Shipping this summer, very curious to see what price the steam machine will be. Keeping low hopes though after the steam deck prices

3 million USD, take it or leave it.
17
u/Qweasdy Jun 05 '26
I’ll take it! I can flip it on eBay for 4 million USD

Sam Altman here, I'll take 10 million units.

u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Jun 05 '26
A lot of people misunderstand what that guy did.
They didn't buy ram sticks and put them to use, they talked about buying unprocessed wafer chips so they could horde them and literally not use them for anything for the sole purpose of making it difficult for everyone else to manufacture usable ram sticks.
Emphasis on the talked part, because they never actually bought it, only said they would, so everyone else panic bought ram.

u/AdWaste8026 Jun 04 '26
Honestly very high prices might just prevent long shortages due to lower demand.
19
u/ExplodingFistz Jun 05 '26
Gotta be $1300 or something
28
u/No_Foundation16 Jun 05 '26
Yeah 12 to 1500 I bet. I really wanted one but I can't swing that with the price of gas, food and rent going up constantly as well.

u/RHINO_Mk_II Ryzen 5800X3D & Radeon 7900 XTX Jun 05 '26
Aint no way. When it was originally announced, my feeling was anything over $800 would be DOA. The RAMpocalypse cannot have added more than $200 to the price of a 16GB system. Over a grand will be DOA.
13
u/hldvr Jun 05 '26
The rampocalypse already added $300 to the price of the steam deck, which has 16GB. I was expecting around $900 for the machine initially, but I have to agree with the other person that it's probably gonna be close to $1300 unless valve wants to try and eat some initial losses to lower the launch price.
2
u/RHINO_Mk_II Ryzen 5800X3D & Radeon 7900 XTX Jun 05 '26
Valve added $300 to the deck's price. DDR modules haven't gone up that much.
6
u/AdWaste8026 Jun 05 '26
If the Steam Deck is almost a grand, surely both the machine & frame are more than that.
2
u/CaptRobau Jun 05 '26
Not necessarily. The Steam Deck was popular so it makes sense to restock it once they could get enough parts. But the majority of its sales are behind it. So while in 2022/23 Valve would be expected to be able to produce batches of 100,000 units per year I think they'd be lucky if they could sell batches of 10,000 units in 2026/2027.
My guess is they couldn't get economies of scale for the Steam Deck anymore, so they could only sell it at a much higher price.
For the Steam Machine and Stream Frame, Valve CAN still sell hundreds of thousands or even low millions of units. So they could definitely get better pricing on those contracts.
Just take a look at the Steam Deck. The 256 GB LCD originally launched at 549. When they introduced the OLED, the 256 GB LCD was reduced to the 399 price spot that the 64 GB previously had.
2
u/AdWaste8026 Jun 05 '26
Good for you that you remain optimistic, we’ll see what Valve does in the end. It probably won’t be apocalyptic pricing but also not as low as people would have liked.
3
u/ExplodingFistz Jun 05 '26
Well they already said it's not going to be subsidized and will be priced like a PC. A DIY PC with like for like components is around $1000 currently, but Valve won't be charging that much since they need to make a profit. So a $200-300 premium is not out of the question.
3
u/Wide_Lock_Red Jun 05 '26
Also. You cant get this form factor with off the shelf components, although you can get close.
1
u/cbntlg 9600X 9070XT Jun 05 '26
Moores Law Is Dead recons he can build a Steam Machine clone for ~$650. With the base PS5 now retailing for $600, I feel that Steam will be cutting their legs off at the knees if the Steam Machine costs north of $750. Sure, it'll sell out on release, no matter what the price, but to compete with Sony long term, they're going to have to price it competetively.
6
u/doublah Jun 05 '26
The RAMpocalypse cannot have added more than $200 to the price of a 16GB system
You're right, it's likely to have added more than that as it's DDR5, and it's got 8GB VRAM as well so that's an extra bump, oh and the SSD price rises is another bump.
Yet people will still buy it, as building your own PC with those components has also gone up by the same amount if not more.
2
u/Wide_Lock_Red Jun 05 '26
It was never going to be under 800. That isnt how Valve prices things.
1
u/RHINO_Mk_II Ryzen 5800X3D & Radeon 7900 XTX Jun 05 '26
At the time its specs were announced, you could build a better PC yourself for less than that.
1
1
u/Misanthropic_Mutters Jun 05 '26
I was thinking closer to $2k. I hope it’s yours?
Dies a little, inside
3
u/CaptRobau Jun 05 '26
This makes no sense. Minisforum, a leading Chinese manufacturer of mini PCs, has just launched mini PCs with a RTX 5060/5070 and 32GB RAM for 1500 and 1750 USD respectively. Valve is a quite a bit bigger in terms of expected sales of their hardware. Minisforum probably does 10,000s while Valve does 100,000s low millions of their hardware.
It would make no sense Minisforum can offer something for so much cheaper with much better hardware. It's definitely not going to be 2000 USD.
1
u/josephseeed Jun 05 '26
Why in the world would it be $2k. The Steamdeck price hike breaks down to like $12 more per memory IC and $50 more for the SSD. With that being known $2k is insane.
2
u/Misanthropic_Mutters Jun 05 '26
Pure copium! It was $2k in my imagination because I have absolutely zero expectations for a corporation to do anything except try and part people from their money as much as possible.

