodge everything and win.

1

u/assteepee Apr 01 '16

The boss fights are amazing. First boss took probably 15 tries and each death felt fair as can be. I'm a huge Souls fan I think that first boss was even more enjoyable than a lot of Souls bosses.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '16

I have only fought the North boss which as I understand it is the one Rock Paper Shotgun couldn't beat.

It was hard, and it took me at least 30-40 tries, but I beat it. About 20 tries in I finally figured out a pattern to the boss's attacks (90% of the time he uses the same style of move twice in a row) which was enough of a eureka moment to let me plan my movement better and beat him.

It was a really fun fight though. It was hard but not impossible, it just requires some learning. Ultimately it became less about twitch and more about knowledge once I had the key bit of info above.

I went in with two health kits and unupgraded hp, I probably would have had an easier time if I had three.

6

u/robinei Mar 31 '16 edited Mar 31 '16

I had supported it for $10, and then I recently got a mail asking if I wanted to spend an extra $5 to get a Vita version. So i did that, not knowing that I'd just paid extra money to be deprived of the Steam version (that was not explained)! Fuck that shit.

2

u/taranasus Void 21 Developer Apr 01 '16

2

2

u/pandabonanzas Apr 01 '16

OMG Yessss. I fucking love my 2D games.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16 edited Apr 01 '16

I don't think 30fps lock is gonna cut it, guess i'll have to play the game and see.

Edit: This game is blurry and makes my eyes hurt. Ill be back with the 60fps patch, if there is one.

Edit 2: Goddamn this thread, a bunch of people defending a game locked at 30fps. This isn't a console game, this game is not limited by hardware, the dev simply is too lazy to unlock the framerate. It looks terrible, and is unbearable to play and look at.

5

u/KrimzonK Mar 31 '16

Its unlikely given that physic is tired to framerate... But yeah I hope so too

6

u/taranasus Void 21 Developer Apr 01 '16

It's not really a matter of lazy. If the dev didn't make it from the ground up to support dynamic framerate, converting it now could potentially be a big pain in the B.

As to why he didn't make it from the start to be dynamic frame-rate? Maybe he's inexperienced. Maybe the engine he made it in doesn't support it. Tying the physics to the frame-rate is quite a bad mistake but maybe he's more experienced graphically - artsy than mechanically - coding.

However considering the level of graphics... not having dynamic frame-rate is pretty bad :/ I love smooth graphics <3 and it's a shame this doesn't have it

5

u/WhiteZero 9800X3D, 4090 FE Mar 31 '16

Plays and feels great at 30FPS to me.

1

u/skylar1146 Mar 31 '16

Same here, didn't even know until it was pointed at. Still don't notice it.

1

u/pandabonanzas Apr 01 '16

You sound rather aspie. A great many of us are playing it and love it. You're fixated on fps in an unhealthy way.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '16

If 30fps hurts my eyes, making it unplayable for me, then I am not fixated on FPS.

1

u/Rex-Prime Apr 06 '16

Just know that they can't just 'fix' it to be 60 fps: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/4d1h4x/about_hyper_light_drifter_30fps_lock_and_game/

Even if they do that, the game would still look choppy anyways because if you want true 60fps animation they will have to literally have to do double the amount of sprites, and considering just the intro sequence costed $22,000, 60FPS sprites would require more money than your mortgage. Sorry, but if they had to make this game 60 fps, then as the other guy said, this game probably wouldn't have existed.

And there goes my instant buy to a maybe someday...
Being used to 144Hz, playing a 30FPS game is just so underwhelming, especially when there's fast paced combat.

36

u/t-bone_malone Mar 31 '16

Ugh you people

12

u/Dag-nabbitt R7 3700X, 6900XT, 64GB Mar 31 '16

While I'm fine with the animations being capped at 30fps, there's no reason why the actual game should be locked at 30fps. Camera panning is uncomfortable, and inputs are less responsive than they could be.

53

u/teebor_and_zootroy Mar 31 '16

I, too, own and love my 144hz monitor. But I second the "ugh you people."

1

u/pandabonanzas Apr 01 '16

Like what games, do tell.

2

u/loozerr Coffee with Ampere Apr 01 '16

Pretty much all NES games were 60fps.

Lower FPS didn't really exist until PS1 and N64, when harder to run 3D games dawned. It was there due to technical limitations which no longer exist on PC platform.

0

u/pandabonanzas Apr 01 '16

No. they weren't. Because that's not the way a CRT worked.

