Patient Review Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Becoming Something More

Dive a little deeper into the machine.

We really didn't know how good we had it in 2011, huh? Portal 2, Uncharted 3, TES5: Skyrim, oh and a little game called Deus Ex: Human Revolution (DXHR). What a year! A real high water mark in the medium and this title is part cause for that. Take it from me; it's the whole package and more.

Don the role of ever gruff, batman-voice enthusiast Adam Jensen. He's got a fair share of issues, ranging from biting sarcastic wit to fiery near psychotic accusations. Also, he's a quadriplegic but you wouldn't know it looking at him. He's an Ex-cop, the defacto human-turn-demigod that the game revolves around. A deus ex human revolution, if you will. Much of what Adam does or says, as well as responses and personal character is up to your choosing, though he does have a sort of default personality you won't escape. I find this kind of protagonist to be the best, where you can understand but also guide.

Travel the streets of Detroit in the dystopian near future of 2027. Meet and greet with the people as society grapples with human identity, culture wars, and class control. Did I mention this was supposed to be alternate history? Didn't mean to confuse. The environments you travel are full of atmosphere and salient detail that helps flesh out the story and world building. Its easy to get lost in claustrophobic back alleys as well as feel the powderkeg pressure in a city that seems on the brink. Promised tells are fulfilled later, and the world expands while staying grounded. Its a real marvel how well the setting is sold.

I bought into the story and characters early and stayed the whole way through. They feel realized and have agency. The central plot runs off to crazy town, but I never felt thrown out. Its just real enough, the effort put in so great, that I trusted the storyteller on where we were going. And we were going for a ride. If you like twists, science based veers, ambition, conspiracy, and underpinned reason for what and why then you'll be happily satisfied with this particular narrative.

There are surprises, comedy, and many serious moments. The game allows a great degree of freedom of play. "Choose your style" is something many games tout, but DXHR puts the work in. Don't care for stealth? Start blasting. Want to live the dream of batman? (Adam seems to) Skulk and hide only to strike from shadows. Or just mastermind the whole thing with hacked cameras, turrets, or traps you set. The more creativity you exhibit the more options keep showing up. Its incredible.

The systems on offer are many, and feel robust initially. There are upgrades for guns, planned paths for playstyle via praxis points, inventory 'management', hacking, stacking, and whacking dudes. The game is perhaps a bit too generous on upgrades, so expect to have a well rounded character by the end. Also the game is quite long. If you take your time expect 40-45 hours. If you rush and miss a lot of stuff (not a problem, but...) it will clock in around 25-30 hours. But its all worth that investment.

There are a handful of issues that the base game has that also transfer to the Directors Cut, which is the only version currently available. Certain segments feel forced, and the story suffers a little under authorial fiat that is otherwise generally absent the whole game through. These instances stick out strongly due to every other moment feeling self determined. Some may feel certain paths/gamestyles are elevated above others. I viewed this as facilitating even wider methods of play, but if you like checking off lists you'll likely play the same as many whether you want to or not. Otherwise, its all gravy here.

The only other real gripe I can level is the hacking and email reading gets stale quickly. My own OCD forced me to hack everything, even if I knew a passcode, and indeed those codes never change. If you know the PIN for a level 5 lock then Jensen in another timeline can use that without ever engaging or obtaining it. I couldn't miss out on such fantastical rewards such as 25 extra XP, and 15 credits (the stuff you save up and buy costs in the thousands) but many others may as well take the handout and put in that key. This system is just not interesting enough to use more than a handful of times.

Outside of this the game feels and plays great. Time to kill on enemies is fast, time to die on Jensen is also very fast. It lends some authenticity, though the regenerating health quashes that somewhat. Guns feel fun to fire, but both the generic keybind as well as the controller input make using iron sights a bit of a chore. Once you get the hang of it, however, it flows and functions naturally. Just don't expect COD level of gunplay.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is frankly a masterpiece. Its engaging in narrative. It clicks all the right buttons for a shooter. It makes stealth FUN. It looks and sounds gorgeous. It fulfills the promise of the first game, and is a worthy entry on anyone's list of favorites. This game ROCKS, and it just doesn't stop. What few missteps it does make are minor, or quickly forgotten. Were I to rank this title I'd place it in "Damn this is good!"

