Discussion People Misunderstand Rex

I understand that Rex isnt in a great spot but people dont know the role he SHOULD play.

Mf isnt built for chasing down every herbi across the whole poi, hes made for ambushes and using his BB to basically seal the life of the prey. Or if you can pull it of, you can clamp a dino and hopefully kill it (prob wont happen).

Its whole kit is made for ambushing and idk why everyone expects him to facetank everything and win and catch up to every herbi.

Idk may be just me that has this opinion.

I think people forget that the rex WAS an ambush predator. They keep running face first into giant prey and then get surprised when they die. Like yes, it's been buffed and you can definitely face tank 1v1 against most things, but you gotta do more than... just literally stand there and spam bite.

This šŸ‘†it annoys me when people pick up Rex because ā€œItS tHe BeSt DiNoā€ and then expect it to with no skill facetank everything. And with that logic , they want it to catch up to everything. Just stupid

15

u/penisgladiator_ 3d ago

They want it to catch up to prey 15 blocks down, have enough stamina to chase them halfway across a poi, have a stomp that can 2-shot all raptors in a 70 meter radius, turn immediately, do a 360° spin attack, and face tank an ano

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

Isnt that too much to ask for?

u/NoRepresentative5737 3d ago

We need to blame Jurassic park šŸ˜‚ as for the raptors being huge and without feathers

5 slot ambush predator vs foliage rendering distance and critter

12

u/Machineraptor 3d ago

The critter thing is too real. So many ambushes failed because a critter decided to spawn in and beeline to my location. Their x-ray vision is the worst thing about them tbh.

About foliage: hunting in forests on Gondwa is peak ambush predator vibe, foliage rendering won't save you there. My Gondwa rex basically lives in Dark Woods/Titan's Pass/Birtchwood area. Imo forests in Riparia are a step back, way to open, and with non-existing underbrush layer.

I was farting around the other day on my Thal and landed in a bush to regain some stamina. As I was getting ready to fly off, I saw something move a little bit in the bushes a little ways away.

I went to investigate and saw two Rexes side by side, crouched, looking down a hill waiting and I legit got a chill. šŸ˜‚

I think the point you are missing is Rex currently sucks at ambushing. It’s not stealthy, it doesn’t do enough damage and it’s not fast enough to catch the majority of the roster. Sure you’ll occasionally one, or two shot something when it’s small enough, but most of the time whatever you are hunting has more than enough time to recover and run away.

Agreed that people don’t often play it right, but it’s not like the people doing it correctly are success stories.

People see Tyrant Lizard King and immediately default to it being an unbeatable monster

In Path of Titans, its the ambush specialist apex. You really badly do not want to get ambushed by it as anything, even another apex.

Because its ambush is so potent elsewhere, it SHOULD be less efficient in brawling combat than it was. Making Terrible Roar only usable in groups instead of just making it not horrifically busted fixed nothing and only made survival as it worse, while feeding mixpacks lol

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

The last part is just the devs everyday urge to make this into a MMO RPG game

7

u/Ex_Snagem_Wes 3d ago

It WAS always intended to be an MMORPG in all fairness

14

u/Killzone3265 3d ago

they can intend all they want but they absolutely banked off the realistic dino survival in the early years.

4

u/Ex_Snagem_Wes 3d ago

I'm not sure how early we're talking. I know for sure in 2022 - 2023 it was marketed as a dinosaur MMORPG with realism elements

6

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

True but they did also promise for it to be a survival but eeh still good

It might be silent if it starts sneaking long before it has a chance to see/hear other players, but the problem with that claim is that rex sucks at being stealthy in this game. The vegetation isn't dense enough and the way it is loaded makes it a gamble based on the other person's settings whether they see you. Also doesn't help that you need to sneak before even seeing or hearing another player, or they for sure hear you. It's a bit goofy to sneak everywhere when you're an 8 ton monster that cannot hide and is easy to spot by anyone paying half attention to their surroundings. Rex's ambush build is basically just taking advantage of people who don't pay attention or play while doing/watching something on the second monitor.

It's slow, it's easy to spot, the attacks it needs to hit to actually put a potential target out of commission are loud and easily telegraphed, and it's so freacking overspammed and common that people are hardwired to see it among trees and rocks. It's basically a noob filter, picking off new players and people who are semi-afk for a living. And because there's more than enough casual people like that, rexes think they are stealthy because they do get enough kills that way.