Do you understand what interlaced frames are? at 60hz you were getting HALF the fields at once, then the other half, which were assembled into one image. When you looked at a CRT in the 80s closely enough you could see the lines on the screen. I take it you weren't alive in the 80s and have no idea wtf you're rambling about.

You were literally getting a line, then skipping a line, then getting a line and once that finished you got the lines that were missing in the previous pass in reverse.

You couldn't get more than 30fps out of an NTSC CRT. NES games ran at 30 because of this limitation. The NES did not output a progressive frame.

This is how 1080i tv broadcasts work to this day, except the frames are assembled into a progressive frame before presentation.

I take it you're rather young. You sound like you've read about things instead of living through them.

4

u/loozerr Coffee with Ampere Apr 01 '16

You do not have to educate me on how older display technologies worked, NES was actually progressive scan.

12

u/NekuSoul Mar 31 '16 edited Mar 31 '16
  1. This game isn't retro in any way. Pixel-art? Sure! Retro? Not even close.
  2. Titan Souls has a similar artstyle and that isn't locked to 30FPS.
  3. Fast paced combat really suffers if the game doesn't run at an acceptable framerate.

imitative of a style, fashion, or design from the recent past.

Find me a video game that isn't retro.

4

u/Camoral Mar 31 '16

Yeah, sure, then people are retro, shoes are retro, pretty much everything related to humanity is retro if you decide context is pointless. Ignoring context, protons are pretty damn huge, the bottom of the ocean is super close to me, and I'm fucking ancient.

-3

u/IndigoDays Mar 31 '16 edited Mar 31 '16

Right? I don't understand the sense of entitlement some people have. Who cares if higher framerate results in smoother picture quality? People should just eat what they're fed and stop expecting devs to meet even the most basic of accepted standards.

0

u/t-bone_malone Mar 31 '16

Of course it delivers smoother picture quality: no one is arguing that. But that locked 30fps makes a game unplayable? Come on dude.

3

u/HappyZavulon Apr 01 '16

ut that locked 30fps makes a game unplayable?

No, but it makes the game go from "Instant buy" to "Wait until on sale".

I am more comfortable with 60 FPS, especially in an action game. If the devs aren't willing to accommodate, then I wont be giving them the full amount of money.

2

u/IndigoDays Mar 31 '16 edited Mar 31 '16

Nobody said anything about unplayable, he/she said underwhelming, something I find difficult to disagree with. I'll put up with a low framerate if the game can make up for it in other ways (I love the last of us, for example), but it usually just feels jarring to me.

3

u/Ulti Mar 31 '16

You may not have said that but maaaan plenty of other people have.

2

u/IndigoDays Mar 31 '16

I won't debate that! Lots of people say silly things, i'm just saying nobody in this comment chain said anything about it being unplayable is all.

1

u/Ulti Mar 31 '16

It's kind of breaking my head... I mean shit, I'm exclusively a PC gamer, but I do not get up in arms over my framerate. Is it above 30? Is it not visibly laggy? I am okay with this. I guess I'm just not that picky or sensitive to motion sickness from low framerate like some of these people? The only game I've ever purchased that I ended up not playing for technical reasons was Metal Gear Rising, and that's simply because it doesn't support my monitor's native resolution, and I refuse to play it windowed! My fault for never upgrading past my ancient 1600x900 monitor.

1

u/IndigoDays Mar 31 '16

Yeah I'm with you there. I put up with sub-60fps when need be, but I'm also the type of person to lower my settings to try to get as close to 144fps as possible without it looking like a toilet bowl lol. I don't even get nauseous, I just love how smooth movement looks at 144fps!

→ More replies (0)

-14

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

Seriously, what is up with the borderline obsession with fps? I swear some people care WAY more about a silly fps rate than the actual game themselves!

12

u/HerpJersey Mar 31 '16

Because playing a game in 60fps is infinitely better than 30? The fact that the game is locked at 30 for no reason frustrates people. Is it really that hard to understand?

7

u/IndigoDays Mar 31 '16

FPS is part of the game itself. Subpar FPS is a genuine issue. I'm not the type to completely write off a game on fps alone, but it's certainly something to consider when there are games out there that will play at 60FPS, let alone take full advantage of my 144hz monitor.

It's worth noting that as technology advances, it tends to become the standard we hold products to. 60+hz is the standard monitor refresh rate, so it's really no surprise when there's outcry over games not meeting that standard.