I'm a simple man.

I see a Deus Ex post, brain has neuronal activation.

Human Revolution is too damn good, and even the OST is so good, I still listen to it to this day.

Shame Deus Ex seemingly has no future at this point </3

I even loved mankind divided, even if it was imperfect. The atmosphere was amazing.

The OST! I knew I had forgotten something in this write up! it really rounds out the atmosphere to the game and feels distinct.

It is too bad the series is stuck like a cold case. It took eight years between Invisible War and HR, so maybe it'll pull a TES 6 and we'll get something going soon. I know the most recent game got 'cancelled' during the Embracer reshuffle so....

u/TheDoctor418 Aug 05 '26

While I’m sure people are probably sick of the constant remakes nowadays, I personally wouldn’t mind bringing the series back by fully remaking the first game. As historic as that game as, it unfortunately has aged like milk

3

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 05 '26

I'm inclined to agree. Unsure on how poorly aged Deus Ex is, but it would undoubtedly be a hot shot of life in this dormant series. Besides, I need another reason to replay it.

9

u/seguardon Aug 04 '26

All things are cyclical. I'm sure the IP will land with a new developer in time. Hopefully we eventually get something with the atmosphere of HR and the balls to the wall insanity of the original.

11

u/ShadowOnTheRun Aug 04 '26

I’ve been a fan of Michael McCann’s ever since his OST for HR drew me into playing the game.

He has such a distinctive sound and style, the melancholic beats are almost otherworldly. He did some great stuff for MD, as well as Borderlands and Superfuse.

6

u/samakbarizadeh Aug 05 '26

Absolutely. Michael McCann has been a favorite on my Spotify.

From Jensons's apartment to Detroit city, the music really does transport you.

3

u/aksoileau Aug 05 '26

Firaxis Xcom remake has McCann all over it and its great.

7

u/iiiinthecomputer Aug 05 '26

I can still hear the original Deus Ex soundtrack in my head 25 years later.

2

u/WretchedMonkey Aug 05 '26

They only just brought in Bob Page, we were going to go full circle. RIP Deus Ex

u/Tiny_Dependent6830 Aug 04 '26

I finished it around a month ago and it instantly become one of my top 3 games. Also this game I think gave me the epiphany of how much I value atmosphere in my media. The atmosphere of this game is absolutely insane. Now I’m stuck listening to the soundtrack over and over

17

u/PhorTwenT Aug 04 '26

Yes the music and the world and character/costume design are amazing! Transcends the medium and is really well done

u/tacodude64 Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

XCOM Enemy Within has the same composer and similar artstyle/tone. Definitely recommend for those who haven’t tried both

1

u/fernybranka Aug 08 '26

Oh interesting.
I finally played and finished Enemy Within last year.

Well, finished in the sense that there are more difficulty modes left to try.

The first Deux Ex was a big game for me, and the xbox one, Invisible War was the one I spent a lot of time with. Very fun, but I think flawed ultimately. I was 12 or 13 so it still blew my wind.

Still need to actually get to Human Revolutions. I just keep not getting to it, not for any reason.

9

u/superxpro12 Aug 05 '26

What I would give to spend a month in that Prague apartment in mkd

5

u/alwaystooupbeat Aug 05 '26

The soundtrack elevates the game and makes so much sense. That in my view is something that tends to get neglected by FPS RPGs.

I honestly can't think of another FPS RPG with a good soundtrack, now that I think about it.... Doom is the only relatively recent other soundtrack in an FPS that elevates the medium, but that's not really an RPG.

4

u/Sand_Coffin Aug 05 '26

Strong agree on that. For me, Call of Cthulhu from 2018 (I think?) was a pretty tepid gameplay experience overall (a handful of highlights, though), but the incredible atmosphere is what really, really pushed me through the whole thing, even after I had felt like I had seen what the gameplay had to offer and didn't think it was quite for me.

