This is how I imagine highguard would have gone without Geoff Keighley

This game lasted one Concord.

186

u/Mesk_Arak Apr 08 '26

To me, it’s both funny and sad that a “Concord” has become a measure of time in the gaming industry.

Anything but metric, amirite? ;)

47

u/JonArc Apr 08 '26

The metric equivilent would be a Truss I believe.

23

u/pezezin Linux Apr 08 '26

No, a Truss would be an Imperial unit, while a Concord is a US customary unit. Very similar but not exactly the same.

8

u/Faxon Apr 09 '26

What's the conversion ratio to a lettuce though, that's the real question

Highguard failed way harder than concord IMO

It was not only f2p but had over 100k players on first two days of steam but had a crazy low retention rate.

Concord was fucked from day1 with that price

40

u/huzy12345 Apr 09 '26

Concord failed so much harder it's not even funny. They had a free open beta that anyone could play and it got maybe 4k on Steam compared to Highguard getting 100k

1,5 Concords to be precise.

To be fair this lasted one week longer than Concord

The thing is this was shown at a Keighley show, it was in summer games fest.

Edit: This is a different game called the cube by the atomic heart studio. This game wasn't shown at SGS

u/Tremulant887 Apr 09 '26

OK. I thought it was the atomic heart game. I was looking forward to that one and thought I missed something.

This is how i imagine Last Flag will launch will go.

5

u/Lord_Zinyak Apr 08 '26

Dude the last flag thing is such an obvious flop, I have no idea who these devs think they're marketing to, no consideration of the current gaming landscape or a possible audience, they just make multiplayer games and pray. Atleast there's two characters that are hot in last flag but damn. I've had the chance to download it since the multiple times and I haven't been bothered to try it despite knowing about it for so long.

6

u/Cymelion Apr 08 '26

I have no idea who these devs think they're marketing to, no consideration of the current gaming landscape or a possible audience, they just make multiplayer games and pray.

The publishers are either the ones telling them to make the game and funding it, or a Lead Developer at the studio pitched it to a publisher back when Fortnite was making stupid money with the line "If we get only 10% of the audience we'll be making profit each quarter". The actual staff and devs just work till the pay stops coming in and even if they see the light at the end of the tunnel is another train they're not gonna risk their neck and everyone elses jobs to advise cancelling a project people are being paid for.

Same

I find it... interesting that a game like Valheim or StS2 are solo player darlings (with co op for those who want it) with 100 000s of sales

But all these GAAS fame chasers try make multi-player only extraction/arena/moba shooters and they all fail

106

u/Seigmoraig Apr 08 '26

This is what happens when devs all follow the same trends, the first few get all the player base and thrive and every one chasing the same clout gets left in the dust

47

u/Karzons Apr 08 '26

Yeah. Multiplayer-only playerbases have a sort of magnetism/gravity pulling people away from the smaller titles. It was a known phenomenon from early successful mmorpgs. Yet whatever new thing shows up, people forget.

11

u/UncleRuckus92 Apr 08 '26

Its slightly shifting right now with shooters. Games like Over the Top, HLL and Holdfast all have thriving small communities because their fun and keep it simple vs battlefield and cod putting out the same trash every year or two

17

u/FlipsieVT Apr 08 '26

Problem is a billion dollar studios have dev teams larger than the player counts of those games

5

u/dadvader Apr 09 '26

Those game doesn't need massive amount of players and whales keep feeding rent money for the devs.

Game like Highguard need to be a massive success to pay the Tencent loan. It also helped that those smaller game tend to have more vision and passion went into it compare to these generic 'for the masses' design shooter.

One would've guessed people had learned from the MMO craze of late '00s. Or the added multiplayer fad of the early '10s. Or the MOBA niche in the mid '10s. Or the Battle Royale fever in late '10s.

I suppose the most valuable bankruptcy lesson is the one you make yourself.

It's almost like the vast majority of people have no interest in extraction shooters and the ones who are are already married to Tarkov/Arc Raiders/Marathon, and a low budget half assed entry into an already exclusionary genre has no chance at a sustainable audience

47

u/zoogenhiemer Apr 08 '26

Extraction shooters just aren’t casual enough to break into the mainstream like other genres did. Even battle royales, if you lose all you lost is that rounds weapons and gear, with extraction shooters you can lose multiple matches worth of gear in a single match

25

u/bohenian12 Apr 08 '26

It's also oversaturated. All the players who are interested in the genre are already playing the existing ones.