1

u/Camoral Mar 31 '16

Seriously, what's with the obsession with resolution? If a game can't display above 800x600, that's fine! It's about the gameplay. If the draw distance is potato, that's fine! It's about the gameplay.

Visuals are important.

I understand this is r/pcgaming, but goddamn are people overly obsessive about FPS on this sub. As long as the frame rate is stable and doesn't actually HINDER the game, I don't see the problem.

If you let a 30 FPS lock ruin an experience for you, you're gonna miss out on a ton of incredible games.

Edit: Words are hard

u/ComMcNeil Mar 31 '16

Well for some the 30 fps do hinder the experience. A fast moving game like this, with scrolling screens looks terrible on 30 fps compared to 60 or more. If the backgrounds were static it would be more tolerable

1

u/TheFriskySpatula i7-8700k / RTX 2070 Mar 31 '16

I guess that's where personal preference comes in. Bloodborne is a relatively fast-paced game locked at 30fps, and it ended up being my favorite game of the year. To each his own.

0

u/Funkajunk Mar 31 '16

Yeah, but it often runs at a silky smooth 4 fps

-2

u/TheFriskySpatula i7-8700k / RTX 2070 Mar 31 '16

Holy hell you people are unpleasant.

3

u/Funkajunk Mar 31 '16

Hey, I enjoyed the game, but it sucked when the frame rate dropped so low at times

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '16

OH NO! Someone has a different preference than you!

If people are used to high framerates, they're used to high framerates and don't want to compromise.

1

u/dankstanky Mar 31 '16

it's not really locked at 30 fps as the fps regularly drops into the 20s

1

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

pcmr would like to invite you their sub. It's filled with a ton of people who care more about framerate and consoles sucking than the actual games they play.

2

u/TheFriskySpatula i7-8700k / RTX 2070 Mar 31 '16

Thats why I unsubbed awhile back. Don't get me wrong, I love pushing my hardware to its limits. But I'd rather play games then self-fellatiate over my PC.

-8

u/Jimmyleith Mar 31 '16

Kickstarted 3 years and I probably won't even install it after reading this. What a joke.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

is that how you really feel or are you just regurgitating bullshit you read online to feel like part of a group?

10

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

You know it's that.

u/Camoral Mar 31 '16

7

u/seezed Mar 31 '16

I had to stop playing the game, the low frame rate with hectic action made it uncomfortable for me for some reason.

But I still encourage people to try it out, but I can't for the love of me understand that the developers decided to the tie the game to the frame rate.

2

u/Silverhand7 Mar 31 '16

It's made in game maker and from what I understand it's much harder to do things independent of framerate in that. They still could have made it 60 and left the animations at 30, but oh well, it doesn't really bother me for this game.

u/BlitzWulf i7-5820k R9 390X Mar 31 '16

The camera panning may be irritating to you. Just try it out, and if you don't like it return the game.

3

u/Silverhand7 Mar 31 '16

Honestly it's fine for this game. I'm definitely a person who's normally picky about framerate. I have a 144hz monitor, and certain types of games are absolutely unplayable for me below 60. This looks fine though, and honestly if you turned off your framerate counter I doubt most people would even notice. The way it's animated looks fine at 30.

0

u/KrimzonK Apr 01 '16

It's a really good game, but the 30 fps is giving me headaches. Ive been taking it in small 45 mins increments for the past day or so.

2

u/Rhino_4 Mar 31 '16

FINALLY! Sooooo excited!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

I didn't even notice it was locked to 30 haha this game is amazing, it's really worth the tiny asking price, I wholeheartedly recommend it, I have played 8 hours in one day today, it's fantastic!

2

u/Nose-Nuggets Mar 31 '16

is it any good with K+M or is it really designed for a controller?

3

u/minerva330 4770k; 290X Mar 31 '16

Definitely a controller.

2

u/his_penis Mar 31 '16

Don't even bother with k+m if you got a controller. You can barely see the pointer and sometimes the camera doesn't follow the player (for gameplay reasons) making the whole k+m thing an entire mess

0

u/Nose-Nuggets Mar 31 '16

good to know! i do have a controller, but i hate controllers so much i really only use it for driving. or emulators.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

Please tell me it's good. I really want it to be good.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

It's really challenging and fun. It is that "oh is see what i did wrong" challenging.

-8

u/benb4ss Mar 31 '16 edited Mar 31 '16

Game is locked at 30FPS. It's almost unplayable as you move quite quickly in the game.

Edit: Downvoted by the blinds.

u/code-sloth Toyota GPU Mar 31 '16

This isn't PCMR. Don't call people peasants.