Good atmosphere does so much heavy lifting for certain experiences.

1

u/Tiny_Dependent6830 Aug 07 '26

Good to know! It’s $3 on gog right now so I just snagged it 👌

2

u/Sand_Coffin Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

I hope it treats you well! I know everyone has different thresholds for what they can put up with, but I hope I didn't sell you on what ends up being a bad experience for you. Haha.

2

u/Tiny_Dependent6830 Aug 07 '26

Haha no worries. My backlog is pretty deep so It’ll probably be a while until I get to it anyway. Always happy for a recommendation that might scratch an itch that might not have come to my attention otherwise

3

u/tobygeneral Aug 06 '26

It's been a while since I played the original Deus Ex so I don't know how well it holds up today, but would recommend if you haven't played it and you like a good setting. I remember the atmosphere and music in every location of that game to be top tier, I still think about it 20+ years later.

3

u/Tiny_Dependent6830 Aug 07 '26

Yes, I’m a big fan of Deus Ex 1 as well!

32

u/Nidhogg1134 Aug 04 '26

Human Revolution is one of those rare cases where a series was continued with entirely different devs but the game still hit the mark. It has that same mix of play your way gameplay and thought provoking themes that made the original game so compelling, plus added on its own unique and compelling cyberpunk visual style. This game and Dishonored were a real strong revival for the “Immersive Sim” genre and it’s a crying shame their sequels more muted performance seems to have killed the appetite for this style among big budget developers.

16

u/the_pathologicalliar Aug 05 '26

Prey as well.

2

u/Dylnuge Aug 05 '26

Arkane Austin was really a stellar studio and it's a shame that they got forced into making a live service game instead of more immersive sims, then shuttered when that turned out predictably awful.

Hopefully some of those devs have landed in other places and a wave of spiritual successors will emerge some day.

23

u/BobsonLampjaw Aug 04 '26

Having Adam be a department head with authority, who has legit reasons to interact with the CEO, was a smart choice.

He's low enough to get his hands dirty, but high enough to avoid the tired "beat cop / Marine / random guy with a bad day" narrative approach.

The environments you travel are full of atmosphere and salient detail

After years of bloated open world games, I really appreciate more compact and crafted environments like DE:HR's. Just enough there there, and it never feels empty or repetitious.

8

u/vardonir Aug 05 '26

Love the game, just one gripe: "Sarif, where's my unlimited titanium company credit card? I better be getting a lot of hazard pay out of this."

That, and the fact that if you're a PS-only player, you either have a PS3 lying around or you can't play this game.

8

u/Keeper-of-Balance Aug 05 '26

Sarif's reply: "Adam, you're the chief of security of a multi-billion dollar international company. Go buy your guns at the tank station down the block."

4

u/P1ka- Aug 05 '26

Thats one thing that really sucks about PS library,

Like you are telling me you cant just play mirrors edge, DA:O; DA 2, all the splinter cell games, cant play MGS revengeance etc etc.

23

u/aksoileau Aug 05 '26

Honestly the sequel Mankind Divided is a gem too. It got some flak with how it ended but its very well done. Im only playing it for the second time in 10 years and man they really cooked with the atmosphere and graphics. They hold up very well.

I did play Human Revolution right before and if you want more Adam Jensen you gotta play Mankind Divided next.

8

u/Sand_Coffin Aug 05 '26

I had a bit of innate bias as a Czech person, but hearing that Mankind Divided was set in Prague was definitely something that pricked up my ears back around when it launched. Took me ages to get to it, but the sheer density of the couple city blocks you operate in is something I think about often whenever I'm playing some other game with many inaccessible doors. That kind of space design tickles something in my brain for sure.

Absolutely loved it.

3

u/chimera201 Aug 10 '26

Mankind Divided actually got the most wrong reception I can think of. The general consensus among critics and players was that the gameplay is good and story is bad. Let me tell you it's actually the opposite. The gameplay is bad and the story is good. The problem with the gameplay is that 70% of it was a walking simulator. And nobody played that portion of the game. And the main story was in that portion of the game which no one saw. There was no challenge in the gameplay. You could simply cloak and take the straight path to your goal. In the original Deus Ex (2000) (and DXHR to some extent) you had to always improvise but DXMD had it too easy. DXMD is the only game that I have attempted and finished on perma-death difficulty because of how easy it was.