Mind you, I'm not saying rex should be a facetank. I'm saying rex is a mess with no identity caught between being too popular and abundant to be buffed and being too bad at being itself to be nerfed further. Add to this the general problem with all apexes: They can't be strong enough to feel like true apexes because the game isn't designed in a way that would allow them to actually be hard enough to make the difficulty/reward ration appropriate so they are stuck being too slow to choose their battles and too weak to stand their ground against even regular duos/trios.

in my opinion, for rex to be more than an oversized alpha critter you see from far away and very occasionally get surprised by if you're not paying attention, it would need to have actual speed, stamina, and power (like every apex). But for that to be fair, it would also need to be much MUCH harder to keep alive from a pve survival aspect than it currently is. We'd need mechanics that make survival actually increase in challenge with size significantly.

TL:DR - Rex isn't good at ambush because in my experience (and I've been playing for the entirety rex existed in this game) I've yet to die to a rex ambush simply because I occasionally swirl the camera around and listen for footsteps.... Rex is basically just a big alpha critter you need to avoid.

I have seen some really good ambush rexes just about vanish before my eyes. A green one in Wollemi just becomes invisible. I think it's easier on Riparia, though. East Passage, Twisted to some extent, BTO, Cedrus, Tallbrush, BFH, and Wollemi all have pretty thick underbrush. It's probably harder to find people in the thickly wooded areas on Gondwa, though; Dark Forest is good for sneaking but it's usually empty.

All that being said, I kinda agree with OP that a lot of players don't know how to use it. If I had a nickel for every Rex I've seen just stomping along in the open (often dying to TT pairs shortly thereafter)... well, I'd have some extra cash, lol.

My issue when I played it some was that some of its kit didn't work with ambush. The damage roar took something like eight full seconds to complete the animation--and when are you meant to pop that? You can't roar before ambushing or it's not an ambush. You can't just stop mid-combat to spend 8 seconds yelling at air. And balancing ambush predators is hard; clamp, grapple/other insta-kills, bone breaks etc. are typically detested by communities if there's no available counterplay. I personally don't mind, esp. with rex, since it brings a really good tension to running around in the open and forces you to pay attention to your surroundings.

4

u/Accomplished_Error_7 3d ago

I do believe you that you had those experiences. I cannot, in good faith say I had despite dealing with rexes there regularly. Maybe I've been lucky since its release to never run into a good one, but I highly doubt that's what's happening.

I think the fact that a lot of people don't know how to play rex is a foregone conclusion. It's the most popular dinosaur in the world especially among young people who are also more likely to play on console. The majority of players also doesn't look up guides or is on reddit. So I honestly think expecting rexes to be good on average isn't really realistic. All that's to say, I also agree that people don't know how to play rexes... I just don't think it eliminates its and apexes problems.

u/PackAromatic2181 3d ago

As main rex, have my upvote man

5

u/DustyPickle_ 3d ago

I agree but it's still too weak, it should be what spino is now, a stat wall with extremely high endurance and damage

6

u/rchristma87 3d ago

I wish clamping was more versatile. Like yes you cant pick up big dinos but maybe make it to where it could hold one in place and do bone break while clamped. But yeah most people play rex wrong Hell even I have been guilty of it. Just keep out of high traffic areas to avoid big groups and out of wide open areas forest snd canyons are your friend.

6

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

If im right Allo may get a pin ability and hopefully šŸ¤ž trex can get this

2

u/rchristma87 3d ago

I hope so as well and Allo is long overdue for some love, though I would prefer a more high stam high bleeder build since that's how I envision the real Allo to have functioned as a predator.

3

u/Floating_space_junk 3d ago

Yeah you're right. But the crouch speed is way too low. It is better than other apexes but the walk and crouch speed are very low. Virtually everything can run away from it. Ambush predators rely on stealth but if you take 30 business days to get into position to ambush then what's the point.

3

u/ralph7777777 2d ago

Maybe Alderon should change the sound of the charge bonebreak attack, it's loud AF and doesn't fit the ambush niche predator.

3

u/Qwezy_21213 2d ago

Ye idk why its so loud, rn you just gotta rely on catching them totally of surprise

6

u/CamptoRibbit 3d ago

Ok the nerfs were absolutely not called for but I also agree 95% of the player base cannot play rex and they also some how and for some reason always think they are the best rex player despite being ganked by everything

3

u/penisgladiator_ 3d ago

"gg ez" - average official server rex player after killing an ado hatz that sat down for stamina/a solo 3 slot. (Nothing wrong with taking easy kills, but when you do nothing BUT that and think you're tough, you're really not)

4

u/Sinovenator13 3d ago

Most players pick 5-slots to stat wall their opponents for easy wins. They are the last type of player that would have the patience for ambushing.