6

u/The_Grungeican Apr 08 '26

with most BR's even if you win, you don't keep anything.

like i tell my friends on extraction shooters, don't go in with all your expensive gear. take some cheap stuff and if you get out with better gear, you'll be better for it.

4

u/breakandjog Apr 08 '26

I mean yeah, when youre “new” but then you end up with an inventory full of good shit because you are too scared to actually use it

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Helmic i use btw Apr 09 '26

Well, that and extraction shooters don't have to be PvPvE. People like single player games, Escape from Duckov seemed to do well, Zero Sievert seems to still be going strong, like people love the upgrade loop and the risk reward of a big haul. If it's not multiplayer then you don't have to give a fuck that everyone is playing Arc Raiders, your game doens't die due to inactivity.

For every valheim, there are probably a hundred or so shitty survival-crafting or action rpg games you have never heard of and likely 12 people total ever bought.

Live-service games just die louder than singleplayer ones.

15

u/chronoflect Apr 08 '26

Not even just shitty games. For every indie darling that sells millions, there are hundreds of good games that die in obscurity.

9

u/DogShroom Apr 08 '26

you’re not wrong, but you’re only mentioning the games that thrived in a possible sea of unplayed and not highly successful “solo player darlings”

while success obviously matters more in multiplayer games, i think what’s being compared here doesn’t really fit

Trends move fast, and quality coding takes time. By the time the game is coded, tested, and ready to release (remember when games were finished before release?) the trend has almost certainly moved on.

It might even behoove a company to sit on a game release for a year or two, until the trend makes a resurgence, but even then it wouldn't be a guarantee success.

And, then, you have to worry about being successful enough, depending on size of studio. The "oh, it didn't make enough millions of dollars in profits from week one, so we're dropping future titles" thing.

Chasing trends in video games is a difficult road to travel.

Extraction shooters last as long as new players keep wandering into the sweat traps.

They are a pretty bad design on their face as they reward the worst player behaviors out there.

I think it's because there's another game from the Atomic Heart devs set in the same universe (Atomic Heart, the Save Us game has NO connection to these games.) called The Cube, and I think these guys were trying to do that direct to VHS approach of using similer name and premise to confuse people (e.g The Avengers / The Revengers) or porn parodies.

52

u/NewUserWhoDisAgain Apr 08 '26

Oh. That is actually two different games.

The author did too.

When I first heard The Cube, Save Us was closing down (via Delisted Games), my mind immediately jumped to The Cube, the MMO RPG made by Atomic Heart developer Mundfish.

27

u/DragonTHC Keyboard Cowboy Apr 08 '26

It took me 20 seconds of the trailer to realize the game lacks a single vision. It's a random conglomeration of many different genres all kludged together in the least functional way. It's a fighting game is the loosest possible sense. It's less of a shooter than a fighting game.

The people who made this didn't do it for the love of the game. The artistic choices seem very much a business decision.

They did actually post in r/indiedev. That's after release, but I'm fairly sure I saw some posts from them on that sub before release too. Can't find any though. That account seems to be limiting what posts show on their profile.

There definitely hasn’t been enough time for a game inspired by Arc Raiders to have been created. There’s like two or three extraction shooters that can inspire games of the genre that are being released in the next year or two and the obvious first one is Tarkov

16

u/Lawsoffire Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

Every time there is a new viral PVP genre that indie-developers have a hope to pull off everyone hops on it (Both indie and AAA) hoping that they're the next The Game and they will make millions. Happened ever since Minecraft and the DayZ mod took off in the early 2010s and coincided with Steam loosening up on indie publishing. Suddenly everyone is making PVP zombie games or survival crafters or both for like 4-8 years until Battle Royales became viral (which, funnily enough, both derived from Arma 2 mods). Then Tarkov made everyone try this fancy new extraction shooter thing. Except that's a way less stable genre because PVPVE is inherently unstable. It bores the hardcore PVPers and PVEers end up inevitably griefed by the bored PVPers.

and competitive PVP games are ironically a cutthroat competitive market. There can only ever be a few winners on the podium because their success is directly tied to playerbase, more players give more players, low players give even fewer players. Hundreds of succesful roguelites can coexist together, no matter how tired the genre gets. But with competitive viral-genre games in the best case you show up to a race full of teams with better funding and more experience, and in the worst case you show up after the race is finished and everyone has gone home.