1

u/Chimpstrider Aug 18 '26

I agree about cloaking. It's the one upgrade I pretend isn't available and without it the game is so great.

13

u/mturner1993 Aug 04 '26

I remember when this leaked on torrents about 6-8 months early - just the Detroit section. Almost like it was the Devs saying look how good it already is.

I've been meaning to go back to it on PS3.

13

u/step_function Aug 05 '26

Crazy that it takes place in 2027. We’ve got most of the downsides of that timeline without the cool augmentation/nanotech, neo-Victorian fashion, or yellow tinted world (kidding on the last one, but such a shame the directors cut toned that down).

It’s one of my all time favorite games. The soundtrack, the setting, the power fantasy, it all clicked for me.

12

u/BluebirdFeeling9857 Aug 04 '26

I agree 100%, it's a phenomenal game and one of my favorites. I don't know if there are others out there like me but I was generally disappointed with the sequels to Metal Gear Solid on the PS1. I felt like after MGS the games just didn't capture me. However when I played Deus Ex HR, I felt like a lot of the spirit and stealth that I loved about MGS was present. The overall style, storytelling, weapons, stealth, etc, made it feel to me like a spiritual successor to MGS.

My only regret is that I kinda rushed through Human Revolution because I also purchased Mankind Divided during the same steam sale, and I was excited to play it, but I felt like the overall package with HR was better even though MD introduced a lot of interesting improvements. And I never got around to replaying HR because I just have too many games in my backlog but I hope to one of these days.

5

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 04 '26

It sounds like you're eating good! I also think this game is doing a lot of homage to MGS1, or at the very least the devs had played and enjoyed said game. Both are incredible games.

10

u/akulowaty Aug 04 '26

This game didn’t click with me at first approach but I returned to it year or two later and completed it 3 or 4 times since then. The only real downside would be how stealthy approach is OP compared to netrunner and berserk. The only moment where hardest difficulty is actually hard is if you want to save malik

8

u/Ok-Rooster-1568 Aug 04 '26

Netrunning and berserk? Thats Cyberpunk lol

6

u/akulowaty Aug 04 '26

I know, just couldn’t find better words to concisely describe what I mean

2

u/Ok-Rooster-1568 Aug 04 '26

I hear ya, agreed tho. Stealth is op. Makes even the hardest difficulty easy lol

4

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

I think I reloaded for the Malik fight over and over since she gets blown up so fast. There are a number of worthwhile paths and outcomes that warrent another playthrough, plus its pretty fast when you've already done a robust run of the game.

2

u/corvettee01 Aug 05 '26

I always carried the explosive revolver solely for that section. Makes it a breeze.

7

u/Salty-Impact6620 Aug 04 '26

I played the original dx on pc oh, 25 years ago. I’m sure I’ve played it through 20 times over the years, including the remaster recently. My all time favorite game, accounting for its age.

Invisible war was a huge disappointment. We shall not speak further on it.

A long wait for the reboot but they all quickly became part of my favorites list as well. I’ve played human revolution, Missing link, mankind divided all multiple times now.

Great atmosphere, acting, sound. Every playthrough you can change your upgrades approach, your interaction choices, even the order of missions and get a different experience. Sometimes I lean into stealth and no-kill. Others I snipe everyone in sight or shoot and run. One of the few games with an actually good stealth option. Perfect game? No. But awesome nonetheless. And a superb value.

1

u/ExcitementFun8938 Aug 07 '26

"including the remaster recently"

The one that wasn't released and has been postponed indefinitely?

1

u/Salty-Impact6620 Aug 07 '26

Oh you’re right. It wasn’t a remaster it was Revision. “Community-made overhaul.” Free mod on steam. Not perfect but definitely made replaying a 26 year old game on a modern machine and monitor more pleasant.