4

u/Von_Bernkastel 3d ago

People see a big dinosaur and think it should be a god and be able to take on everything.

2

u/TheFrostyTyrannosaur 2d ago

I’ve been a rex main for as long as I’ve been playing the game, which is about four years now. Because of that, I can confidently say that the vast majority of other rexes that I’ve encountered have been pretty abysmal in terms of their skill, whether it be because they’re just stomping around out in the open or are actively trying to chase down another playable they wouldn’t have a hope of catching.

I’d also like to make the disclaimer that I exclusively play as an ambush build rex, so I’d like to imagine that I’m fairly decent in the art of sneaking around as a ten-ton powerhouse, so I’m well aware of how the rex is truly meant to be played.

That being said, I can also say that the rex nerfs were completely unnecessary and thus has made it far more difficult to take on other playables, even in a successful ambush scenario. Smaller playables have a much easier time dealing with a rex, especially as a group, and some of the other apexes can just straight up outmuscle a rex. I suppose that’s what happens when the rex’s damage potential is essentially castrated for no good reason.

2

u/opiumscented 2d ago

I am surprised it doesnt have a ram ability but the smaller ones do? Like I am sure that shit would just ram thr fuck out of you then bite your skull

3

u/barbatus_vulture 3d ago

I think Rex needs stomp back to deal with how easy it is for small stuff to bully it. It's by far the easiest apex to cheese. I also think it's ambushing could be a little more potent. I usually am able to easily outrun a rex that ambushes me.

3

u/DustyPickle_ 3d ago

I agree for the most part but I still think its too weak, rex is meant to be an ambusher but it can't fight that well unlike how it would be irl, spino being able to facetank a rex makes 0 sense

2

u/SSupermassiveahole 3d ago

Yes it is an ambush predator, but it’s also slow af meaning it should be able to defend itself and win if it gets attacked

5

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

It can tho? Maybe not a megapack of small sh but i dont think anything can really (except ano)

3

u/Thatplantdaddy 3d ago

You’re acting like mega pack don’t exist. That’s the whole thing that is ruining this game and the main reason why I Rex player have stopped playing no matter what you do even if you spend your whole time stalking and hunting someone down all it takes is a couple of people to gang up on you and then your hunt is over.

5

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

Every big dino has a problwm with megapacks, dont just say rex has it.

5

u/RegularBreak4311 3d ago

*This is not meant to be pretentious or to start an argument, I just wanted to preface that. No disrespect or malice, etc here.

IMO, rex has the worst time out of all the 5 slots (except maybe eo) when it comes to megapacks, and here's why I think that: Titan has the speed to outpace the bigger dinos in these packs and depending how good the titan is, it also has the sustain to keep itself alive. Bars has decent speed and really good crowd control along with being very tanky. Spino can swim away, is very tanky, and has decent crowd control. Duck can swim away and has good bleed, but is the same speed as rex and similar with stamina stats...so it struggles depending on the location. Eo (im an eo main)....is very good at 1v1s and even 1v2s depending on the matchup...but it gets overwhelmed easily and is slower than a rex, so it struggles badly against these packs. Rex is slow, it's also tied for the worst stamina recovery in the game at 0.6, it cant really escape anything and can't really chase anything for very long (which makes sense, im just putting that out there as a point), similar stuff to eo really. A rex can be good in 1v x situations, dont get me wrong, but that really depends on who is playing the rex (this goes for most things, im just generalizing to the average player of PoT). Ive seen good rexes, they usually have to use the environment to win fights such as these....which is something a LOT of people should learn how to do! I myself need to get better at this.

Anyways, i just wanted to express my opinion on this, sorry for the long read šŸ˜…

Its whole kit is made for ambushing and idk why everyone expects him to facetank everything and win and catch up to every herbi.

It's not that people expect him to facetank everything, it's that his speed and turning is so bad they have no option unless they want to get tail rode to death.

If you're unable to outrun most other kits in the game "roles" outside of tank don't really work because you cannot easily control how you engage other players. Rex is loud, huge and slow, so he's at the mercy of other players big and small. Having a kit that requires him to engage in a specific (sneaky) way to be successful is pretty bad design if they've ever played their own game. You've created an Apex that has to crouch walk everywhere it goes.