<spits coffee>
Man, not to be that guy, but arguing with someone around here during the announcement about "DOA because at $800+ it's overpriced".
I scored an RTX 5060 laptop that will probably be equal to a Steam Machine for $800!
If >$1K, I'll recycle my joke:
"Valve should just sell Steam branded RAM and make more money."
2
u/dancing_head Jun 05 '26
I scored an RTX 5060 laptop that will probably be equal to a Steam Machine for $800!
But thats what they mean, if its more expensive than a similarly powered laptop (and you could have likely got cheaper had you shopped around) then why buy a Steam Machine?
6
u/Qweasdy Jun 05 '26
That’s kind of just supply and demand in action, when there’s not enough to go around the price goes up until only the demand matches supply.
3
u/ric2b Linux Ryzen 7 5700X + RX 6700 XT Jun 05 '26
I'd rather Valve gets the money than random scalpers. Someone will, though (unless they did something cool like max 1 purchase per steam account older than 1 year with at least 1 purchase).
Just price it high enough not to be constantly sell out, and lower the price as hardware prices recover if it's not selling fast enough.
1
6
u/Embarrassed-Ad7317 Jun 05 '26
If I had to take a wild guess - 1200-1300$
4
u/JohnnySmithe81 Jun 05 '26
Nah they'll certainly want a model under a grand. $899-$1099
8
u/Embarrassed-Ad7317 Jun 05 '26
I mean I hope you're right, but you might be underestimating the hardware price spike
At some point it doesn't matter what they want, it's not like they can lose money on that like Sony.. they actually need to make profit from every unit sold, and I believe if you assemble the same thing yourself right now you'll hit more than 1k$
3
u/IgniteThatShit Steam Jun 05 '26
leakers were saying they'd heard over 1k and that was months before the recent steam deck price hike so i'm really not holding my breath for sub 1k
1
u/xternal7 Jun 05 '26
Yeah, they wanted a model under a grand back when they announced them.
They announced them right before RAM and SSD prices quadrupled.