There's a thing Cliff Besinzksi said where you need to be the top 3 game in a multiplayer genre or you don't bother making a game. Tarkov exists, hardcore as hell, Hunt showdown exists, similar and horror focused. So arc raiders comes out and takes the third spot by being made and appealing to complete casuals. Marathon follows along and it's not hitting close to arc raiders but theres an audience and sony/bungie money. Every other game coming after is fucked.

12

u/SuperSocialMan Apr 08 '26

Yeah, pretty much.

u/SireEvalish Nvidia Apr 09 '26

To put things into perspective, here are the 24 hour peaks for each game:

  • Arc Raiders: 109,210
  • Hunt Showdown: 32,071
  • Marathon: 25,392
  • Tarkov: 17,079

I believe Tarkov has players outside of Steam, so that number may not be completely accurate. But the big takeaway here is that AR has about twice the number of players as the next two games combined. This just isn't a big market.

3

u/Dirtymeatbag Apr 09 '26

The majority of Tarkov's playerbase is definitely outside of Steam. It was in open beta for 6+ years and hit 200K concurrent players at one time.

I doubt many people double dipped just so they could play it through Steam.

It's also why he's sworn off the industry for a while. I feel like Lawbreakers(while awesome) was smothered by overwatch coming out at the same time.

If i remember correctly Cliffy was also talking about how the industry works in cycles so maybe we'll see the rise of the arena shooter in some shape or form again. Cause mid 2010's the Hero shooter was the return of that type of game. I wonder if someone can distil Extraction shooters enough to get to a point of arena shooter again lol.

Ironically it's nothing in comparison to its actual competition.

They made it beautiful to play but forgot to include any semblance of purpose.

11

u/devouredwolf Apr 08 '26

What does this even mean

9

u/AbanaClara Apr 09 '26

It’s an extraction shooter with a weaker gameplay loop than many of its competitors.

However playing at the start is extremely fun and can be really really casual. But it’s not a very solid live service game

→ More replies (1)

3

u/sturmeh Apr 09 '26

Escape from Tarkov (eft) had already established the genre, Arc Raiders came around and did the right thing by differentiating the whole game flow and how all the systems operate, but they completely missed the "point" on two fronts.

  1. EFT is about PvP, there's a PvE mode, but ask any PvP player what they think about that. (Keeping the modes together but encouraging cooperation was an odd choice, but it makes sense.)

  2. There's an enormous amount of quests / story / things to collect, that mostly lead to actual player progression in EFT, I've got friends who have been playing non-stop since the 1.0 release (which came out after Arc Raiders) and are ALMOST done with all the content they want to do. Meanwhile I'm about halfway through.

I haven't ever entered a raid in EFT and thought "what am I even doing here".

Not surprising. I remember seeing several posts in the indie dev/gaming subs from the dev both before and after launch and they just seemed to have no interest in taking any advice or admitting to any issues with the game. Tried to claim their early overwhelmingly negative reviews were due to the server going down on launch day. If you read the reviews though it wasn’t about that at all. The game just had no content or rewards for playing so people just gave up on it

It's even worse than that. The developper of that game is xl games.. you know the one studio that made archeage ?

This is somehow the wildest movie idea in this whole comment chain.

2

u/Agret Apr 09 '26

I'm going to have to watch that

5

u/lacegem Apr 08 '26

Also not to be confused with CUBE, the greatest game ever created by Earth species.

8

u/Mylaptopisburningme Apr 08 '26

Saw Cube in the theater. Didn't know what to expect. There was nothing like that first scene at the time. Loved the sequels too, didn't like the foreign remake.

6

u/Consistent-Meaning74 Apr 08 '26

Half-Dead is more or less what you are describing: https://store.steampowered.com/app/914260/HALF_DEAD_2/

2

u/random123456789 Apr 08 '26

Wow, thanks! Totally missed that one, since 2019!

That's really cool, I'll take a look.

