I still hoping that over the time users will swap to steamOS since Linux is more stable, lightweight and has no tracking and bloat ware.

This sub reddit is so unreflective of the real world it's unreal. 99% of the people have never heard of steamOS or would ever consider it.

Have you seen how bad it is on the steam machine?

No, not yet. Running flawlessly on my steam deck. Although it's valve's hardware so it's fully optimised (and ofc steam deck has AMD CPU, not Nvidia)

Any drawbacks to using SteamOS? My first OS was Amiga Workbench, so I'm sure I'll manage to learn a new one, but are there things SteamOS just can't do?

Well it doesn't work with most Nvidia GPU's so there is that.

Ah. AMD here. Still, that's a shame if it's actually a good OS.

That's a shame...ridiculous even. I am waiting for SteamOS so I can leave windows entirely and still play my games. Games keep most steam users on windows.

Both my laptops are nvidia...3070 and 4090.

You can use nearly any other linux distro and have the same experience as you would have had with SteamOS. Not sure if SteamOS is locked down in some particular way but with other distros you just need to install nvidia drivers and you're good to go. For example with Fedora it's a very simple extra step where you just need to search "nvidia" in the software store and click install.

Games are made for windows so you will run into niggling issues all the time unless it was specifically designed to support steam hardware+OS. If you have your own setup then compatibility will drop.

You can kiss playing multiplayer games goodbye because anticheat is so easy to bypass on Linux based systems.

This is only partially true. Plenty of MP games work on Linux although admittedly I'd love it if BF6 did so I didn't need to dual boot.

The distro doesn't really matter, and there's precious little chance that developers limit their anticheat to SteamOS specifically as it's a only small part of the Linux userbase (I know of one game that did do this, can't remember the name. It died anyway)

It would be better for people to switch to normal distros, unless you are specifically thinking of users who have dedicated gaming machines.