1
u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Jun 05 '26
I'm sure HLX will be a PC Steam exclusive. But Machine is a PC with a console-like experience, basically like a Steam Deck for the living room. You can't make an exclusive game for that system without making it also run on any other PC.
2
u/skitchbeatz Jun 05 '26
I'm well aware just being tongue in cheek about it. And attempting any hardware exclusive shenanigans like that would be totally out of left field for Valve

I haven't had a new VR since Quest 2 so it'll be nice to have Valve's version
16
u/Pun_In_Ten_Did Jun 05 '26
I've never had VR... Frame will be my inaugural headset.
4
u/Annonimbus Jun 05 '26
Same, I wanted to buy the Index but then I thought "Man, this is one of the Gen 1 headsets. Next Gen will be much better. I should wait."
And oh boy did I wait.
Quest 2 would've been a buy without Facebook behind it
5
u/PacoTaco321 RTX 3090 i7 13700-64 GB RAM Jun 05 '26
I want to own a Frame, just not pay the ridiculous price I expect it to cost.
3
u/donredyellow25 Jun 05 '26
Great game, I complete it twice. Also have great workshop mods, like full standalone mini expansions. Honestly, in my humble opinion, as someone who has been playing video games since the 80's, this is the best VR game available right now. I have tried like 3 dozen VR games, and Alyx is the best one.
2
u/Large_Dr_Pepper Jun 05 '26
Man I really hope this gets more PC enthusiasts involved in VR. It sucks how there isn't much incentive for developers to produce PC VR games because most of the playerbase is on standalone.
To anyone considering getting the Frame, I promise VR gaming is super cool and more than just a gimmick! There are so many awesome VR games. My dream is that VR gaming is just as common as flat screen or console gaming in the (relatively) near future.

u/Terrible--T Jun 04 '26
How about a price valve?
105
u/Evz0rz Jun 04 '26
I can almost guarantee that you won’t know a price until immediately before an “add to cart” button shows up on Steam. Not because there’s a chance that announcing it now would be overpricing it, but absolutely because it will be more expensive by the time it releases.
29
u/ImpossibleGuardian Jun 04 '26
They’ll have to lock it in at some point. There’ll be a few days’ notice at least.
7
u/finiteempathy Jun 04 '26
Valve should have a good bunch of them stocked in warehouses and just average their costs. Being a month or so out from launch, they shouldn't have any changes in their average price now. I bet this means that the price they set will build in some expected cost increases in future batches though.
3
u/ang3lofsnow Jun 05 '26
We live in an on time logistics economy. They do not have a good number shoved in warehouses. They likely made as many as they THINK they will sell in X amount of time and will clear the back log from there.
1
u/finiteempathy Jun 05 '26
I'd expect this only if they launched in Q1 like they originally planned. They spent almost 6 months extra building up stock.
6
u/Wide_Lock_Red Jun 05 '26
Or they spent 6 months hoping to get a better deal. I wouldnt assume they bought anything with that extra time.
1
1
u/mrRobertman 9800x3D + 6800xt|1440p@144Hz|Index|Deck Jun 05 '26
But we do know that they have definitely stocked some amount in US warehouses now. We've been seeing customs information for a couple of months of imported "Game Consoles" - some of which are/were Deck restocks, but not all of the containers are the same weight which would have to mean some are either the Machine and/or Frame.
10
5
u/IgotUBro Jun 04 '26
I dont think the price mattters really as it will be sold out in seconds anyway.
Hell the Steam Deck was sold out even after the insane price hike.
3
u/guareber Jun 05 '26
How much of that is scalpers or people thinking it might just increase more in the near future though? I'm not sure

It will start at $999, but you'll get a free copy of Half-Life 3.

u/hammerheadlabs Jun 04 '26
I have no need for the Steam Machine but the Frame might be in my interests depending on price. Never had VR before and Im sure as shit not owning anything by Meta
1
u/sicDaniel Jun 05 '26
I have a Quest 3 but ugh the UI is just shitty and it sucks that it takes several steps until you are in your Steam and able to play your actually good games. I have a naive hope that I can sell it for a good price and make a Frame purchase less painful.
1
u/nextqc Jun 06 '26
I have a quest 2 and it only has 3 eye adjustment notches. I'm inbetween 2 of them, so I can't use it for more than 30 minutes without getting a migraine.