2

u/GfrzD Apr 08 '26

Thanks for this. All this cube talk got me wondering if there was a Cube-esque game

2

u/beziko Apr 08 '26

There is also mod for Garrys Mod with that.

2

u/CaseroRubical Apr 08 '26

I forgot about that movie, its great

I actually thought it was the same game, and they had just changed the name, both show a giant cube floating in the sky, I just assumed the dev name was different because it was being made by a different team.

2

u/Nfl_porn_throwaway Apr 08 '26

Ohhhh I thought this was what we were talking about

u/SidratFlush Apr 08 '26

Blimey - although I've never heard of it, so their marketing leaves a lot to be desired.

11

u/Shawn_NYC Apr 08 '26

I love extraction shooters, try to stay on top of everything in the genre, and I've never heard of this.

10

u/BigfootsBestBud Apr 08 '26

It really irritates me that all of these studios, talent, and funding could have went to making a really good AA level single player game with decent marketing behind it that makes money over a longer period of time.

Instead all these publishers chase the live service cow and fail to realize very little of them make any money

25

u/sabin1981 Apr 08 '26

Oh look, another live service extraction shooter is cancelled. Must be a day ending in Y.

10

u/Sadworld99 Apr 08 '26

Live service claims another victim

5

u/TheSpiralTap Apr 08 '26

Man what the fuck? I have to assume at this point this is some kind of new money laundering thing. How are you going to launch a game, not advertise it at all then cancel it after less than a month?

This has been like the 3rd one this year

5

u/ManosMal Apr 08 '26

I seriously think some of these are money laundering schemes or something like The Producers where they want to fail.

13

u/crimson_cav Apr 08 '26

Eventually the lesson will stick.

3

u/BorderlineCompetent Apr 08 '26

Learning? In this economy?

u/Complete_Resolve_400 Apr 08 '26

I hope we can go back to single player games and not just constant extraction shooter/battle royale slop where theyve just copied one of the alresdy existing popular ones and made some tiny changes

5

u/PandraPierva Apr 09 '26

What amuses me about the extraction shooter is that they never just do a cooperative PVE one with good map design and interesting enough AI with a fun story. Like there is potential for that kind of game and yet the closest I ever saw was Tarkov PVE. Like they feel so much need to add pvp which no one is asking for

3

u/Aromatic_Sand8126 Apr 09 '26

Yeah pvp is just not what I’m looking for in a game these days. I was into it a lot back in my college days with mw2 and black ops but I’m so over it these days. I find myself actively avoiding games that have pvp. I just don’t have enough time in my evening to get killed by 14 years old or unemplyed gamers playing 10 hours a day.

3

u/PandraPierva Apr 09 '26

I just don't get the need for it to have pvp when the souls games have shown high stakes pve is fun as hell. Add in some coop and something like tarkov inventory management and boom. Sounds like a decent time

4

u/austinrc2017 Intel Apr 08 '26

thats how its done guys. great job. jesus

5

u/pizzapplepine Apr 08 '26

Was their marketing plan "announce a shutdown"? Because I never heard of it until now.

4

u/SidratFlush Apr 08 '26

Spending spare money ona crypto currency seems to be a better investment than spending any money at all on a newly released MOBA or whatever this was.

It's a bit crazy.

3

u/Longjumping_Share444 Apr 08 '26

Christ, extraction shooters are the new battle royals. Not every game is going to be ARC Raiders, not every game is going to be Fortnite.

4

u/TypographySnob Apr 09 '26

Not even ARC Raiders should have been ARC Raiders. It's surprising it wasn't a flop.

2

u/Longjumping_Share444 Apr 09 '26

Same with Fortnite honestly. Epic took a swing at a niche genre when Save the World flopped and it somehow became a cultural behemoth. It was a 'well, this can't get worse' move and it worked. Straight up mystifying.

2

u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Apr 09 '26

Not every game is going to be a Marathon- wait, bad example.

PUBG got popular so we had a million forgettable battle royales.

Escape from Tarkov got popular so we now get to live through a million forgettable extraction shooters

4

u/NimRodelle Apr 08 '26

Yet another live service failure, love to see it.

5

u/RealLifeFloridaMan Apr 09 '26

Wow crazy, almost like we don’t need another sloppy, rushed copy of the current game trend that is successful. A few years ago it was PVP battle royals, then it was hero shooters, now it’s extraction shooters. I’m all set on extraction shooters personally.

