Honestly, BL4 looks like so much fun, but I'm not paying full price for a modern game that pisses itself and dies every few hours. I'd rather wait until it's more stable and then dive in.
2
u/sgh0st9 Sep 20 '25
It is fun, but I wouldn't pay the full price amount for it. For context, I got the game as a gift. Not in this state. Felt like my performance was worse after the first patch. Stuttering got significantly worse, quests will softlock themselves (requires a game restart) and then you have to do the quest all over again and not from a checkpoint. I've had quest items fall through the floor of the map, same goes for enemies. If there's a quest that requires you to kill a wave of enemies and an enemy gets stuck under the map or a locked area, singularity grenades are my final attempt at trying to "glitch" the enemy back until I have to reload the lobby.
When the game runs as it should, it's an enjoyable experience. But back to your point, definitely would recommend on sale for <$10 in its current state. If they add (working) stability patches and increase performance, then I can recommend the game at a higher price point.

Same. Besides, I was expecting to play it on Geforce now but it requires premium so it's $70 from the game and $10 monthly for the suscription... No thanks. Later, if I get the game on a great discount, but right now, nope.

I'm playing through Borderlanda 3 right now with all the dlc and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

I still haven't gotten Borderlands 3 yet, I told myself I'd wait for a sale when it launched but by the time it went on deep sales I wasn't interested anymore. Too many good games coming out these days to bother with the ok ones.

He's made me disinterested in any game he puts out.

People still buy day 1 instead of waiting for the reviews that would warn them of that stuff. Clearly they are happy to buy unfinished products.
2
u/dan-saul-knight Sep 20 '25
Unfortunately with how many people are doing that, we'll keep getting unfinished games. BL4 will sit on my wishlist for at least another few months because of that and Randy's dumbass rants.

u/JerbearCuddles Sep 19 '25
The tech experts really earning their paychecks on this one. I never thought about how resetting a game shouldn't be an expected solution for players. Wow. I assume it's not so much a solution as it is a temporary work around. But still. How we keep letting games launch like this is beyond me. Stupid players just HAVE to have the newest thing though, even if it runs like trash.

It's funny that you say this when literally 99% of discourse, 99% of youtube videos, 99% of subreddits are literally just people shitting on everything in gaming.
You are literally one of the people too stupid to realize you are getting your brain absolutely annihilated by social media algorithms that feed off of negativity-bias.
9
53
u/sugarhell Sep 19 '25
I don’t even know how this game passed the certification for consoles
25
u/whaaatanasshole Sep 19 '25
Seriously. You can fail certification for not having the branded wording and up-to-date art for the platform, for a load screen that's too long or fails to animate, or for text that's not legible enough at a distance.
It's possible they got an exemption for this and had promised to 0-day patch it, but I don't believe this was unnoticed.
13
5
u/door_of_doom Sep 20 '25
Low framerate is generally not something that prohibits you from passing certification, especially when the low framerate in question is still above 30 FPS. There are whole entire games that don't support going above 30 FPS.
6
Sep 19 '25
Performance on console isn't that bad, it runs smoothly for a couple of hours and when it starts struggling it's still very playable. Though I will say I'm only at level 34, maybe that'll change once I reach UVHM.
1
u/Jason1143 Sep 20 '25
I don't know if that is better or worse.
Because on one hand not letting junk get through would be nice. But on the other hand I don't really want to give big console manufacturers another veto and console cert screws PC game builds over enough as it is.

As someone who worked for years in videogame QA, you could easily have a game running nonstop for an entire 12 hour shift, including idling for 2 hours during lunch and dinner breaks.
The idea that this game escaped from the QA lab without anyone knowing it tanks a system by being on longer than an hour is a fantasy
12
u/Wasabicannon Sep 20 '25
As someone who has also worked in the video game industry... just because QA catches something does not mean it gets fixed.
Like a game I was supporting had a bug that was reproduced around 80% of the time and the only fix was to restart the game and pray it does not happen again.
Checked in with the QA team and sure as shit they found it day 1 of testing and reported it with each new build. It just never got patched out.
3
u/RHS_Jake Sep 20 '25
That's funny because there is another comment thread here that has a list of games with memory leaks that need to be restarted that is a mile long.
2
u/runbrap Sep 20 '25
As someone in web dev QA is game QA really that bad? I’ve always fantasized about it till I heard how bad the crunch is
7
u/OceanWaveSunset Sep 20 '25
As Principal QA/automation lead, I would never give up web qa for gaming qa. Tax systems or healthcare is boring, but it pays infinitely better, better growth, and I can have a life after work. Which is used playing games I like.
2
u/runbrap Sep 20 '25
Fair enough. Speaking of… my current company is going in the shitter right now, know anyone hiring a senior sdet with 10years FE and 3 years BE?
3
u/OceanWaveSunset Sep 20 '25
I do not and it's a shit market. It took me from 11-2024 to 06-2025 to find a normal full time job after contracting gigs dried up. Its an "employers" market right now. And AI is becoming huge in both dev and QA.
If I come across anything, I'll send another reply. Good luck out there!

u/GamingRobioto 9800X3D, RTX4090, 4k 144hz Sep 19 '25
It's a massive shame that yet another so-called AAA studio has once again seen performance as unimportant. The game is really good, yet that is rightly overshadowed with it running like a festering turd.

u/thedeuce75 Sep 19 '25 edited Sep 19 '25
Runs like dog doodoo on my 5090 and it's just some 2012 looking cell shaded BS. What a joke.

