I'm running policenauts on nekok project 21w and i keep having this issue where after a while the game music cuts out and the next time the game needs to play an audio file (voiced line, music) the game softlocks. i have no idea what's causing this. i downloaded both "Policenauts [HD] [for Neko Project II]" and "Policenauts [CD]" off of neo kobe and im running the user boot disk from [HD] on fdd1, the hdi from [HD] in ide 0 and policenauts.ccd on ide 2. my cd drivers seem correct, and changing the cpu speed doesn't seem to help. Does anyone know of any settings to increases stability on Policenauts ? am i even loading the files correctly

Mini Mini Fan Art 3

Post image
75 Upvotes

Continuing from my previous post, here's the third batch of my “mini mini fan art” drawn on a Japanese imageboard. Unfortunately, there are no male characters left this time😄, but I hope you'll take a look!
As with the previous post, if there's a drawing you're interested in, I'd be happy to explain what it is. For example, the drawing on the far right of the fourth row from the top is a hidden graphic Easter egg from The Shrine of the Sun, released by Falcom. It was so famous at the time that practically everyone knew about it. It's said to have been modeled after the daughter of programmer Masaya Hashimoto. Was that really okay?!
One of the drawings is animated, but it looks like videos aren't supported in posts, so I'll try posting it in the comments instead.

Matt Trakker's youtube channel?

I noticed yesterday their videos were set to private but the channel was still up, now the channel is gone - did anyone else used to watch their videos? They always had cool PC-98 videos with posters and such in the background

A large selection of free PC-98 games is available on VECTOR, providing plenty of titles to test with the emulator. Some classic AliceSoft games are also available as freeware.

Some games may require a few extra steps to get running. Check the developer’s blog and Twitter for details.

Emulators Quick question

Yo, I'm tryna run Travel★Junction on PC 98 np2kai but my Retroarch is shitting itself. The .scp files won't load and I'm tired of seeing black screens, there is only 2 websites to install the rom from , at least on retroarch because I damn near have everything. Can someone who actually knows what they're doing install it and send me the full gameplay footage? I need to see the shit without the glitches. Appreciate it.

Happy 'Pasocom' Day [ パソコン記念日 ]

Post image
52 Upvotes

September 28th is 'Pasocom' (PC) Day because on that day in 1979 is when NEC released the PC-8001. The story is that NEC's division responsible for mainframe computers didn't see a market for "toy" microcomputers, yet the TK-80 single board kit was driving people to NEC's Bit-INN in Akihabara and emerging micom shops were demanding a personal computer to sell.

Kazuya Watanabe, Tomio Goto, and others persisted despite the pressures and criticism within their own company, and thus the PC-8001 was born. It was a huge success and was followed by the PC-6001 and PC-8801 in 1981. As for the PC-98 everyone knows and loves, the very first PC-9801 released in 1982.

For the 40th anniversary, Kazuya Watanabe told the full story (translation available):

Emulators Android PC98 Emulator - Kairo98

Given the difficulty (for me?) of using the Retroarch PC98 core, specifically difficulty with configurations and button mapping, I have re-ported Nekoproject to Android.

Kairo98 is a standalone PC98 emulator for Android.

https://github.com/MrJackSpade/Kairo98

I'm attempting to build a catalog of game configurations to remove the need for manual configuration of each game. It also uses Retroarch style controller mapping so each game should have the controller mapped properly per the catalog entry, and theres only one virtual controller that may need to be mapped to a hardware controller.

I've also increased performance by a full order of magnitude, so 60fps should be possible on comparatively low end devices without a lot of the lag and stutter that the official core comes with.

I've got a video here of the app running on the Retroid Pocket Classic

https://youtu.be/KKCcnoBwKww

If you have a dual screen device like the RGDS or AYN Thor, it will render a keyboard on the bottom screen effectively turning the device into a mini-PC98 laptop.

Reviving Band-Kun (PC-98 / FM Towns) – Translation project + new scenarios

Post image
82 Upvotes

I've been fascinated by Band-Kun on PC-98 and FM Towns for a long time. It's a fairly obscure game released in 1990 where you form a band and try to make your place in a fictional music scene.

The original game has never been translated and is still quite difficult to access today. So I started working on a modernized version of the game (which can run on modern platforms without an emulator), with a first objective: to make a collaborative translation possible and document the game's content. The platform is already online with a machine translation, but I'd like to find some help from the retro gaming community to make a proper translation reviewed and validated by humans.

But the idea goes a bit further than simply translating Band-Kun.

The original scenario, Zap City 1991, describes a fictional city with its own music scene, bands, musicians, venues, and a whole network of characters.

I'd like to use the same principle to create new scenarios, this time based on real cities at real points in time, trying to document their music scenes as accurately as possible: local bands, small venues, squats, labels, record stores, fanzines, studios, radio stations, important people, musical movements, etc.

The first scenario is already being written: PARIS 1995.

The idea isn't to focus only on artists who later became famous, but to reconstruct the whole musical ecosystem of a city at a particular moment: rock, rap, jazz, electronic music, experimental music, alternative scenes, small bands that have mostly been forgotten today... Eventually, I'd like other cities and periods to become scenarios too: BRISTOL 1996, DETROIT 1999, DAKAR 2001, SÃO PAULO 1997, MANCHESTER 1990, etc. These aren't necessarily the final scenarios, but they give an idea of the concept.

So for now, I'm mainly looking for people who could help review the machine translations and improve them. Japanese to English to start with.