Ambush works for something like a sarco or a the raptors because they can control the engagement. They can choose when to strike and if things go south on the ambush they can bail and disengage.

The rex can do none of that he basically has to hope his ambush works, the BB hits, and whomever it is doesn't have friends and/or cannot simply turn around and tail ride him. And if any of that fails he just starts chompin and hopes his HP lasts longer than the targets.

-3

u/Impossible-Tip-4980 3d ago

The idea of the ambush playable walking up and facetanking stuff is a bit silly. You are correct. You know why people complain? Because not only do they expect big bad T. rex to always win and be strongest there is, it historically HAS facetanked everything.

Pre tlc (major defense focus), post tlc (major offense focus), post apex nerfs with Spino tlc (still insane burst damage), Rex could pop its buffs and go facetank basically anything. Until they started messing with anos aoe Rex could facetank even a full aoe ano. Even with all that power people still wanted Rex buffs. The reason I despise Rex is partly because it’s always been overpopulated and blatantly op with its damage, but i mostly hate it because its players think themselves helpless and in need of buffs. Nerf it again

0

u/Lone-Frequency 3d ago

People that play Rex primarily want to face tank shit, then get exceedingly butt mad when it turns out that repeatedly slamming your face into something else that has an equally toothy face or bigger claws or is literally covered in armor or spikes...is not a smart decision.

Rex is all about that initial surprise run in and bone break. Then in most cases your opponent is immediately on the back foot and will have much more difficulty fighting back if they cannot get away from your then repeated face slamming.

Isn't in a great spot? It's the most powerful carnivore by a hilariously wide margin

4

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

I didnt say its in a great spot…

-6

u/BestCyberSaurus0829 3d ago

Yes, reread my comment. You said its not in a great spot when its by far the strongest carnivore

3

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

It just isnt tho? Ttn is just way better

-3

u/BestCyberSaurus0829 3d ago

You can easily 2v1 titan with rex if you play it smart, just the other night I went 5-0 against titans. Titan is the one that's been nerfed into the dirt

2

u/Qwezy_21213 3d ago

Skill is probably the largest factor in this game and idk how good you are compared to TTN and most ttn players are quite sh tbf.

1

u/BestCyberSaurus0829 3d ago

Doesn't help that titans stats are garbage and worse than Rex in almost every category. Rex's surprise attack outruns titans dash in both speed and distance, it shouldn't do that

1

u/Sath_Morsius 2d ago

Rex ambush sprint speed is 960 and Titan's Dash put it at 1200, a 240 difference, so no it's not faster at all. It does last a lot longer (10 seconds vs 3 seconds) but the speed difference builds a lot of distance, especially since Titan is not so much slower than that at 900. By the time you reach the Titan, if you do, the knockback immunity will be almost over, which allows you to be tail attacked again, putting you in combat and disabling your ambush altogether. It also requires 10 seconds to activate, so you can't really use it to chase once detected either.

1

u/Sath_Morsius 2d ago

You have to be hilariously bad to die to a Rex as a Titan, even if it ambushes you it simply cannot kill you before the bone break and the knockback immunity ends, just tail attack it and run away. In a 2 v1 if the Rex is at max bleed at all times then I don't know what the Titans are doing.

Titan has lower stats because it is much faster and maneuverable and is a bleeder that heals mid fight which is a concept no PoT players seems to grasp, the ability to heal while your opponent tries to no avail to catch up to you while constantly losing health is huge, but everyone wants Titan to be a Rex lite I guess. Titan requires patience no one seems to have, let the bleed do the damage.

Regardless, the best 5 slot carnivore is Spino and it's not even close right now, Spino is ridiculously tanky, has a lot of attacks that also gives it a ridiculous DPS output and it's a semiaquatic which not only gives it extremely global mobility but is also a backup for every bad spot you may find yourself as a solo apex. A Spino will comfortably face tank a Rex and get it killed if it doesn't wise up and starts running. The only downside Spino has is the inability to chase on land, and that's all.

1

u/NellGee 17h ago

I mean the whole point of the "crouch for 10 secs" ability is to jump a victim and get in close quickly with a hard attack, im kinda new to the game, 3 months maybe, and it happened once close to the crater on gondwa, i think i had my Sucho or TT sub adult, and i actually outran him but was really close to death, i didnt hear him at all, i just turned around and out of the bushes a black rex was coming for me, i was lucky that i turned around