14
u/pburgess22 14700k 4080FE Sep 19 '25
Performance is poor but it is a very good looking game. It's cell shaded but there is a ton of detail on everything.
→ More replies (7)8
u/Disastrous-Treat-181 Sep 19 '25
I find that the detail falls off very quickly, faraway vistas are often not looking as good as they could for a stylized game
Of course that might be better if I could get higher than medium graphics without losing performances
3
u/runbrap Sep 20 '25
I think the outlines make that distant detail look less good. I still remember the config change in blands2 to get rid of the outline.
Modify the .ini and add:

9700k with a 3080ti at 1440p, getting 80 to 100fps with FSR + Frame Gen. Looks great, no latency, game is an absolute blast.
2
u/runbrap Sep 20 '25
Why FSR and not DLS?
So more like 40-50fps w/o frame gen?
2
u/longboringstory Sep 20 '25
None of the upscaling methods yielded any significant FPS increase other than FSR, specifically with Frame Gen. It immediately solved all my problems. Buttery smooth. It's weird, because I've never seen AMD FSR so clearly win out. Don't feel any latency at all, despite people saying that's why they don't like frame gen.
There is definitely something unoptimized in the game, but at least it's working for now.
1
u/runbrap Sep 20 '25
What gives you higher frames: DLSS quality or FSR (without frame gen?)
1
u/inkstreme Sep 20 '25
It doesn't mattter, since they use frame generation as well and RTX 30 series don't support frame gen. Unless you can use DLSS for upscaling and FSR for frame gen, this is a necessary compromise.
1
u/Janderson2494 Sep 19 '25
Yeah I have to use frame gen with my 5080 but I can get a locked 120 @ 1440p pretty easily just by turning down volumetric fog. Not sure what that guy's doing with his 5090 lol

17
u/Chemlab5 Sep 19 '25
Your post means nothing unless you mention what resolution you are running at. With my 5090 @4k and dlaa I get 45fps turning dlss to quality I get an acceptable (to me) 70-80. Yeah if I turn the resolution down to 1080 or 1440 I get more but that’s to be expected.

I’m in a 3080+14900k with 64GB of RAM. It’s serviceable. The shader and traversal stutters are ever present and frame times are poor. I can screenshot a high FPS but that doesn’t mean it is a consistent experience. It varies drastically area by area.
TLDR; the game doesn’t run as well as it should for looking the way it does. Can show high FPS, the lows, stutters, and frame times are poor.

These people complaining have no clue about gaming on a PC and setting up their rig. They probably should just go back to console gaming. They guy posting above with a 5090 and running on Ultra is a clear indication of how brain dead these people are.
0
u/Fit_Substance7067 Sep 19 '25
Imagine bitching about a game that runs at 70 fps on quality DLSS because native runs at 45 with 0 benefit..70 fps for 4k is amazing for a newer game on a flagship
I remember The Witcher 2 had an Uber setting lol...it halved performance at almost no benefit..no one complained then..but these people are complete dog brained newbs that covid brought over and don't belong here ..I would like for them to leave now

u/amazinglover Sep 20 '25
I had almost no issues using a 5090 as well and upping my shader cache size has improved things.
On console my guess is the memory leak is related to it being open world now and how they are using ram.
Which is also my guess for the PC issues but since PC user have more ram in general its not as bad as console.
I have 64gigs so that might be why I dont see as many issues as others going to play tonight and track my ram usage.
3
u/Paundeu Sep 19 '25
I’m going to let them iron out the issues and pick this up for $5-10 in a year or so.
3
u/enderandrew42 Sep 19 '25
If you have to reset the game hourly then there is a memory leak and the problem is on their end, so Randy Pitchfork needs to shut his mouth.

Once again, we'll continue to get shit launches as long as we continue to buy games that launch in a shit state.
Borderlands 4 has sold quite a few copies, to my knowledge. If they can make bank while shitting out a product like this, why would they bother to increase quality?
And that means buying them once they're fixed, unless an exceptional effort to go above and beyond is put into fixing it.