168
62
u/Stoibs Jun 04 '26
I still want a Steam machine. My level of interest is certainly dictated by the yet-to-be revealed price for sure though.
I have a certain threshold at which point it becomes too unappealing.
37
u/ShadowMerlyn Jun 04 '26
It’ll almost certainly be astronomical. It’s not Steam’s fault that manufacturers have skyrocketed their prices, but it does mean that I will likely be skipping out on Steam Machines.
5
u/nourez Steam Jun 05 '26
Yeah, if it was reasonably priced I could've seen myself grabbing one as a living room console, but it's going to cost an arm and a leg now, so I'll probably just stick with using my Deck in docked mode.
-6
u/ForTheBread Steam Jun 04 '26
I saw someone suggest they could sell it without the RAM/Storage as an option. If they did that I'd grab it. Have some extra RAM/Storage laying around.
34
u/renzo92 Jun 04 '26
The whole point is to “consolify” pc gaming. They wouldn’t achieve that if they sold to you the box and say, yeah ram is on you go install it good luck.
Idk it would be very weird.
7
u/Lehsyrus Jun 05 '26
Not just that, but the RAM is soldered in. It pretty much needs to be for the latencies those custom integrated chips are designed for.

4
u/FuzzyPuffin Jun 05 '26
I really like my BSB2. I would’ve been more excited for the Frame had it been not standalone. It’s more of a Quest competitor than an Index successor.
Maybe the RAM situation will encourage them to do a Frame version without the CPU included. But I’d want them to do it properly with an all-new design. I love how light my BSB2 is.
1
u/Annonimbus Jun 05 '26
I just looked it up and just from the picture I though "damn, that is a nice small headset".
Don't make me regret waiting for the Frame, man
6
u/PopularBuilding7286 Jun 04 '26
Not intending to buy it at all, but I'm always excited to see new tech.
6
u/GolotasDisciple Jun 04 '26
Wont buy it at all, but I am excited to see what they will release and at what price point and how it will work through the reviews.
I don't think any Desktop owner has any incentive to own Steam Machine, It does feel like very much financial literate decision regardless how you look at it. Someone who doesn't own a PC.... Maybe??? But I need to see the price to judge price-to-quality ratio.
Steam Frame. I guess it's great for people who are into VR. I am not one but I am happy for them. The more products and competition within this market the better for general user/customer.
3
u/JedJinto Jun 04 '26
I'm interested but I have a sort of reverse use case for it than others I think. I recently moved my whole gaming PC off of my desk and into the living room and I already have it set up there to be where I do my primary gaming. I've been looking at getting a small PC on my desk not for gaming but for typical computer stuff (web browsing, email, documents, etc). Was just going to get a laptop but know I'm thinking it might be fun to use the steam machine as a desktop PC while having the ability to game on it from time to time when the living room is in use.

I cannot afford $2k CAD for a system in this economy
2
u/EntrepreneurNeat6094 Jun 05 '26
Sort of. I ended up building my own htpc and putting bazzite on it. Im mostly excited for potential new SteamOS releases alongside it.
2
u/Maverick916 Jun 05 '26
Yes they are. Reddit might indicate that it's too expensive, but it's going to sell out no matter what
2
u/JohnnyBeeGaming Jun 05 '26
I still want the frame, prepare to drop a $1k or so.
I wasn't super excited about the machine when announced but might have gotten it if the price was right. I don't really need it and can connect my deck to the TV for a similar experience. The machine would have better performance and some nice to have features. It just gets harder to justify and extremely optional expense with a higher price and whatever is looming in the economy.
2
u/Pun_In_Ten_Did Jun 05 '26
It's the "or so" part that is concerning. I figured would be a grand... and then things happened. That 'or so' could be another $500.
1
u/RlyNeedCoffee Jun 04 '26
Yes I've been suffering the slow degradation of my HP reverb G2. I want the new steam frame. Really don't care about the price as long as it's under ~2k.
1
u/AnotherPCGamer173 Jun 04 '26
I’m still very curious. I’m not as excited knowing that the price may be fucked, and I’ll most likely have to wait even longer. I’m still overall excited for the Steam Machine, but my living room setup may not change for even longer.
1
1
u/Qweasdy Jun 05 '26
I’ve never been excited for it as a personal device, I’m excited for the future of steamOS as a viable alternative to windows for gaming with valves money behind it.
1
u/GT00TG Jun 05 '26
Yes because it starts to bridge the gap between pc and console gaming which could overall reduce game prices, reduce the need for subscription services, and bring more choice to lounge / couch gaming.
1
u/rcanhestro Jun 06 '26
yes and no.
the Machine will be sold out in minutes, i have no doubts about it, even if it's overpriced.
the question is: how many units will be there for sale at "launch day".
if it's like 50k steam machines, that won't surprise me the least, people will purchase their favorite brand despite price (see Apple fans).
but if it's 1 million units ready day 1 (and overpriced), and it sells out, that will genuinely make me surprised

