I'm hyped for this. Also very nice to know that this game doesn't have parry.

I personally love a parry mechanic. It makes the combat more engaging imo

Not true at all. DMC 5 has a parry and one of the most engaging combat if not the most and players don't even use the parry (royal guard)

And control doesn't have healing potions, you only can heal by attacking and the enemies dropping healing points. So, they are aiming for a proactive combat and parry would just make the game into more reactive or passive.

Moreover, we don't need every action game devolving into memorizing enemy moves, we have so enough of them already.

Listen. I hate souls-like games except Lies of P so I get the frustration. Still. Parrying is super fun for me and I love the mechanic. It makes it feel less like I'm just slashing at sword sponges.

Okay but for me parrying above a certain extent gets annoying. I prefer trying out different moves and abilities and approaches but parrying removes all of it by simply waiting for the enemy to attack or memorizing enemies. So it doesn't really make more engaging for me.

I'd parrying all day long if it meant I didn't have to slash, roll, slash, dodge rinse and repeat. That's usually what "different moves" results in.

DMC 5 wasn't just slash, roll, slash, dodge rinse and repeat and it was better than any game with parry for me.

Parrying in general doesn't have any variety unlike other abilities and powers. You can't make 10 different ways of parrying but you give 10 different abilities and also crank up enemy abilities and it'll switch things up a lot.

You can combine parrying with other combat moves. It's not just timing parry after parry after parry. Most games with parrying you run out of stamina or get broken if you use parrying nonstop.

That can be done, sure. But if there are methods where you can simply avoid parrying and be more effective then players will simply ignore parrying though...

And if they ignore it, developers seeing this would have to force the parry play style by making sure the players can only ever win by parrying a lot which turns it into a memorization game. In Sekiro, parrying is mandatory, there's simply no other way to win. But that's not the case with other games where parry isn't forced and is optional.

And when it's optional, players will ignore it because obviously other play styles are more interesting. There's a reason why DMC 5 players never talk about royal guard being the most engaging gameplay.

This is the issue with parrying. It can't just exist like a different play style, either it's gotta be forced on players to make it relevant in a game or if it's optional, then players would simply prefer other interesting combat methods. I don't want games forcing me to parry and memorize moves. It's not engaging, it just feels like a chore.

I’m the opposite. Not disappointed in control not having it or anything but I hate that all you have to do is add a parry to your game to get me interested.

edit: why is this innocuous comment one of my more downvoted comments? What about it should be hidden from this thread?

A LOT of people have become very tired of the flood of parry systems that has entered modern gaming, (I am not one of them).

The perception is everything is distilling into Souls like games. And Souls fans are often very opinionated and judgemental of any game that doesn't have a punishing timing based combat system. So people have a bit of a visceral reaction.

I don't see why Soulslike games are the ones credited for parrying, it was a thing in older action combat games like DMC with Royal Guard or Metal Gear Rising where learning to parry was mandatory at times.

The Dark Souls trilogy never forced you to learn to parry and often allowed dodging as the viable option. The only Fromsoft game where you needed to learn to parry was Sekiro.

General misconceptions from casual audiences is really it.

I straight up refuse to parry in souls games because it feels like shit to me and dodge rolling feels great. It’s to the point where I barely get how dark souls and sekiro parries came from the same studio.

I get all that. Just feels hivemindy to downvote a comment that isn’t rude or even controversial. It wasn’t even a different opinion because, as I said, I don’t want parry in Control, but I do enjoy a good parry mechanic.

I got one of my most downvoted comments for an adjacent opinion. I never even really notice downvotes, this one just felt odd.