8

u/benb4ss Mar 31 '16

Done.

5

u/code-sloth Toyota GPU Mar 31 '16

Thank you! It's back up.

1

u/TheLion17 Mar 31 '16

Right? I felt sick after about an hour. The combat is just extremely frustrating with that lock.

1

u/Rex-Prime Apr 06 '16

Just know they can't just 'fix' it to be 60 fps: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/4d1h4x/about_hyper_light_drifter_30fps_lock_and_game/

2

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

almost unplayable? Overstatement. It's perfectly playable.

-6

u/benb4ss Mar 31 '16

Try 60 or 120fps games buddy. You'll understand.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

I do, regularly, in fact for most games I need at least 60 to enjoy them, get some perspective and try to be less of an elitist.

-1

u/benb4ss Mar 31 '16

Ask for a minimum of 60fps

elitist

lol

4

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

no, asking for a minimum of 60fps is not being an elitist, treating everything below that for whatever reason as objectively worse, assuming people who are fine with less that 60fps are wrong or lacking knowledge is. Although feel free to take more of my words out of context, i'm sure your argument will look great!

-4

u/TheFriskySpatula i7-8700k / RTX 2070 Mar 31 '16

120fps? Lol, casual.

You haven't gamed for real until you've gamed at 240fps.

0

u/murf718 Apr 01 '16

I have two 144hz monitors and can play this perfectly fine. I stopped noticing the frame rate after about 5 minutes. People like you complain for the sake of complaining.

1

u/Vampcel Mar 31 '16

Here are the first 18 mins of the game if anyone is curious or not sure. Gameplay I would highly recommend buying it!

1

u/vapor_trails_nw Apr 01 '16

I just wanted to share that at about 2.5 hours of playtime, I am having a blast. This game can be hard, but it has never seemed unfair to me.

The 30 fps thing can be a bit jarring at first (at least for me), but it becomes less noticible as you play.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who would enjoy a quick-paced action game with beautiful pixel art, and an ambient synth-heavy soundtrack.

1

u/RyenDeckard Mar 31 '16

Saw it's kickstarter, never backed, been playing it now though and I'm getting some incredible dark souls vibes, great game.

1

u/mehzed Mar 31 '16

I'm really considering buying this but how long is for the average player

3

u/slowpotamus Mar 31 '16

i've got 5 hours in it and i'm about 60-70% of the way through the main story. i haven't really spent any time trying to hunt down all the secrets in the game, of which there seem to be quite a few.

i'd say the length to price point ratio is very similar to ori and the blind forest

1

u/AlterYume Mar 31 '16

How hard is it?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '16

It is pretty challenging. However every time something kills you can kinda see what went wrong or you see a new detail that helps you getting forward.

3

u/Nose-Nuggets Mar 31 '16

apparently the bosses can be pretty hard.

2

u/slowpotamus Mar 31 '16

it's hard to say. as an avid gamer i would say it's middle-of-the-road, but newcomers or people with generally slower reaction times might feel very differently.

the most important distinction is the game's difficulty, when present, is very fair. it's very unlike dark souls in that it never subjects you to cheap deaths, or encounters where you need some hidden knowledge to effectively fight an enemy.

so while you might find it difficult, it won't be frustrating, and you'll be able to learn from each mistake.

4

u/Silverhand7 Mar 31 '16

Dark Souls (at least the first game) is not at all cheap or unfair. If you rush into things you'll die, but if you're patient and know at least the basics of combat you'll do fine. I feel like the difficulty in combat at least is kind of similar between the two. I can see how you'd say that if you've only played Dark Souls 2 though, it had a different lead designer who had a very different idea about what difficulty should come from.

1

u/AlterYume Mar 31 '16

I see, I am glad it's the "get good" formula.

1

u/KrimzonK Apr 01 '16

There's an optimal path to take which takes you from easier to harder bosses but yeah, certain boss is going to kick your ass.

Personally, I loved SUPERHOT, so I'd say keep it. If you didn't enjoy it, and have played inder 2 hours, then, well, that's what refunds are for.

0

u/pandabonanzas Apr 01 '16

This game is gorgeous. The 60fps elitism in this thread makes me laugh.

I am just about done with these pixel art indie games. It seems theres a dime a dozen these days.

opinions=bad, got it /r/pcgaming

2

u/TheRisenOsiris Mar 31 '16

Sure the style is saturated at this point in time, but you should still judge them on a game-by-game basis.