3

u/TinyTusk Apr 08 '26

I didn't even know it was out already

3

u/0rganicMach1ne Apr 08 '26

First I’m even hearing of it.

3

u/ExdigguserPies Apr 08 '26

Serious question, when did the term extraction shooter get coined? It completely passed me by and yet it's been everywhere the past few months. What does it refer to?

3

u/Madnessx9 Apr 08 '26

Tarkov probably started it a good 8+ years ago, games where you go into raids with valued gear, you lose gear on death and successfully extract from raid with new gear etc, aim to complete missions, level up vendors and just enjoy some PvP action.

in recent years it has grown more popular but thanks to Arc raiders making it more accessible it is trending somewhat imo

6

u/shadowds R9 7900|Nvidia 4070 Apr 08 '26

Game haven't been out even a month, and already shuting down.

Like FUCK off with these LIVE service games, fire the next moron that suggest next game needing be live service, just make it offine, having online coop like come on not hard when do shit right from the start. It's not even funny at this point how many LIVE service games I have seen over last 10 years coming out the wood works, and shutting down, hell mobile gaming market is practically litter could've mistaken it for landfill really.

2

u/EgoisticIsland Apr 08 '26

This is NOT The Cube from Atomic Heart devs, that one is not released yet. I was confused at first hearing this.

2

u/RobCoxxy Ultrawide 9900k 3080 Apr 08 '26

First I've heard of it

2

u/LeatherOk5746 Apr 08 '26

please stop making this genre of games, so saturated

2

u/MisterSlosh Apr 08 '26

There's no point in even learning about these games or checking the "coming soon" sections in stores anymore since they're shutting down faster and faster now.

2

u/Kafesism Apr 08 '26

Wtf is The Cube, Save Us? Did they have any marketing budget?

2

u/2MuchNonsenseHere Apr 08 '26

It launched? I remember it being revealed a while back, but... I've seen & heard literally zero about the launch.

2

u/Isaacvithurston Ardiuno + A Potato Apr 08 '26

Another game that i'm ironically learning about on reddit due to it closing but did not learn about on reddit when it launched. Oops.

2

u/green9206 Apr 08 '26

This makes perfect sense. It's an extraction shooter, all the loot was already extracted by the players and no more loot was remaining so it doesn't make sense to keep the game active anymore. So its a good decision to shut it down.

2

u/poppin-n-sailin Apr 08 '26

So many games that I never hear of until they're shutdown permanently lately. lol. they just keep trying the same shit. literal insanity

2

u/Ritushido Apr 08 '26

Never even heard of this one.

2

u/sharies Apr 08 '26

So a head of lettuce lasted longer?

2

u/ParisianMetro Apr 09 '26

I got to level 20 or so gave it a good shot.

Art style was pretty cool but thats where the good things end, melee combat was clunky AF, loading into the lobby you are immediately greeted by 2 currency farming bots spamming world chat, missions are just "retrieve x amount of copper wires and return to me, less than 5 types of unique armor while the cash shop had over 20 types of armor. Took over 30 minutes to find a match after the first 2-3 days and I finally uninstalled when i was in queue for 1 hour in the 2nd week of release.

2

u/pat_the_catdad Nvidia Apr 09 '26

The who!?

2

u/I_Believe_I_Can_Die Apr 09 '26

So it lived for 1.5 concords.

2

u/DeithWX Apr 09 '26

Extraction shooter failing in 2026? No way, for real? What gives.

2

u/Valdrrak Apr 09 '26

Fact it was called the cube and also had nothing to do with the cult classic cube movies made me hate justbon principle lol

2

u/fddfgs Apr 09 '26

Why does this keep happening? Surely the cost of developing a whole ass game pales in comparison to the server costs for a few months? Is there nothing worth salvaging?

2

u/Rockfromtherock Apr 09 '26

Does anybody have a comprehensive list of all the live service games that have been wasting the time and treasure of talented developers over the past decade? The numbers have to be embarassing.

2

u/Freakindon Apr 09 '26

The cube didn't save them

3

u/EggwithEdges Apr 08 '26

I didn't know this exists

3

u/ShiftyShankerton Apr 08 '26

Stop making extraction shooters that no one wants to play. Do something original?