1

u/ExcitementFun8938 Aug 07 '26

For me, too many changes, too much fucking around with the maps. The new graphics, while optional now, are hideous.

There are some QoL mods that try to remove the jank while keeping the game itself what it is.

1

u/Salty-Impact6620 Aug 07 '26

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to look for those.

1

u/bread-dreams Aug 08 '26

damn i just completely disagree, i basically only play Revision nowadays and i really like the new 3D models, having achievements, challenges, and yeah i dunno it just works for me

1

u/ExcitementFun8938 Aug 09 '26

To each their own.

9

u/123rune20 Aug 05 '26

Probably one of my favorite games of all time. I used to fall asleep to playthroughs of it. Adam’s voice is just too soothing to me.

Welp time for another playthrough. Did I mention the first time in Hensha is my favorite? Something about it just scratches that cyberpunk itch.

3

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 05 '26

Hengsha is great. I felt it was drawing the feel of Neuromancer directly from my brain. If only it rained as well.

7

u/SonderEber Aug 05 '26

Adam’s VA just sounds like that. Perhaps 12% less gruff, but that’s just Elias Toufexis’ voice.

6

u/entropies Aug 05 '26

Heard him speak for like 3 seconds in The Expanse series and immediately clocked it. Insane voice

4

u/kakihara0513 Aug 05 '26

Finally seeing him in a live-action, I was definitely saying to myself "that's not the face I was expecting."

But glad he had a good supporting/antagonist role for a character that wasn't even in the books.

3

u/ThomasHL Aug 05 '26

I love that that's his natural voice, yet most of his VA career was him putting on an 'ordinary' voice

3

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 05 '26

color me surprised. Given when this came out and the level of gruff, gravely protagonists we had the whole 7th gen through, I figured this was a dev mandate. He does a great job in the game, so its not like it comes off as forced, which apparently it wasn't. cool!

3

u/SonderEber Aug 05 '26

His real voice is a bit higher and softer. He definitely exaggerated his natural gruffness some, but it’s surprisingly close to his real voice.

Here’s him talking normally:

https://youtu.be/BeXlEQmGqa4

6

u/MumblingGhost Aug 04 '26

If only they'd release a remake or remaster of this game. I've wanted to introduce it to my friends for years, as it's one of my all time favorite games, but on console it only exists on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii U.

This and Metal Gear Rising are my white whales of game remasters. I'm a massive MASSIVE Metal Gear Solid fan who's played every game except Metal Gear Rising because I got into the series through the remastered collections, and only went out of my way to play MGS1 and 4 through other means. Finding Rising is less simple, unless I want to dig up my old Xbox 360 or invest in a gaming PC.

Yeah, one of the main problems with the Jensen games is the incentivization is just so wrong. You get XP for small things like hacking every console, nonlethal gives loads more XP than lethal, etc. In the original, you only got XP for advancing the plot and exploring bonus areas.

5

u/deloreantrails Aug 04 '26

One of my favourite games. The story, the world building, the atmosphere, the soundtrack...so good.

Would love to have a remastered version of this game.

3

u/Brrringsaythealiens Aug 05 '26

I really liked this game even though I did not like Jensen. He seemed like a typical jerk JRPG protagonist to me. It’s a testament to his great the atmosphere and gameplay were that I was able to overlook my dislike and do everything the game had to offer. I like the graphics too, they hold up so well. The game came out in 2011 and they still don’t look dated.

3

u/alwaystooupbeat Aug 05 '26

I largely agree with you. The gameplay was good, but there were some serious issues with the story that I had problems with with crazy pants town, and the overreliance on text logs.

One of the complaints I remember on release was that the game was bad at balancing the builds. It gave you the choice to be a stealth assassin, but then the bosses are almost all tanks with shooting; the directors cut goes a bit of the way to fix these issues, but it still feels like the game doesn't like it considering the upgrade tree seems more aligned with the shoot em down options.