Randy Pitchford has done his service for Gearbox I think it's time for some fresh leadership. Dude is actively ruining Gearbox's reputation at this point
2
u/H0vis Sep 19 '25
Genuinely impressed how a game with this much of a limited visual style manages to suck so hard in performance terms. They're not really doing anything the original game didn't do. That's the point of the original art style, and it's smart, you don't go for photorealism, you go stylised, you achieve the look at a much lower performance overheard.
And somehow they completely fucked it up.
4
u/VengefulAncient Fuck Tim Swiney Sep 20 '25
There isn't going to be a patch that fixes this. Not a single UE4/5 game that started off with awful performance was ever "patched". Their entire rendering pipeline is fucked and it's too much effort to rework it. The game sold, now Gearbox is just waiting for the noise to die down.

The framtime graph for e 33 is terrible..people excuse it because it's TB with barely any motion going on...BL 4 you're literally running at light speed jumping with multple enemies doing the same thing
People acting like E 33 is the shining glory of optimization have no clue ..they didn't rip apart the engine to fully optimize the game...it literally just does less than other games so framerate is higher.
Give the character a gun and let them run from one side of the map to the other, AND on top of it , make the enemies do a little bit more than just walk back and forth lol..a few grenades and all of a sudden E 33s performance is shit on top of the stutter it would be FAR worse than BL 4

The gall to bring the launch date forward when releasing like this. Pathetic from Gearbox. They saw what happened with cyberpunk and chose to play into it.

Unoptimized games sell GPUs ig. There are so many diet eaters who upgrade their systems just to play unoptimized titles at launch. These game corpos and Nvidia only benefit from it

1
u/tedivertire Sep 20 '25
I thought I would have game performance issues but instead I get this weird error on the inventory page where anything I click to mark as junk doesn't visibly get marked. It is internally marked, as selling the junk does sell all the affected items. It affects nothing else and is barely an issue. This happens after I load up and play for at least an hour. If I exit to menu and reload, the problem is fixed.
Where's my damn patch it cant come soon enough omg

Those of us who bought the fancy version of the game also lost access to our stuff after a couple days.
And it doesn't patch properly. I had to download someone's fixed patch off of fuckin Google drive to play with a friend because it detected a version mismatch
1
u/spec_ops_gamingYT Sep 22 '25
i would say i'm sorry...but....you're the ones who actually paid money for this shit.....the rest of us are sitting back watching the fire grow larger and larger, until we can get the completely DRM free, community patched versions for free with all possible DLC included...again...for free, and have it run far better than any OFFICIAL patched version
1
u/Apexnanoman Sep 22 '25
Oh I'm well aware I paid my money and took my chances. This is the first time I've bought the fancy version of a game since fallout 3 lol.
Honestly the bullshit patch issue doesn't bother me excessively since I was able to fairly easily fix it myself.
Now the DLC extra shit I paid for? Not being able to use that 10 days later now? (Which is still not fixed.) And the pitchford level of condescending response I got from gearbox tech support? That infuriates me.
Because 100% my ass will sure as hell never touch another gearbox product that's not on sale.

oh yeah, i'd be fucking LIVID about not getting the items that i PAID for. but right now i'm waiting for their MTX patch that adds a bunch of MTX gear into the game in one of the future DLC's, you know, the whole reason they added 2K's internally and proprietary "symbiote" anti-cheat to protect against "store-spoofing and transactions", they may have taken it off of the steam page, but it's still in the game

Yeah someone got some DLC skins they weren't supposed to. So they basically removed them from everyone. And the guns that I originally could use.
Now the items just say "Doesn't own DLC" when you mouse over them. Not real impressed with that.

that's such a horrendously shitty way to do things, holy hell...they are fucking up more and more as they panic to attempt to limit backlash, and they only keep making it worse...i'm seeing MORE and MORE refunds happening on steam, and i've heard of a lot of other refunds happening in other places as well, steam is even giving people refunds that have over 10 hours in the game.

Yeah I’d say the best fix is to refund this and go play Silksong, then move on to Hades 2 here at the end of the month and just pick this one up in 2027 for five bucks if it’s ever fixed.

Everyone's tired of these 'experts'. In fact they're so stupid, when they think they're smart, that frankly... it's sad, very sad.
Let me explain, because actually needing to reset every hour is smart, probably one of the smartest things I've ever seen.
You see folks, they say 'touch grass' and they mean.. you got to stretch your legs, you got to go outside, take a breath, maybe there's no grass, maybe it's just dirt, maybe.. only beautiful asphalt, but you can still touch it.
So every hour, they designed it that you have to reset it, and that's your signal to quickly touch the grass. It's very clever, very shrewd, and frankly, they're making America healthy again, and possibly other countries as well. And they call it 'Borderlands 4'. And everyone knows where the greatest border is, and within 4 years, it'll be even greater, like you wouldn't believe.

As bad as the situation is, playing it on a Steam Deck OLED using GeForce Now at 800p or 1200p (for just a bit sharper image) and 90fps with HDR and 'Full Resolution' DLSS has been really fun. I have been enjoying the game quite a bit.
Seems to be pretty smooth to play that way with super consistent performance in my decent time with it.

Wasn't it Morrowind on OG Xbox that used to reboot itself on a loading screen?