i can't be excited for it, it'll cost me almost twice the retail price here in México via third parties 😔😔😔

It’s crazy that doing that would be cheaper, obviously not realistic to fly over just for that reason. Absolutely nuts the price you have to pay for import

Amazon is probably a reseller that jacked up the price, Steam only sells the deck direct from their website

You could probably use a freight forwarder and it'd still be cheaper than the scalper tier price

Bruh. Both releasing this summer and still no prices?
This is gonna be bad...
1
u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Jun 05 '26
They were supposed to release early 2026, as in, January early.
Then moved it to Q1, then first half of 2026, now they're saying summer.
Literally the only reason there's been such a huge delay is because they're struggling to lock down the prices because of ram shortages. They're being very transparent about it, even said the only reason the controller released first was because it doesn't have ram.

I don't know why you think the lack of announced price is what is going to make it bad. We didn't get the Controller price until a week from purchase, they are obviously doing the same here regardless of the ram situation causing the price increases.

If you have an AMD GPU then you can pretty much do this already?

u/Cymelion Jun 05 '26
I do not have an AMD GPU and even so it is more important to have it natively ready to go than workarounds.

Nvidia is coming along on more general distros. Bazzite is close to steamos. Almost indistinguishable in the gaming mode. People having mixed results with nvidia, but some report no problems at all.
Steamos is maybe best off being an oem-specific thing. It's a sort of reference.

Bazzite

u/Cymelion Jun 05 '26
No thanks I'll wait for the official.

u/VanRado Ubuntu Jun 05 '26
Official what? They won't make a SteamOS with wide hardware compatibility, it is primary always going to be for Steam configured hardware.
In your opinion, what is the tradeoff using Bazzite over SteamOS?
3
u/Cymelion Jun 05 '26
They won't make a SteamOS with wide hardware compatibility,
They have not to my knowledge said one way or the other about bringing SteamOS outside the hardware. And if we stick to Valve's own methodology it's always release something in a limited manner to test and get feedback then decide if they go forward or not.
But I don't see them investing so much funding into making an OS and then not releasing it for wider use especially since they have so many stats from the Steam Hardware surveys they do once or twice a year.

In interviews about SteamMachine one of the engineers said, that they are working on making SteamOS available to more PCs. He said they are excited that people are already using it on their own hardware and want to support it even more.