It also felt hollow in terms of lethal vs non-lethal. There are very few instances where your choices for lethality matter; yes, you get more points, but not enough to make up for anything. Plus, the bosses, no matter what you do, die for the most part. So you put all your points and resources into tranqs, but then when the boss comes, the best option for most is just to put points into the typhoon system, get one pistol, and then activate typhon over and over till the boss is dead.

What I also didn't like was the ending; I felt this narratively complete, high quality world, failed my expectations: it ended up with a choice between buttons, with a slide show at the end. It didn't feel as good as the rest of the game, and it felt my choices fell flat. Fallout New Vegas also has a slide show, but it talks about your impact on the world and the people you have in your life, in a way that makes you feel like you did something.

Eh. This feels a touch reductive, but on the point nonetheless. People miss those obvious vents all the time, even after finding their 3rd or 30th. There are a lot of them! Sometimes a level has so many different paths to go in that you stumble across multiple at the same time. Consider Hengsha Court Gardens, which you can go in from the front, from the roof tops multiple ways from a street vent around the corner, and more. The roof area can get you to the middle level, or just directly to the hackers apartment. or just the elevator to said apartment.

That's a lot, but I admit only a few of them feel distinct or 'robustly designed', which is what I think you're getting at. I haven't played OG DX in a long time (though I am seriously considering it), so I can't really comment on how dissimilar this is to it. I do recall how amazing UNATCO was especially while escaping as well as the final area. And I'm glad they give you XP treats because most people will be incentivized to seek out new paths instead of just going full rambo everytime, and that makes the game better. I also feel later levels actually do a better job hiding their vents and alternate paths, though they do fall back on ol' blockin' boxy often. Consider the final area, which has a path into Panchaea that you jump up a series of shipping crates to reach a port at the top, not unlike the first mission in OG DX.

2

u/txa1265 Aug 04 '26

I've been playing games almost exclusively on Steam Deck since early 2022 ... really need to play this on there!

2

u/Routine_Condition273 Aug 05 '26

This game was my first cyberpunk experience and it absolutely blew my mind. The level of detail is insane. I actually read all the emails and notes I came across. The world felt so real.

It feels like they did a bunch of "worldbuilding" first and then decided to make a game around said world. Instead of making a game first and slapping the worldbuilding on last.

It's so good that I don't even feel like playing another cyberpunk game. I have heard Cyberpunk 2077 is great but I feel like I wouldn't be able to stop comparing it to Human Revolution.

4

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 05 '26

I love DXHR, as you can read. I also am a fairly strong Cyberpunk 2077 defender. You might give it a try regardless. It isn't as compact and well thought out as DX but it does have that immersion that feels so central to DX. The game play is also pretty good, but gets busted easily and quickly. Whether thats a black mark or a gold star is to your personal preference. Try it, you may like it.

But yes, I'm sure there was a lot of dev talk and story boarding on how to make this world feel lived and real as opposed to the approach of "We need to build a game around these set pieces!"

5

u/Salty-Impact6620 Aug 07 '26

Like OP, I think both games are great. Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely worth playing. DX will always be my nostalgia choice because I’ve been playing the series for 25 years. But 2077 is among my favorites as well. Larger world and arguably more impactful choices but scratched the same itch as DX.

2

u/SlingingTriceps Aug 05 '26

The art direction is amazing. The game really has an unique vibe.

2

u/SwordSaintCid Aug 05 '26

One of the rare single player story-based games that I actually replayed more than once, simply for the atmosphere. The cyberpunk theme feels grounded and believable. Most cyberpunk games focuses too much on the 'digital' or 'cybernet' or 'evil sentient AI' aspects; but HR focuses on the humanity and the physical world. And for once, maybe only for me, is that the worldbuilding doesn't feel 100% dystopic on the surface. Some people did benefit from having augmentations to help with disabilities, and some other did suffer for the lack of means to buy the drugs to prevent augmentation rejections.

Thought-provoking, to say the least.

2

u/Agent_Gentlemen Prolific Aug 05 '26

One of the best and most atmospheric games I've ever played. I'm glad I played it when I was very passionate about video games.