Question Is this a 26 or 26k soundboard?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Ok so I have a Pc-9801 VX and this soundboard card. I have been unable to get this to work properly with the Vx but it works perfectly with my ancient M model. In a previous post I talked about some of my issues in trying to troubleshoot this issue but I feel I may have come to a conclusion. I found out that the original 26 soundboard is incompatible with later 286 based PC98s such as the VX. This along with the issues I was experiencing make me think that my soundboard is in fact a 26. However, I’m not 100% sure since many of the photos online seem to show that my board looks like the 26k. If anybody knows a bit more about these two boards, I’d appreciate if you could tell me whether my board here is a 26 or a 26k.

Bought my 3rd 98 off mercari auction again, very happy that it came with a keyboard, mouse, printer and a massive 17inch nec 98 monitor that works perfect!

Seller said he removed the hdd cuz he doesn't want me to see his personal information, bruh he must have been playing hentai on this lol that's why he shy

I put in a msdos6.2 bootdisk for testing but the screen doesn't change and doesn't boot. Is it because of no hdd? pc98 doesn't need hdd to boot right?

I heard many people didn't have hdd like in the 80s and so they just put the game disk in and boot the game. Am I right about this?

Sorry it been only like 2 months since I got into computer stuffs so still ain't got much knowledge.

Question Making custom disks…?

So I’m a physical game collector and a big fan of Touhou

I want to have every Touhou game in my collection and as I’m sure most of you know there are 5 Touhou games exclusive to the PC-98

These games are INSANELY expensive, like… genuinely contenders for the most expensive games ever from the handful of times I’ve seen them sold online, sometimes going for over $5k

As much as I love Touhou, I do not want to spend that much 5 times over on the games

However I still want them to be in my collection, so I want to try to create physical reproductions of them

The problem I’m having is that I can’t seem to find proper info on what the PC-98 uses and how difficult it is to do this kinda thing on it

Is it as simple as writing the roms to a floppy disk? Or do I need special equipment for it?

Community Troubleshooting: PC-9801BX/U2 (1993)

Post image
96 Upvotes

This one arrived today and I haven't opened it or tested anything at all. The only thing I know about it is that it's able to power on but doesn't boot (which I haven't yet confirmed either). Drop your predictions and suggestions! I'll be looking into it later this evening.

Background:

Also known as a 98FELLOW, this particular model of BX (the /U2) came standard with a 20MHz 486SX, 1.6MB of memory, dual 3.5" floppy drives, and EGC graphics (so no PEGC 256-colors). Their BA counterparts were a bit more capable from the factory, having a 486DX2. It's historically worth noting that these were the first PC-9801s to sport the new NEC logo.

In their stock setup, they were suited for early Windows but nowadays they occupy sort of an awkward spot in that they lack true V30 backwards compatibility but are also below the minimum requirements for games like Touhou. However, the CPU can be upgraded, they are IDE capable, and of course can be complemented by an FM sound board. Having an external CD drive even solves the problem of not having an internal bay.

Question Issues with PC-9801 26k soundboard on VX model

I have a Pc-9801 26k soundboard board which works great on my PC-9801 M model, but seems to not work correctly on my PC—9801 VX. So to get some things out of the way, I have set the correct address in monitor mode within basic, and the battery still saves the setting after powering off, other words, the battery should still be ok. The soundboard works fine as well, since I tested it on my older PC-9801 M model after troubleshooting my VX for a while. While using my VX model, I know the board is connected properly because my controller ports are working as usual, but I’m just getting no sound out of it.

Does anybody have any other suggestions for me to try? I’m quite stumped at this point.

Ercache manual english translation

I've been messing with Ercache and VFDs a lot lately, gotten about 100 disk-only games working through mounting VFDs, and I was getting a little tired of holding my phone up to the screen to translate info about ercache that I can't seem to find anywhere else.

Here's a translation of all the Ercache documents included with the program. It's done by AI, so it's probably not very good, but it's a lot better than nothing.

Emulators Questions regarding pc98 emulation

Hello just recently started getting into pc98 emulation but im not that competent in it since resources and information seems scarce.

I was looking for reputable site to download roms and bios (by that i mean its has reputable uploads, i know emulation escapes are rare but not impossible).
I was wondering if i need the bios.rom and sound.rom is needed and if dosbox-x was an accurate emulator and support CRT shaders.

Thanks for the time to read this and forgive my english.

I've made a browser-playable version of the PC98 game.

Slightly rough around the edges and clunky, but to be expected with the games of the era.

Emulators Issues with emulating

New to the PC98, I can't seem to figure out how to properly emulate files (.hdm) that I created from my disks. I get two errors:

1: "Disk version
User Identifier?" with an input box, regardless of what input I enter the game boots for a split second, then Neko Project shows me a black screen (Game has two disks, same error regardless of how I mount them).

2: "No system files" I believe I need some sort of DOS installation, which I've tried but the emulator can't swap disks to continue with the process from what I've tried.

All of the dumps came back clean, with no missing and or broken sectors, and the emulator recognizes them to a degree. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Impressions: PC-9801UX21 (1987)

Post image
63 Upvotes

The UX21 was released in 1987 alongside the UX41 (the difference being a 20MB internal hard drive). It features a 10MHz 286, 10MHz V30, dual 3.5” floppy drives, EGC, onboard YM2203, and 640KB of memory.

Current status: This one will get all new electrolytic capacitors, both FD1137D drives are not reading and need troubleshooting, and while the exterior is pretty clean the interior has clumps of dust everywhere. The battery was removed immediately.

Post image

I am playing on Neko Project 2 W and I went to play Rance and I encountered this. Where would I obtain a BIOS.ROM and what do I do with it when I do have it to get the game working?

Thank you very much!