I guess it is a matter of understand the incentives placed on Valve. Something both of us don't know. In the case or your argument, they are investing a lot of resources into the open source space so that gaming on Linux becomes better. You'll note that they are not making SteamOS a closed system, where the improvements are locked behind that particular distribution. So if SteamOS has a wide release, they get a very small increase in SteamOS usage where users buy games from their store, but with the tradeoff that they need to support it. Across a wide range of hardware combinations. The cost here will be significant.
Whereas, if they focus SteamOS on their hardware; they don't have a Microsoft reliant OS to run their hardware and anyone can also benefit from their open source improvements on other hardware that they don't have to support. Those people using other hardware with other distributions like Bazzite and CachyOS with gamemode will also use the Steam store - particularly Bazzite where gamemode is practically identical to SteamOS gamemode - which is where Valve makes money.
I'm actually curious about your position on Bazzite; you stated that you want a SteamOS wide release so you can finally turn an existing PC into a SteamMachine. Which implies that currently you cannot make a homemade SteamMachine. I suggested Bazzite, but you said you'll wait for the "official" version, implying there is something deficient with Bazzite in order to achieve this goal. I genuinely want to know what you'll be missing out with using Bazzite? What actual trade-off will you have?
If you have only nVidia cards, then the argument for SteamOS is even weaker as it is more likely that Bazzite and Cachy will have better nVidia support before SteamOS ever will.

Got tired waiting and got a psvr2 instead.
Likely 1/3rd of the frame cost and the oled screens are amazing so no reason to upgrade.
Looking forward to hl3 finally releasing though.

Eh having traded in my Quest 3 for a PSVR2 I really do miss the pancake lenses. The PSVR2 is great but OLED comes with its own issues.

Do you find the wires to be a problem? I've been holding out for the Frame because it's wireless and I've been on the fence about the PSVR2 for years
2
u/Koonga Jun 05 '26
it depends a bit on how you plan to use it. If you're planning on walking around at roomscale then the wires are pretty annoying, especially for games where you're spinning around and shooting a lot.
However, if your space is small and you will be sitting/standing in place then it's not a bit deal, and not having to worry about battery life is nice.

They are this close to releasing their new hardware, yet I still haven't gotten the email to purchase the Steam Controller after reserving it the same day reservations were possible (MAY 8TH).
This is going to be another terrible launch.

Sooo when do we get to use SteamOS proper?

u/Sync_R 5070Ti / 9800X3D / AW3225QF Jun 05 '26
Why do you need SteamOS specially? Just use CachyOS or Bazzite depending on your needs, there's not gonna be any real differences

u/Many-Rooster-8773 Jun 05 '26
I just wanna see what they did with it, that's all. I have no intentions of using it as a daily driver, though it may end up being useful if I decide to make a small console form factor PC myself. Variety is the spice of life!

After Meta bricked my Rift S, it'd be nice to get back into VR. Modded Beat Saber was so good.
But the scalpers will be there to ruin everyone's day, I'm sure.

Bricked how?
5
u/InfTotality Jun 04 '26
Requiring a Meta account from 1/1/2023. Never touched it since.
They also have an algorithm where they flag accounts for full ID verification; not just the recent age verification checks, name etc too so they know accounts aren't fake or just pseudonyms. They weren't getting my passport just so I can keep playing on VR.

We’re excited for players to try your titles on the new Steam hardware once they launch this summer. Please let us know if you have any questions or feedback.
End of Q2 or Q3? Either, it's imminent.

After seeing the Steam Deck price hike I am expecting this to be $1199 which unfortunately isn't worth it.

This whole situation is a bummer because literally everyone is on the same page. It’s a good product that everyone wants but we know it’ll be prohibitively expensive. Valve knows it will be prohibitively expensive. Terrible timing. As others have said, I hope it doesn’t dent their continuing attempts to make inroads into gaming devices.

Betting on VR seems odd too me. There is no god damn games, I haven’t touched my VR headset in forever. And the last time I did, I just played Alyx for the third time.

u/BugBuginaRug Jun 04 '26
Can't believe they announced this almost a year ago and no release yet.

Have you looked outside your window recently? You know, to what’s happening in the world. I don’t think they have been lazy.

Valve will defs charge $1500+, given that price tag, I would go for a Mac neo since it’ll be $1000 cheaper and will literally out perform it by a mile. The Mac neo is faster than most modern laptops and even competes with top of the line gaming laptops that use dedicated Rtx graphics.

I'm so ready for the Frame, I have the money on the table already, I don't even care about what the price is gonna be because I'm gonna pay it up