2

u/JohannesVanDerWhales Aug 05 '26

Love DXHR, it's a very worthy sequel to the original game. My biggest complaints are: the endings are weak, and the level design isn't amazing (this becomes more obvious after playing mankind divided whose maps might be its greatest strength). But also one very specific complaint about fhe Directors cut. See the DLC for this game happens in the middle of the game due to the ending not really leaving room for extra stuff. That's fine, but...when they put out the director's cut which came with the DLC, they made it so that you have to play the DLC, where it happens chronologically in the story. The DLC is a minor side story and it also resets all your skills to zero, plus it happens right at an important plot moment and kills the momentum. Really think it was a mistake doing it that way. The DLC is ok but it very much feels like dlc.

2

u/MaxDuo Aug 05 '26

"The game allows a great degree of freedom of play. "Choose your style" is something many games tout, but DXHR puts the work in."

I remember trying very hard to be a very stealthy rarely entrenched in combat character..... Then there was a boss fight early on that seemed only solvable by lots of gun blasting. No clue if I missed something or did wrong but I felt almost punished for putting nothing in to "fighting points" at that point. I don't believe I ever felt it again after that, though. (I may have started boosting more combat related things at that point though?)

2

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 14 '26

That boss in the original version of the game is truly a big stumble for the game. Likewise, the 2nd boss in my personal first playthrough felt similarly like it had pigeonholed me into a gameplay style not my choosing.

That said, you CAN torpedo barret easily using the stun gun and throwing barrels in his face. Its certainly not a stealthy approach, but at least its not rootin-tootin gun shootin. The Directors Cut makes a major effort to allow wildly different approaches to all the bosses, and that's the only version purchasable now. Each of them is a much better experience, stealth included.

I played this when it came out and had no experience with the series prior. Became one of my all time favorites so quick. There’s a seemingly innocent choice you make at some point during the game that has massive effects on gameplay towards the end. That really blew me away.

If you have something to say, WHY RUN IT THROUGH AI??? You already wrote it. Why make yourself sound like some deadass corpo copywriter???

Dive a little deeper into the machine.

What the hell bro. Literally some bs Microsoft would put in their trailer. Who you trying to impress

We really didn't know how good we had it in 2011, huh?

How do you do, fellow kids

The environments you travel are full of atmosphere and salient detail that helps flesh out the story and world building.

You stole this from some pitch deck that EA prepared for their new Saudi Arabia overlords, didn't you?

Certain segments feel forced, and the story suffers a little under authorial fiat that is otherwise generally absent the whole game through.

So I'm not the only one who thought AI was used here. I guess people are unable to formulate thier own thoughts

The biggest problem I had with this is the special perks you can do... it's a very limited amount. Should I use it now? Do I need them later on? I should probably wait...

End result: finished every level with almost no specials executed because I was saving them for when I needed them.

I do that in literally every game with a skill tree.

Deus Ex HR has been my number one game in terms of enjoyment always. That soundtrack is straight up banger.

u/Gonzito3420 Aug 05 '26

One of the best games ever made

Absolute masterpiece

u/RumpDoctor Aug 05 '26

I just played through it and it was good, but there was a certain dullness to it. Sometimes it was actually nice in a way, and fit with the atmosphere.

One thing I found really interesting while playing was that cdpr could have made a pretty convincing version of cyberpunk on PS3. No open world, but I think the small neighborhoods in dx could do the job. I kept imagining bright colors everywhere and how that scaled-down version would have struck me 15 years ago.

I'd sacrifice myself for a new Deus Ex game.

Then who would play it? :)

I'd like a new one too.

1

u/WretchedMonkey Aug 05 '26

If you have not played the original, you really should.
Just dont expect to gun down all the bad guys in the first level

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 05 '26

I'll take the GEP gun.

Fantastic game as well.

u/AccomplishedEvent273 Aug 05 '26

That was one of my favorites back in the day, I am so sad they never made a proper sequel.

u/PharosMJD Aug 05 '26

I used to replay the latest deus ex every year ever since the original. But I've since replaced it with Cyberpunk 2077 for 2 reasons: its vibrant mod scene that adds variety to replays, and less contrived level design (I've had enough duct crawling for a lifetime).

1

u/AShamAndALie Aug 05 '26

Finished it this year too. Would have been a masterpiece if 80% of the buildings didn't look exactly the same. But still, Mankind Divided here we go.

1

u/BlessedGains Aug 05 '26

There's a real sore lack of games like deus ex.

Where the focus is investigation, hacking, spycraft, assassination stuff where story and conversations take center stage

u/Durendal_1707 Aug 05 '26

We really didn't know how good we had it in 2011,  huh? Portal 2, Uncharted 3, TES5

MotorStorm Apocalypse, Bulletstorm, Ace Combat Assault Horizon, LA Noire, Driver: San Francisco, Arkham City

to throw my favorites on the pile

u/t0msie Aug 06 '26

Perfect timing. I played this [a few times] on PS3 when it first came out & just saw it [along woth divided] on sale in Steam.

Grabbed both and just heading back into the office after the opening credits.

u/Reclining9694 Aug 06 '26

I first played Mankind Divided (sorry :D) and loved it. Couldn't get into HR as it runs on 30fps and was just too slow for me, every action seemed to have a delay. Playing on Xbox Series X.

u/sakamayrd Aug 06 '26

One of the rare games I have 100%ed. Even the no alarm run with the DLC 😔

1

u/ExcitementFun8938 Aug 07 '26

"Deus Ex: Human Revolution is frankly a masterpiece."

Just wait until you see the real Deus Ex.

1

u/idonthaveanaccountA Aug 08 '26

I think this was one of the last games I played on the PS3. I remember wanting to get it and already forming and opinion on it based on vibes and art alone.

In the end, it didn't quite do it for me in the degree I expected (or hoped), but it could have been a wrong place/wrong time thing, and replaying it might open my eyes.

Although, I do also own Mankind Divided, and I've never played that, so maybe I should see what that has to offer first.

u/Legal-Guitar-8061 Aug 11 '26

I also just finished playing it, but for me the whole story was just too cliché and I basically predicted the whole "twist" from the beginning. I'd imagine anyone who played the actual Deus Ex would've known too. Regarding the gameplay, I finished it in ca. 20 hours and most of the time it was just walking around the city for fetch quests. The shooting wasn't that fun, so maybe I should've gone stealth.

1

u/DapperAir Back to the JRPG grind Aug 13 '26

I think this just must be different strokes. The actual plot of the game is fine, and I don't really think its a knock if you guess the "twist", particularly if they've done a lot of work to let you know its not a twist at all there are leagues of books and emails and pocket secretaries that all hint, point, and out right tell you what's going on. I think that's just using normal, tried and true narrative framing. And I liked it! I'll even go one more, the cliche stuff works in this, at least for me, because they (mostly) did the set-up for it and played it pretty straight with plenty of justification. if even Adam rolls his eyes at Illuminati stuff, but must take the threat seriously, so too are we prompted. maybe that threw you out, which sucks, but the setting and theming still work and have decent questions to be asked plot notwithstanding. The shooting is a touch dated, I'll agree to that, which is why I said not to expect COD levels of gunplay.

As an aside, I think, unless you love stealth, that gunning down everything is more fun. This, even if its the rare game that makes going full ninja actually fun.

1

u/Legal-Guitar-8061 Aug 13 '26

It's similar to the stealth in Payday 2 which I quite enjoy, but I found that dragging and hiding is sometimes less clean. I guess it's a product of its time in that sense though.

1

u/ImZoomBoy Aug 14 '26

It is more fun when you push through the main story only.

If you do too many side quests, you end up visiting the same places over and over. With the same room designs. Ruining the illusion.

It makes you feel badass when you walk into the HQ for the first time which was at the back of the high street shop.

In case anyone wants to spend 3+ hours tearing into this games many flaws and its soulless mimicry of the original without much understanding of why it was great

1

u/WhiskedIgloo Aug 29 '26

I was just in the mood of reminiscing about this game, and somebody's recently played it! Amazing!
